Wright named first-team all-American

Some women’s basketball news…

Virginia senior guard Monica Wright was named to the Associatied Press all-America team. Is the first Virginia player to earn the honor since current assistant coach Wendy Palmer in 1995-96.

The Woodbridge native attended Forest Park High. She had previously been named ACC preseason player of the year.

“Monica took the summer to really, really work on her game and just has a great attitude coming into the year,” Coach Debbie Ryan said last month. “She’s an even better leader this year than she was last year. …I’m really, really impressed with the way she’s handled her team. She’s there for everybody and is the consummate leader out there. But obviously her game herself has taken another step forward. She’s going to anchor our defense, she’s going to spear-head our offense. She’s just as fast coming up and down the court. She elevates extremely really well. And I know she’s worked really hard on getting a change of pace in her game. She’s not just one speed all the time.”
