Joe Wilson Releases Combative Fundraising Video

Updated 10:34 p.m.
By Garance Franke-Ruta
Declaring "I will not be muzzled," a combative Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) issued a fundraising appeal Thursday night asking supporters to donate to his re-election campaign after watching his opponent effortlessly raise more than half a million dollars since Wilson's outburst against President Obama.

"I want to take this moment to speak to you directly," Wilson said in the video, in which he acknowledged that his interruption of the presidential address to Congress was "wrong" and reminded viewers that he "apologized to the president shortly afterwards."

But the outburst "occurred after a month of town hall meetings and deeply emotional conversations I had with constituents who are as passionate as I am about this issue," he said.

"On these issue I will not be muzzled. I will speak up and speak loudly against this risky plan," he said.

"The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan," he said, continuing to suggest that the bills under discussion contain provisions to aid illegal immigrants that fact-checking groups say are not there.

"They want to silence anyone who speaks out against it. They made it clear they want to defeat me and pass the plan. I need your help now," he said.

Even worse than his outburst, is Rep. Wilson's blind repetition of the Republican lies about health care reform.

The lies about "government takeover". The lies about illegal immigrants.

Republicans lie.

I wish I could make a half a million that easy. His opponent now loves him. He's probably arranging for him to make some more speeches. Has no one talked to this guy yet about his facts? What a wonderful boon for America's image of Republicans

According to Joe Wilson, real Americans will only be able to get treatment from illegal alien Mexican doctors and they will have to go through death panels made up of African-American orderlies before getting seen.

This has a familiar feel . . . ah yes! It the Palin redux! Palin called her time as Wasilla's mayor as "being a community organizer with real responsibilities . . . " during the presidential campaign. Within 24 hours, Obama/Biden got another $10M. Keep talking GOP!

"The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan,"

There is no "government takeover". I challenge Wilson to show where in any of the plans there is such a thing.

The plan Obama was talking about specifically states, in two places I believe, that illegals may not be covered under the plan.

So the guy who shouts, wrongly, about a lie which was not a lie is himself not being truthful. But what I think has stung him more was the half-million unsolicited dollars in one day raised by his opponent, from over 10,000 people during a recession. That ought to send a clear message that the majority of Americans do not agree with the republicans. And it should come as no surprise to anyone that money is what got their attention. And it must have hurt considering Wilson's pandering above. Let's see who in the GOP will be next be rude and obnoxious and risk money going to their opponents.

Say it isn't so, Joe!

Over his entire congressional career, health professionals represent Wilson’s top industry contributors, donating a total of $244,196 to his campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics OpenSecrets.org database. He received another $86,150 from pharmaceutical companies, $73,050 from insurance companies and $68,000 from hospitals and nursing homes.

I think this man needs to be banned from congress and from ever serving as part of any American process. I am outraged at the disrespect this low class person displayed for the highest office in our nation. Obama is the elected President of the USA and we the people voted him in to office. This man's actions are nothing short of domestic terrorism. I am ashamed of his bad behavior and I hope the American people demand that he be banned from congress. He is not a role model for young Americans and especially my grand children. Kick that clown outta town!

OMG, I just watched the pandering video above. Guess he never took a public speaking class. Question is, who wrote it for him since he doesn't seem to know it very well. He reads it like a 3rd grader standing in front of the class with a new book. I wonder if he even understands what he's talking about, like "government run health care".

I also noticed how he threw in "I choose life", in a different context from its anti-abortion meaning, but it seemed out of place in the context and so was probably code to his base. So sad that the once great republican party has reduced itself to being the Christian Theocracy Party, destined for third party status.

Either Obama is a deparate politician or a liar. Now he's claiming his spendulous bill saved or created 1 million jobs. I wish he'd tell America HOW he measures saved jobs. Also, HOW many saved and How many created?

I think Joe Wilson is correct. He's a liar. There is NOTHING in place that can measure 'saved" jobs and the last report on jobs showed a lost of 1/4 Million.

He lied about not having lobbyist in his cabinet.

