Landrieu to vote yes on key health-care test

By Paul Kane
Leaving Democrats one vote short with hours to go, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) declared Saturday she will support a key procedural step to advance President Obama's health-care legislation.

In a Senate floor speech just before 1 p.m., Landrieu said she would support the motion to begin debate on the legislation, ending days of silence on the matter. Landrieu's move leaves just Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) as the only undeclared Democrat, with the other 59 senators in the Democratic caucus backing this early step.

"My vote today to move forward ... should in no way be construed" as signaling what her final vote will be, Landrieu said, indicating that she wants to work on amending the bill on the Senate floor. "Much work needs to be done."

Her remarks came during a rare Saturday session during which the Senate launched the final hours of debate leading up to a nighttime vote that serves as a critical early test for President Obama's health-care proposal.

"Doing nothing is not an option," Landrieu said. Her support was garnered in part by a provision in the bill that would deliver higher Medicaid payments to Louisiana health-care providers.

Shaping up as a cliffhanger, all but one of the 60 senators in the Democratic caucus have indicated their support for this early vote, which, if successful, serves to begin what will likely be several weeks of debate on dozens of amendments before a possible final vote before Christmas.

Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) needs the last holdout, Lincoln, to reach the 60-vote threshold to move forward with the debate. No Republican senator is expected to vote for this initial step.

In line with Lincoln's demand for a 72-hour period to read the legislation, the key vote is expected at 8 p.m. Saturday, exactly 72 hours from the point Reid unveiled his health-care proposal Wednesday night.

Debate began at 10 a.m., with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) - a 35-year veteran of the Senate - discussing the decades-long effort to achieve national health-insurance. Leahy quoted from Obama's address to a joint session of Congress two months ago, just after their close friend, the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), died after a lengthy fight with cancer.

Leahy urged his colleagues to pass the legislation in Kennedy's honor. "What we face above all is a moral issue," Leahy said of Kennedy's wishes.

We now all know the way to deal with CORRUPT Louisiana POLITICIANS: BRIBE THEM.

Did reid also provide her with a william-jefferson-type freezer to store her loot?

Let's see now, Landrieu is bought off with $100M for her state...

Add that to all the other back door bribes taking place and know that all these costs will be buried in the health form bill.

It's business as usual in Washington.

$100,000,000 of freshly printed Federal Reserve Notes or borrowed from China to bribe the Louisiana Senator. Now that's what I call great creativity and leadership from the Majority Leader!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both, Landrieu and harry Reid, need to be charged with ethics violations.

The 100 million dollar fleecing they pulled with U.S taxpayers dollars is nothing short of criminal.

And yet all the other, Gangstercrats see no problem with it.

This is really amusing. you clowns have an overwellming advantage over the good in the House and Senate and you cannot pass this bill. Reid, pelosi,OSAMA and the rest have to be the biggest group of losers ever.

Well, I guess we now know what the going rate is for a bribe - $100 million - and guaranteed that 'er person will stand before the cameras and sincerely declare that the $100 million bribe had NOTHING to do with her deciding to support the bill which will bankrupt this country.

Yes. It is a moral issue for every member of the Senate. For nearly all Republicans it is the moral question of reducing health insurance company profits or NOT reducing health insurance company profits. The campaign contributions from health insurance companies speak volumes to Republicans and some Democrats in the Senate. Problem solving? It's not a question of problem solving. The problems that other people have (with a rigged market) is of no concern to members of Congress. Getting re-elected is their primary concern.

Wow. That's a big vote. She was one of the doggiest of blue dogs. Just one more vote to go -- Blanche Lincoln. And with a name like that she could not possibly vote to kill this landmark legislation to help the poor and less fortunate.

Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?

Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course...

Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?

Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!

Churchill: Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.

This vote on the Senate floor will show which Democratic senators have a back bone and which don't. I for one will vote out of office anyone who lacks the toughness to do the right thing even when it is unpopular. If you let fear of not being reelected keep you from doing the right thing then you need to go. Democrats are seen as being weak for this very reason. Let's get some much needed legislation passed, do some good for the people of your state, and show the republicans for what they really are; obstuctionists out to protect big business by letting insurance companies charge what they want and insure who they want.

If Blanche Lincoln stands tough and votes "no" it will be because she's doing what her constituents want her to do...which is what she was elected to do, right? Arkansas voted overwhelmingly for McCain in 2008...as such, it's likely that those same voters oppose the current health care bill.

