Quick hits from Jim Reid teleconference
Virginia Defensive Coordinator Jim Reid spoke with reporters a short while ago via teleconference, and here are the highlights:
- Reid said the team's three primary defensive tackles -- fifth-year senior John-Kevin Dolce and redshirt juniors Nick Jenkins and Matt Conrath -- will rotate into Saturday's season opener against Richmond by series. Dolce and Jenkins will start.
- Redshirt junior Darnell Carter is listed as interchangeable with sophomore LaRoy Reynolds at the starting strong-side linebacker spot on Virginia's depth chart. According to Reid, Carter -- who was not enrolled at Virginia in 2008-09 after being suspended for academic reasons -- has done well in his classes since the new coaching regime arrive and has "really excelled in the mental phase of the game" since the start of training camp. Carter and Reynolds will rotate into Saturday's game, Reid said.
- Reid said sophomore Steve Greer -- who is listed as interchangeable at the starting middle linebacker spot with redshirt junior Aaron Taliaferro -- has "lost a little bit of weight and really looks fast and quick out there." Listed at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, Greer spent part of training camp getting back up to full speed after a high ankle injury kept him out of a good portion of spring practices.
- As for the team's safeties, Reid said junior Rodney McLeod "is the leader of the group. He does a terrific job." McLeod is listed as interchangeable at the starting strong safety spot with fifth-year senior Trey Womack. Reid said Womack is "going to play an awful lot because he's really done a magnificent job. All through the spring and the summer he's really played with a lot of energy and he just seems a little bit quicker and a little bit faster than he was before. We're really excited to play him. He'll alternate in there, as well."
