Ross Metheny to serve as UVA's No. 2 quarterback Saturday

Virginia Coach Mike London said in a teleconference Thursday that redshirt freshman Ross Metheny will serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback Saturday in the Cavaliers' season opener against Richmond. When the depth chart was released Monday, Metheny had been listed as interchangeable at the primary backup quarterback spot with true freshman Michael Rocco.

London also said true freshman defensive tackle Chris Brathwaite has been getting some reps in practice "just in case." Brathwaite has seen more action in practice while redshirt freshman defensive end Brent Urban has continued to recover from a knee injury.

"You never know in a game, you know, what happens," London said. "But I'd like to be able to hang on to as many freshmen as I can and give them the opportunity to redshirt."

Over the past month, London repeatedly has stated his desire to redshirt as many freshmen as possible, though he has acknowledged that several will see playing time this season. Cornerbacks Rijo Walker and Drequan Hoskey, as well as offensive tackle Morgan Moses were the true freshmen London mentioned Thursday will play against Richmond.

He noted that true freshman tailback Kevin Parks will travel with the team, but the coaching staff will be hesitant to play him and burn his opportunity to redshirt this season.

On the injury front, London refrained from revealing a specific update. Teams are not required to release injury reports during weeks before non-conference games, and Virginia elected not to do so this week.

"I think going into (Saturday) we still have some guys hobbling a little bit, you know, but with treatment and a couple days left we'll see how they look at game time," London said. "I can't say we'll be at 100 percent, but I know we'll be close to it."
