Spring football preview: Key players sidelined because of injury
Note: Cavaliers Journal introduces the top story lines entering Virginia's spring football game on Saturday at Scott Stadium. The team takes the field at 12:30 p.m. for a warm-up period, with the scrimmage beginning at 2 p.m.
Some of the roster’s top returning players have been limited in spring practice because of injury, so the product on the field Saturday will not be entirely complete. Conrath, Wallace, tight end Joe Torchia and safety Corey Mosley have been out during the spring. Linebacker Steve Greer and defensive tackle Brent Urban suffered injuries during practices. Wide receiver Javaris Brown has been held out of practices by London for personal reasons, but is still on the roster and must fulfill London’s demands to return to the roster.
“I’d like to think, optimistically, that with those guys in there, we’d be even better,” London said. “But what it’s done is given guys a chance as backups to develop depth.”
Saturday is not the final practice on Virginia’s spring schedule -- practice No. 15 comes April 12 -- but it is the last competitive opportunity for those who have practiced to impress their coaches before injured players return and freshmen arrive.
“This is a big practice because it’s going to set the depth chart going into the fall,” London said.
