Football: Shawn Moore to be Virginia assistant

Virginia is set to hire former Cavaliers quarterback great Shawn Moore as an assistant coach. Moore, who is an administrator and assistant football coach at St. Albans in the District, will return to his alma mater to coach either quarterbacks or wide receivers, depending upon the rest of the staff. He will recruit the Washington/Maryland/Northern Virginia area.

One of the great players in Virginia history, Moore finished fourth in the 1990 Heisman Trophy balloting. He played four seasons in the NFL and later in the Canadian Football League.

Although Moore has never recruited, it's the part of the job that excites him the most. He feels he's prepared to sell the school -- and himself -- considering his experience. Moore has known Mike London for most of the decade and developed a relationship with Virginia's coach.

Moore's son, Michael Moore, is a sophomore defensive end at DeMatha.