He lied about reading bills "line by line" before signing them.

He lied about posting bills for public review before signing them.

He lied about not allowing earmarks in bills (8000 in the spendulous bill)

He lied about the urgency to pass the stimulous (aka spendulous) bill or unemployment will hit 8%. It's now 9.7% WITH the spendulous bill.

He lied about the impact the spenduolous bill and said it would create 4 million new jobs.

He lied last night when he said there would be no healthcare rationing. How can you add 40 million new people to a system with limite Docs and Nurses and NOT create a bottle neck for caregivers?

He lied about not cutting Medicare when in HR3200 it clearly states that Medicare will be cut by $500 Billion.

Joe Wilson was correct in saying "LIAR!"

In classic Republican fashion there are no ideas..no there, there. If you visit Mr. Wilson's website it says it can't handle the traffic but he does have the capacity to say he is sorry but not really sorry because (in bold) he won't back down. This is the worst of Washington and the worst of America. Congress drafted this bill and if Mr. Wilson wants edits he should insert himself in the conversation not stomp his feet and act as if he is disenfranchised. Shame on Mr. Wilson and shame on Americans who buy into his brand of politics of the lowest common denominator of critical thinking.

This is absolute nonsense. If the Republicans want a clause about citizenship they should add it. If they want a clause about tort reform they should add it. If they want any clause about anything they should add it. All Republicans want to do is call anyone who is interested in solving the problem a 'zombie' or 'liar' or 'nazi'. This is a democracy. Participate rather than criticize. Republicans are at the table at every committee level. They have stated they want this to be Obama's Waterloo. Americans should not be having bake sales to pay for kidney transplants and Republicans should care more about getting Americans access to care than grandstanding.

So let's say the get an iron clad agreement against care for illegal immigrants. Are you and Mr. Wilson in?

Probably not. Let's call a spade a spade. If there are real issues Mr. Wilson should be using all his energy to march down to the White House and advocate for his constituents rather than shouting in Congress, railing on his website, and creating release after release about fabricated tales of Pelosi and Obama's takeover of America. This is far too serious an issue to be left to the intellectual rigor of Palin and every American, rich or poor, Republican or Democrat, should realize this is a quality of life issue for all of us not a watershed moment in political rancor.

What a creep Joe Wilson is, and dead wrong in his inflammatory accusations to boot. The health care bill has absolutely no provision at all whatsoever to cover illegals, so Obama is not lying. That means plain and simple, illegal immigrants are NOT eligible or covered or a part of this bill at all, period. White conservative good old boys with backwards ideas like this Johnson character are why America has fallen so far, why we can never make important progress while other countries prosper and improve. Obstructionists like Johnson, almost always Republicans, are destroying the future of America with every vote they cast to block progress, every mind they poison with their thinking, every voice they try to silence, every life they ruin and every vote they receive at the polls on election day. It's time to clean house, -vote them all out- and take away their jobs like they did to the American people under that cement headed moron Bush and his greedy, reckless, destructive criminal administration.

This is already the law. Illegals are not in any way getting healthcare coverage from the government, nor are they getting subsidies for healthcare from the government. There is no catch-22.

Yes. If they are injured or ill and show up at a hospital, they will, as is the practice now, be treated without their status being checked. The alternative turns hospitals into law enforcement and is also inhumane. Even if the human aspect of the alternative doesn't stir you, we can't have people dying on the streets. We can't have emts checking green cards with a central database, withholding care until a patient's status is ascertained. People will die and not just aliens. Do you carry proof of citizenship everywhere you go? Do you want to be required by the government to prove your status before a doctor can treat you? Or do you somehow imagine that only people who don't look like you will have to provide proof? Would you want someone you loved, God forbid, in a car accident and injured but without proof of citizenship, to have treatment refused until they could prove citizenship? Thats what you're requiring when you make hospitals check status. Kind of sounds like the government between you and your doctor.

"Why wont Dems add that clause in ? whats the answer ? can Obama zombies answer that ?"

