MELtdown: Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade

By Liz Kelly

Mel Gibson has officially earned the title Mad Max. His mouth is a registered Lethal Weapon and he'll henceforth move through Hollywood as the Man Without a Face. His career is best-described as Apocalypto.

Why am I making free and easy with the movie-title-assisted Gibson bashing? Because Gibson has inserted his foot so firmly in his mouth it may be impossible to dislodge. Following a Friday arrest for allegedly driving drunk in Malibu, Gibson spewed a litany of anti-Semitic remarks -- all of which were duly recorded by sheriff's's deputies and conveniently leaked to gossip site (TMZ also reports Gibson had been stopped -- and released -- twice for previous driving incidents.)

Gibson has issued an apology for his "out of control" behavior.

LOL. There a cover story in the Post Magazine on Sunday about toxic parents. Perhaps Mrs. Lohan should read it and see if she recognizes herself.

Someone should sit Lindsay Lohan down and make her read a good biography of Marilyn Monroe and ask her two questions afterward- How much of a career do you want? and How long do you want to live?

I'm with Simone - read the _Post Mag_, Mrs. L.!

Isn't Lindsay Lohan 19 years old?! What's the deal with her mommy releasing statements about how mean the studio executives are who want her spoiled baby to come to work on time and do what they're paying her extravagantly for? Good grief. When will that girl be considered grown up? Will her mother still be leaping onto grenades when L.L. is still brattily gadding about at age 30?

Gibson is an idiot. No matter what apologies he issues, he's right, his career is f****d....and it should be!

Mrs. Lohan is pretty hot. I would be interested in "dating" here.

As to Mel Gibson, who cares. The post seems okay with Woody Allen (remember he's sleeping with Mia Farrow's daughter?), so this is just a minor speedbmp.

Mel Gibson, his drinking, his hateful anti-semitism and he and his father's Holocaust denials need to leave Hollywood. You know a few stupid stray comments that are insensitive can be ignored or forgiven, but this kind of irrational hate brought out by drinking is TOXIC. Goodbye to Mr. Gibson. May he indulge in his hate, prejudice and booze in private with his dad.

Separated at birth: Mel Gibson and Saddam Hussein.

to bunkley -- huh? what does woody allen's relationship with a consenting adult have to do with mel gibson's blatent hatred of an entire segment of society?

The above "liz" is not, ummm, this "Liz" who may linger for a few minutes if "The Bounty" happens to be on and shirts happen to be off.

Such a shame--I used to love Mel Gibson. His puckishness in movies like Lethal Weapon and Braveheart was so endearing. Now, like MJ and Tom Cruise, he's just another crazy, except that his brand of crazy is hateful. He denied and denied that Passion was anti-Semitic--I guess we know the buried truth now.

The Sherrif was wearing a yellow star of david badge, it was on the car of his squad car as well, so I can forgive Mel. Ain't no shame in being pro jewish ANTI zionist for a Free Lebanon a Free Israel and a Free Palestine, No Occupation, No Terror, No Walls, No Collective Punishment

"Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, called Gibson's apology "unremorseful and insufficient."

"It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry and his anti-Semitism," he said in a statement on the organization's Web site. "We would hope that Hollywood now would realize the bigot in their midst and that they will distance themselves from this anti-Semite."

To me, it appears Foxman may also have some issues. When someone apologizes and it is not accepted because it doesn't "...go to the essence..." of the remarks, that is asking too much. In otherwords, the apology will not be accepted until Foxman hears what he wants to hear, even though it may not apply to Gibson. Is it fair to require that of all people who apologize? Does Foxman have some bigotry against those who are no jewish?

can we first research what mel said, are the jews responsible for all the wars in the world, of course not but they were players in some of the major ones. my question is why do they have so so many enemies, and why do they feel so threaten in a land that was not theirs to begin with. in a situation like that sit down with all parties and have constant dialog. we do not want to see world war 3.

So wait a minute - the Jews are responsible for William Wallace's uprising against Longshanks in the 1300s? Does that mean Mel is going to give his Oscar back?

Don't worry, dude - the CHP may take your driver's liscence, but they will never take your FREEEEE-DOMMMMMM!

"why do they feel so threaten in a land that was not theirs to begin with"

Hey phillygroove, maybe you ought to do some research. If you want to squabble over land rights then maybe we should bring the Canaanites in, since they are (according to documented history and the Bible) the original habitants of Israel. The Israelites conquered them as peoples of that time tended to do. I am sure you all know the rest (Israelites booted out by Byzantines, then the Romans, etc etc etc... Zionist movement began an influx back into the BRITISH colony that Palestinians lived in, state of Israel formed in 48, fought over and won by Israel in 48, 67 and in minor skirmishes since). Not theirs?

"to bunkley -- huh? what does woody allen's relationship with a consenting adult have to do with mel gibson's blatent hatred of an entire segment of society"

I spelled it out, but you must be one of those people who purposely don't get things because you think it gives you the moral high ground.

Let me spell it out...
Woody Allen slept with Mia Farrow's daughter, and a child that he raised as his own daughter. That's borders on incest.

The post is okay with that. In fact, they just did an article last week about what a genius the guy is.

Mel Gibson allegedly made some anti-semetic remarks. Big deal. The whole world is racist at heart (not me, but I'm the exception that proves the rule), and so my point is that if the Post can get over woody allen sleeping with his daughter, then we should be big enough to forgive Mel Gibson for talking like a drunken idiot when he was, in fact, a drunken idiot.

Don't try to equate the guy with Hitler over a few remarks (that you have no idea about except the rumors swirling around).

Hey, Paris Hilton made a bunch of racist remarks, including calling people by the "N" word, and I see most of the world has forgotten about that.

I personally don't condone it, and it's wrong, and I've never made any remarks of this type, but a lot of you folks have and do, and as a man of color, I forgive all of you.

Posted by: Bunkley | July 31, 2006 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Mel Gibson's viscious and psychotic anti-Semetic remarks has cost him a career. No excuse will be accepted by Hollywood moguls. Although he's a genius at raising money for movies that most people would never had guessed would make money, he'd best grow a foot to normal height, undergo plastic surgery and look either 20 years younger or 20 years younger as "Horace Kiddlehopper" or somesuch to ever make it in the Hollywood environs again. Hey, that's a good storyline for a movie!!!

Although he knew how to raise and make big buck$ as a movie guy, I never thought he was much of an actor. He was always posing & never had any range.

He sure hookwinked the Catholics and other pious, hard-core Christians with the Jesus story. But never again!

I'd not suggest he do a Holocaust story.

He is not just a drunk. He is nuts and stupid.

This sequence can't be recovered by a voiceover or a cutaway.

Newsflash: Mel's in rehab.

Is it wrong of me to hope he gets a Jewish therapist?

Posted by: Just Sayin | July 31, 2006 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Shucks! Make that "20 years younger or 20 years OLDER."

BTW our host Liz Kelly is RIGHT ON in far less words than I used about Mel Gibson.
