Virginia vs. Alabama-Birmingham preview

When: 7 p.m.

Where: John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville.

Radio: WWXT (92.7 FM), WWXX (94.3 FM), WTEM (980 AM).

Records: Cavaliers 6-4; No. 24 Blazers 11-1.

Scott's return: Mike Scott has missed the last three games with a high-ankle sprain, although it appears Virginia's starting power forward will return to the lineup on Wednesday. Scott is the Cavaliers' top offensive player in the paint and averaged 13.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in the season's first seven games. His return will likely move junior walk-on Will Sherrill out of the starting lineup.

Blazing hot: UAB does not enter John Paul Jones Arena with a marquee name, but the Blazers are among the nation's hottest teams. They have wins over Cincinnati and Butler, both of which were ranked at the time. Even more impressive, both wins were by double-digit margins. The Blazers have not played since their Dec. 22 victory over the Bulldogs, although they joined the top 25 in the interim. Former Indiana coach Mike Davis leads UAB; Louisiana-Lafayette transfer Elijah Millsap tops the team with 15.4 points and 9.8 rebounds.

Farewell, 2009: If Coach Tony Bennett achieves success at Virginia, 2009 will be remembered as a positive year for the Cavaliers. But as the team plays its final game of the year, few will be sorry to see it go. Virginia is 10-18 since the calendar turned in the middle of last season. Bigger than any game, though, was the departure of former coach Dave Leitao and the arrival of Bennett.