Obama is The Decider now. Deal with it. He doesn't **have** to do things just because the other side asks for it any more than Bush did. Perhaps the next time Obama speaks to Congress, the opposition should be relegated to "Free Speech Zones." Or maybe he could put the desired clause in and then nullify it with a signing statement.

While the Republicans are wasting our time with fearmongering over fiction, Obama has yet to take advantage of the new presidential powers that George W. Bush created, which is what the GOP should really be afraid of.

The problem with liberals is that we're too damn willing to listen to and address the concerns of the conservatives, especially when they are not real concerns, but political obstructionist grandstanding.

It seems as if the Republicans have given up any hope of attracting rational people back into the GOP.

Posted by: wizard2 | September 11, 2009 12:09 AM | Report abuse

Perhaps the Republicans can watch future presidential addresses to a joint session of Congress from a "kiddie room" like they have in many churches where they can hear what the president says but none of the adults outside have to hear them crying and whining.

EMTALA has nothing to do with applying for subsidized health care.

Your comment is nonsensical. As long as you aren't covered by EMTALA, the hospital or doctor *does* have the right to ask you about insurance - and can even refuse treatment. *That's* what matters.

The point that the GOP is making is entirely different (because yours isn't applicable). They are concerned that even though the law states that it is illegal for undocumented aliens to use government matching funds for health insurance, that it doesn't specifically list how a health care provider is supposed to verify someone's residency status. This is a tempest in a teapot - how many illegal aliens are going to supply their tax returns to apply for government assistance anyway?

The current (identical) requirements in the Medicare law have been shown to have improperly refused medicare to some that should be able to apply to it - all because the law is inflexible, and for some citizens, difficult to prove.

Even if one doesn't trust that all of the tiny number of illegal aliens willing to risk discovery by applying for federal assistance for health insurance will be caught, I am much more comfortable knowing that we properly offer assistance to those that deserve it. I find it morally correct to err on the side of compassion.

Isn't it amazing what a ruckus can be kicked up by just two little words! In the interests of fairness and balance, as is so often stated on Fox News, someone needs to put in a good word for Congressman Wilson. He has apologized and that needs to be taken into consideration. We can be confident that Mr. Wilson, in the fine tradition of Southern gentlemen, is very unlikely to ever shout such a thing to a white man, be he a president or otherwise. Deep down in our hearts, we all understand perfectly well where Congressman Wilson is coming from by his remark, and where at some point in the future he is likely to wind up. Let's hope that these comments bring some comfort and solace to all concerned ...

Rep. Wilson is actually correct when he says illegal immigrants will be covered. Why? Because efforts to amend the bill (HR 3200) to include immigration and citizenship status verification were defeated by the Democrats. Medicaid requires legal residency status verification prior to enrollment, so why not health care reform? Simply inserting language stating illegal immigrants won't be covered is meaningless if you don't include enforcement provisions that ensure illegal immigrants actually aren't covered. But as the bill is currently written, there is no mechanism to verify residency status, none. Anyone can sign up, no one will check to ensure legal residency status.

It's just another version of "don't ask, don't tell." So yes, Obamacare will cover illegal aliens, all they have to do is sign up, no one will verify their status.

Posted by: adhughes | September 11, 2009 2:00 AM | Report abuse

Thank you, lostinthemiddle and iamweaver, for explaining so clearly what is at the heart of this matter. People screaming about illegals don't realize they're confusing insurance with treatment.

And those who are in such a [manufactured] panic over the lack of enforcement provisions are clearly not thinking through the logistics of checking for proof of citizenship before medical treatment.

What do conservatives suggest--national identity cards for everyone in America? Because that's the logical result of your misplaced fears or prejudice--whatever is motivating you.

And what the heck--the fact that Republicans are not getting their way 100% somehow translates to the necessity of calling the president a liar on national TV? The Republican party has proven once again in the past week it has no sense of perspective (or decency) whatsoever.

I wouldn't have thought it possible, but Joe Miller has branded himself as even more of a sleazebag with his pathetic pandering for money after behaving like a 10-year-old brat on national television. Yep, he's a genuine hero alright.

