I spoke last night with John Culp, the father of Virginia running back Mikell Simpson. Culp said Simpson is eager to return to the field after suffering a neck injury in the third quarter of last week’s win over Indiana, but that his status for Saturday’s game against Maryland will rest with the doctors.
“It’s going to be a doctor’s decision. That’s what it’s going to come down to,” Culp said. “He wants to play, without a doubt. Basically, the doctors gave him a thumb’s up, said everything’s cool and everything, but I don’t know if they’re going to let him play right away. They checked the spinal cord and vertebrae, and everything’s good. …Nothing that’s going to stop him in the long term. They’re just going to have to check how tender it is, that’s the thing.”
Simpson is from Harrisburg, so the game at College Park is as close as he'll play to home all season. Culp said a large Harrisburg contingent is hoping to travel to the game. The fans, combined with his past performance at Maryland, have made Saturday's game especially important to Simpson, Culp said.
Read more about Simpson in Thursday's Post.
