Virginia 72, No. 24 UAB 63

This was the win Virginia needed before the ACC begins. As I wrote on Cavaliers Journal earlier, the Cavaliers had not experienced a banner win -- or at least a victory that you could use as testimony that this team will compete in the ACC.

It would a leap to take this one win as an indication that Virginia has turned the corner this season, but it's safe to look at three areas (each of which I'll expand upon in the next three days) as positives:

- Freshman guard Jontel Evans is an impressive player. Although he did not arrive with much hype, he can play on-the-ball defense better than anyone else on Virginia's roster.

- The offense is much more balanced when Mike Scott's in the lineup. When there's a threat to score, the team is much more dynamic.

- Sylven Landesberg is rounding out his game. He has not made as much a leap in scoring as I expected in his sophomore season, but he's involving teammates more than he did last season.