Why are we spending $100 billion a year on war mongering in Afghanistan? I guess a little smooth talk will sell some people anything, even a 1000 page bill Obama needed to rush through before anyone read it. Now it is Obama using scare tactics and making backroom deals with Big Pharma that will keep drug costs high in exchange for $150,000,000 in Obamacare ads.(look it up)

For twenty two years, my practice of law as an attorney has focused on the United States Constitution, its text, its meaning, its construction, and its application. More particularly, my practice has emphasized the law of the First Amendment. So, when I watched the Obama speech to Congress, heard the Joe Wilson retort, "you lie," and then followed the outbursts in news and media, I had a rich background of constitutional information against which to evaluate the controversy.

What that background leads me to conclude about Joe Wilson's retort, and about the power of the House of Representatives to discipline him for it, follows here.

Is House of Representatives free to do whatever it pleases to Joe Wilson, pursuant to the power to make rules for its proceedings? Is it possible that the power of the House to censure Joe Wilson is constrained by other constitutional provisions?

Article I of the Constitution provides each House of Congress the power to make its own rules of proceeding and the power to be the judges of the qualifications of members. But even the exercise of those seemingly unconstrained powers is subject to review under the Constitution, as the Supreme Court demonstrated when it held that Congress had wrongly denied Adam Clayton Powell the right to be seated during its investigation of previous wrong-doing. That case was Powell v. McCormack.

Does the Constitution constrain the House in any particular regarding its displeasure with Joe Wilson's retort?

The First Amendment guarantees Joe Wilson a right equal to that of those who interrupted the President's remarks to applaud Obama's proposals, criticisms and ideas.

Under the First Amendment, the most heinous action against the expression of ideas is a regulation of speech that prefers one viewpoint on a subject over another viewpoint.

Senators and Representatives interrupted Obama's remarks repeatedly, to applaud those remarks. By doing so, those Senators and Representatives intended to show support for the President, and support for the particular ideas and proposals that elicited applause.

Those interruptions to applaud set a standard relevant to constitutional limitations on the power of the House to discipline a Member for conduct. Because it is, apparently, permissible to interrupt remarks to show support for those remarks, the First Amendment COMMANDS that expressions of the opposing viewpoint be given like shelter under the Constitution.

So here's how it goes: no applause ever and no boos and catcalls. Or, allowing applause for ideas expressed in remarks commands allowing like expressions, but of disapproval.

..."The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan,.."

no, you are the one that brought the issue to the forefront, and distracted everyone, you wimp.

who is this guy anyways? RNC putting all their money in this dork's basket?
Smooth move again.

Bye bye conservative repuslives. Your tabus, morals, family values, and the way you "project" beliefs onto the people of this country.....are over. The greatest generation is over with.

And because of the state of the union and the way repulsives have left it,
I will not go quietly----
I will be one that goes to my window and screams "I am mad as hell".

I am an Ike baby that knows exactly "where you are comin' from"!!! Been watchin' this crooked political stuff for years pilgrims.

Joe Wilson is the typical example of "elected official going crooked after he gets in office". Call it greed, or call it power. They lose it once they are elected, and it is a shame.

Get elected, get crooked. The new mantra.

He is anti American in my personal opinion so why is he in Congress? He is nothing short of a domestic terrorist and he has NO respect for the highest office in our country. The GOP were talking crazy because Obama wanted to talk to the kids, well how about an elected official from the far right yelling to the POTUS "You Lie" in an open joint session of Congress that was televised around the world! He is as bad as the Iraqi that threw his shoes at Bush, except he is an elected United States Government Representative. How disgusting to have a man like that representing the United States in any capacity. I think the far right has lost all credibility and objectivity and they are the party of "Fools and disrespect for the American peoples choice for POTUS".

If they had a plan all they had to do is prepare a draft of it and submit it. Some of the American people are easily mislead, but the majority of us are not going to risk their families future and health care insurance because a man with mental health issues that happens to represent the Republican Party lost his mind in Congress during one of the most important official government speeches that is dealing with an issue as important as health care reform. As an American citizen and registered voter, I do not want my grand children to remember what a sad moment in our history that outburst was. That kind of behavior is totally unacceptable. It was a disruptive, offensive outbreak that has to be dealt with as a serious threat to the American way of life.

