Unhappy Halloween

Saturday's game against Duke comes on Halloween, a day that has been more trick than treat for Virginia football. Virginia is 5-8 on Halloween, although this week's game will be only the fourth Halloween home game. The Cavaliers are 2-1 in their previous three Halloween games.

The last Halloween game was in 1998, when Virginia topped Wake Forest, 38-17. The last home game was 1992, when Virginia lost, 13-3, to No. 6 Florida State.

Of course, Coach Al Groh thinks the referees celebrated Halloween one week early when they called what has been described by same fans as a "phantom" personal foul in the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss to Georgia Tech.

"I have the same question you might have," Groh said. "I guess Halloween was one week early. You know, Ghostbusters or whatever."
