Morning Links

It's that time of year. Football has a big game for the season -- and Coach Al Groh's future -- against a border rival. Men's basketball begins practice during the first season of the Tony Bennett era. Women's basketball prepares for a season that will likely begin with Debbie Ryan's 700th win. Groh, Bennett and Ryan each addressed reporters Monday, which means a big day for links...

You can read in this morning's Washington Post about the renewed optimism in the Cavaliers' basketball program. Bennett, though, is keeping realistic about Virginia's possibilities this season. But the good news is that basketball season is in the air.

The football team has benefited from its veterans, writes Jerry Ratcliffe. Dave Fairbanks credits Virginia for the turnaround, but the problem is no one is watching. The October revival should not be much of a surprise. And Mikell Simpson has been a big reason.