I think he should go away and never be allowed to spread his nasty attitude to the American people ever again!! That goes for all of those who oppose the American Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

Congress is not the place for childish, racist antics and it should not be tolerated.

To ConstitutionalCounselor @ 8:34 AM :

It's NOT whether Mr. Wilson had the Constitutional right to yell out as he did, or not.
Like you, he's just a jerk who doesn't understand "good manners" !

Oh, for God's sake, you Repugs never get it right, do you? You tried having citizenship checks for Medicare or Medicaid during the Bush years. You caught a tiny number of illegals, and you prevented vast numbers of citizens from getting care because they didn't keep the required documents handy. Your own Bush administration abandoned the effort. Either you know that and you are evil liars or you do not know that and are ignorant fools. Take your pick.

Time for Censure. He didn't apologize. He stood up and said that the Republican Leadership said he had to say he was sorry so, he said he was sorry.

The devolution of the Republican Party into an Obama-denying, election defying, extreme right wing "Christian" splinter group is stunning. How long before a Palin/Wilson ticket heads the New American Fascist Party?

Please, point to all the places where "liberals" have said they WANT the government to cover health care for illegals. Find one, and I'll gladly agree that person is a fool.

We cover health care for illegals right now, under the current system. When Republicans had control of the government, why didn't they do something about it? Ah, because the current, ineffective, inefficient system has no way to prevent it. See, that's part of the problem with the CURRENT "system" - actually more of just a costly mess, the least effective and efficient health care in teh world. but hey, way to fight the "good" fight.

We'll solve the illegal immigration problem when Republicans agree to severely punish anybody who hires them. But they don't want that, do they?

Are all of you liberal trolls on ACORN's payroll? I am sure that eventually all of the "contributions" to Wilson's opponent will be traced back to the DNC or George Soros.

Liberals screamed horrible lies about President Bush, why I even remember congressional democrats booing President Bush, and nary a word about that from you.

Joe Wilson is a patriot. I wish there were more like him in congress.

I am going to make a contribution to his re-election campaign today.

the illegal question is best answered by your state law. state law guided by federal law.

bum fr** egypt here is a border state.

we have bodies all over the place.
how someone died on the border is not as important as sanitation and clean up.

so the low income health insurance plan that the state offers (with federal funding attached) - is just about non-existent for anyone who is left alive in this desert heat. left alive and registered in some capacity (green card, red card, INS passport).

and that about sums it up from here.
so whatever healthcare is passed, i am most anxious to see what, indeed, bum fr** egypt does with it.

If people like Wilson were sincere (and intelligent) they would be trying to effect the legislation in ways that would make it more fair to the private sector, like finding a solution to "cost transfer" or "cost shifting," the practice of hospitals and doctors charging one payer more to compensate for another payer paying less in a contract arrangement. A notable example is individuals having a higher pay schedule than insurance companies and government payers.

Another legislative solution would be to find a simple way we can utilize existing State health care program infrastructures, (presently supplemented by medicaid) and integrate them into a public option program of funding, criteria and standard national standards.

From what I heard, Obama and many democrats will not sign off on a provision that would make US citizens provide a drivers license or some sort of ID to prove citizenship in this one payer plan. This is why Obama lies. I stand by Wilson, and he is also receiving political contributions for standing up to the lies, but I'm sure the media will keep quiet about that fact. Also, what happened to freedom of speech in this country? oh yea, that only applies to the obnoxious code pink people, right? I find it hypocritical that the same people who find this man offensive, got such a thrill when someone threw a shoe at President Bush.

Heard from where? Rush Limbaugh? Any program, bank account, government program needs ID.

That's been the hallmark of this debate with most Republicans. False hearsay forged as "truth" in the media. That's why the Democrats need to stop courting the Republicans and get on with the business of reforming the system and providing universal care.

