Update on Sylven Landesberg

Sylven Landesberg desperately wanted to play on Sunday against Duke. More than two hours before the game, I sat courtside watching Landesberg go through shooting drills. He was hitting shots, but was not running.

Landesberg did not come out with the team during formal warm-ups, instead working in Virginia's practice court with Coach Tony Bennett watching. Bennett gave Landesberg a chance to make a hard cut.

"He couldn't even move," Bennett said.

Bennett does not want to risk Landesberg's long-term health. Landesberg is dealing with a right thigh bruise suffered last Tuesday. Virginia plays at Boston College on Wednesday and closes the season at home against Maryland on Saturday.

On Monday, Bennett again addressed Landesberg's status. Virginia does not practice until this evening, although Landesberg received treatment.

"He'll be day-to-day, and we'll just check his status," Bennett said.

Bennett said the determination will be made Wednesday. He hopes to have a player practice before playing, although Bennett did not rule out Landesberg playing without practice if he feels healthy enough.

"When it's an injury think and it's not a disciplinary thing, if he can go on the day of the game, there's a big turnaround certainly, yes, I would play a kid that way," Bennett said.