Hopefully she will show some backbone and vote the way she should - "NO".

Mr. McConnell warned of the political consequences for senators who vote to move ahead. “Senators who support this bill have a lot of explaining to do,” Mr. McConnell said. “Americans know that a vote to proceed on this bill, to get on this bill, is a vote for higher premiums, higher taxes and massive cuts to Medicare.”

I'm not too surprised by Landrieu's decision. By and large the Senate and the house could not stand up to a RICO investigation. Everyone there has their price. The rep's from Louisiana are just shrewder at rounding up the bucks. The Katrina damage was estimated at $43B and so far over $140B has been allocated. Those in the Louisiana have managed to steal most of the money. It's their nature. Landrieu is a product of dirty politics -- it's the Dem way and we, as lowly voters, can do little about it. It'll be interesting to see how much Lincoln will be able to steal for the great state of Missouri. Our rep's don't realize how detested they are -- well anyway, they don't care. If they are not reelected, so what. As the elite of America they have covered their retirement and medical insurance needs for the rest of their lives. They'll just go back to practicing law and chasing ambulances -- like Edwards.

So all it cost all taxpayers was 100 million to buy her vote. Now who is worse - her for accepting it and selling out or for Reid to use taxpayer money to buy a Senate vote? I would consider that about as unethical as it comes from the Leader of the Senate. Can everyone demand that all those nice provisions that got put in there for his own benefit in getting re-elected in Nevada get stripped out of the bill?

What I wouldn't give to be in Lincoln's shoes if I was a Democrat. U.S. Senator Russ Feingold made a name for himself by being the only Democrat to vote for Clinton's impeachment, and Russ has been elected ever since.

Of course, the $100,000,000 bribe that Landrieu took to pay for Louisiana's portion of Medicaid worked to get her vote. Now the "federal government" will pay for it. Do the voters in the other 49 states realize that they will be paying for the medical care in Louisiana?

We The People will defeat the republican jihad on America!

Over two terms of the, "republican reign of error", these failed republican war criminals had no problem spending a TRILLION dollars to kill 1,339,771 Iraqis, mostly innocent non-combatant women and children.

Now they're against spending that would save the lives of 45 THOUSAND innocent American infants, toddlers, children, teens, young adults, women, men, and elderly US Citizens!

The republican'ts are now more dangerous to US Citizens than al-Quaeda!

Their war on health care reform is conclusive proof that the republican't party, it's vastly failed leadership, hypocritically moronic media lackeys, demented constituents, and self serving corporatist agenda are not only the sworn enemy of 45 THOUSAND innocent American infants, toddlers, children, teens, young adults, women, men, and elderly US Citizens.

They are the proven enemy of our Nation, our Constitution, and The American People!

If we can afford an illegitimate pre-emptive republican war without end, we can and must afford to save the lives of 45,000 US Citizens who will die without needed health care insurance.

Failure by ANY Legislator to do so, will never be forgiven or forgotten! The avoidable DEATHS of 45 THOUSAND US Citizens will be AVENGED at the polls.

The republican't reign of error has ended and their fraudulent reign of terror will not stand!

The NEXT ELECTION is less than 1 year away!

I know bribery has not been a crime in DC since Spiro Agnew got nailed for it but $1 for every person, even the illegal ones should be annoyed at Mary L.

Just imagine the windfall for big population states if Boxer, Feinstein, Shumer et. al. and the fringe groups pick up on this.

California Earthquake preparedness relief...$10-50 Billion at least,

New York graft and corruption training grants...$15 billion pilot project

Another airport for John Murtha $10-$20 million.

The black congressional caucus $20-30 Billion.
Funding for the woman's, hispanic, veteran's, catholic, independent and of course senior congressional cauci.

The possibilities are endless.

Sadly, congress is even more creative then I, when it comes to stealing and bribery but it's all for "the children".

I cannot understand why Jindal has not talked to Landrieu. I wouldn't think he was backing her accepting this bribe & I wish I could get in touch with him to find out. She & many other Democrats are not going to be re-elected in 2010 because of healthcare & cap & trade. I guess they just don't care. The more of these whimps that will not stand up for their constituents need to be replaced. You have got to listen to your people & when you let yourself be bribed or too scare not to go along with your party are not worth what you are getting paid. What really angers me is that once they leave office they still get their pay checks & their insurance & do not have to worry about those of us they want to stick on rationed health care where so many of us will be sent home with pain pills to die.