Only serious honest respectful politicians need apply themselves. The rest should be ignored or censored.

Democrats need to move forward without Republican support.

Bush's tax cuts and the Republican welfare deform were both done by reconciliation. Democrats can play that game too.

Apparently, you think these two things, illegals and bankruptcy, are directly related. I wonder how worse off you'd be if the crops were rotting in the field with no Mexican workers?

After the gringos kicked off the Mexican residents off their own land in the 19th century, and then us whites stoled the homes and businesses from the Japanese who were interned, now you are whining.

It's not good, but it's just our own injustice blowing back at us with a vengence, like it did 9/11/01.

Many of you are missing the point by arguing from your own narrow political perspective.

The country is going down in flames as the President Barry O. employs Alinksky power tactics to propagate a series of factual misrepresentations (e.g. "lies") regarding his health care agenda (FYI, President Sotero has yet to offer up a bill, only ~$900 billion in concepts).

Rep. Wilson vocalized what many folks, from all stripes and persuasions, were yelling at their TV screens. Un-opposed, un-challenged lies - one after the other, from a podium once respected and reserved for political discourse - not pointed insults at vocal opposition.

One final question - where's the acknowledgement that despite its faults we still have the greatest health-care system in the world? A shout out for tireless physicians and nurses who save our lives daily? Or acknowledgement of the existence of the vocal majority of 52% of this country who oppose Obama-care (e.g. HR 3200) as it currently stands?

Some asked What would Jesus Do? Where in the Bible did Jesus say Charity goes through the government? Pope Leo XIII said, when a government tells you they are going to take your money to aide the poor, it is a sin against Natural Law. It is stealing. Once the government provides everything, that governmenet replaces God. That is why Jesus said that the one coin given by the widow was worth more then all the large donations of others. That charity is judged by the intent of the heart, not how much is collected by the IRS.

I hate to bore you with the facts but EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) was signed into law by that crazy liberal Ronald Reagan in 1986. The Republicans were the majority in the Senate; the Democrats in the House.

The statute was designed principally to address the problem of "patient dumping," whereby hospital emergency departments deny uninsured patients the same treatment provided paying patients, either by refusing care outright or by transferring uninsured patients to other facilities. Reports of patient dumping rose in the 1980s, as hospitals, generally unencumbered by any state law duty to treat, faced new cost containment pressures. There were some very famous cases during this period that involved pregnant women being shuffled from one hospital to another; thus the name of the law.

Congress responded by passing EMTALA, which imposes on Medicare-provider hospitals a duty to afford medical screening and stabilizing treatment to any patient who seeks care in a hospital emergency department (ED). EMTALA ONLY applies to EDs.

Like I said, I hate to bore you with the facts.

Hey, SWATKINS1 - read the next day's CAPITOL BRIEFING column and maybe you can eat the words with a little salt on it! "Joe Wilson expected to top $1 million in contributions by the weekend - Rob Miller stuck at $1 M, $0.3 M of which is outstanding campaign debt..."

The "fact checkers" the Post like to cite are correct in a very narrow sense: Obamacare does say no goverment healthcare for illegals. But if there is no enforcement mechanism for ensuring the person getting tax payer funded healthcare is actually a U.S. citizen and Obma and the Democrats shot down Republican amendments to the Obamacare bill that would have contained those enforcement mechanisims then saying illegals won't get U.S. taxpayer funded healthcare is a lie. Also, if Obamacare passes the goverment will be taking over your healthcare. No matter what Obamacare supporters say. Massive new goverment bueracacies are involved with huge amounts of new goverment spending. If that's not a goverment takeover of healthcare I don't know what is.

Now Wilson must be aware that he was a bad boy. Rather than formally disapproving of Wilson, why not send him to the corner for 15 minutes to think about what he did. Wilson was obviously aware that the Democrats disapproved of what he said, and that the Republicans didn't. That's why the vote went along party lines. I don't see the point of formally disapproving. If the resolution was to make a point, then they should have made a point. Instead, Democrats chose to stick his nose in it and make him sleep in the backyard.
