Friday List: Goodbye Songs

Today's Friday list was inspired by this beaut from across the pond: Britain's Bereavement Register announced that James Blunt's "Goodbye My Lover" tops a list of songs played at funerals. A look at the full list (below) makes it clear that a British funeral is now officially as boring as the music piped into my dentist's office. Still, this does force one's mind to consider the set list for one's own, ahem, sendoff. Depending on the desired reaction, music is one surefire way to render your post-partum guests elated, sad, wracked with guilt or -- if you're completely sadistic -- appalled. So, today's list: Choose 1 - 3 songs you'd want played at your final farewell. I'm actually having a hard time (I think the mental image of someone playing the "Dirty Dancing" theme song at a funeral is blocking my creative juices), so I'll stick with one song for...

Life Imitates Art: Jen and Vince 'Break Up'

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn have called it quits, or so sayeth Us Weekly. After letting this sink in for about .0005 seconds I can only draw the following conclusion: so what? Breaker-uppers Vaughn and Aniston. (Universal) Jen and Vince's relationship was a series of denials and sketchy photo ops anyway. Sure, there was a rumored $500,000 engagement ring, that one incident in Arizona where they were pulled over by cops and some casual snogging in Chicago; but where were the PDAs, the frolicking beach pics, the St. Tropez lap dances -- in short, where was the drama we've come to expect from stars of their stature? The only memorable things about the two over the past six months were Jen's interesting decision to pair short shorts with high heels (a big hit with the husband) and Vince's -- well, Vince doesn't have one. If the two are hoping to...

'Lost': Rehashing the Season Opener

Can I be in your book club? (AP) SPOILER ALERT A few quick thoughts on last night's season premiere. Please add yours to the comments section. - How bizarre is it that the Others have a quaint little suburban-ish compound and spend their days arguing over book club selections? Anyone catch which Stephen King book they were reading? And was the Other village as shocking as last year's season opening revelation of Desmond inside the hatch? - Juliet: Like her or hate her? She definitely proved untrustworthy, yet some groundwork for a power struggle with Ben (aka Henry Gale) seems to have been laid. - Why the different treatment for Jack? Why is he being kept inside and fed actual food while Sawyer (and apparently Kate) are being kept in some sort of decaying zoo enclosure eating kibble? - Any thoughts on what the "unpleasantness" promised to Kate over...

TomKat Moving to Virginia?

Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx at the September Redskins season opener. We can confirm that Jamie Foxx is NOT moving to Loudoun County. (Getty Images) News radio station WTOP and another local paper are both reporting that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may be finalizing a deal to purchase a $22 million home in Upperville, Va. The 1,100 acre Loudoun County farm boasts several barns, ponds and other horsey-set/landed gentry type accoutrements. As of this writing, Rick Lowe with the real estate agency representing the home says there is no confirmation that rumors surrounding Cruise and Holmes as the potential purchasers are true. Cruise and Holmes wouldn't be Loudoun's first bold name residents: Robert Duvall has made his home there for years. Update: The Examiner debunked their own gossip the following day with this story, denying that Tom and Katie will be taking up residence in Virginia....

Countdown to 'Lost'

For us East Coasters, it's t-minus five hours until the "Lost" season opener, not that I'm getting ridiculously over-excited or anything. I take comfort in the fact that I am not alone. We'll pick apart the episode in the morning, but if by some chance you can't watch or record tonight's premiere, ABC will make it available here tomorrow. While we wait, let's talk about our favorite character and speculate about his/her fate in episode one. I've got two -- Sawyer and Eko -- and both left off season two in pretty tight jams. I'm expecting we'll find out how Eko fared after the hatch blast and we'll get lots of lip, but no really forward motion in the story, from Sawyer....

Rethinking Ashlee (I'm Sure It'll Pass)

"Chicago-ans" Ashlee Simpson and Usher. (Getty Images) I'm the last person one would expect to find defending Ashlee Simpson and maybe I don't have to; maybe I'm overreacting to the catty remarks I've seen peppered around blog comment threads lately (including this blog's) bashing Ashlee's performance in London's production of "Chicago." Actually, it isn't her performance that's being criticized (especially since most keyboard critiquers have only seen a few minutes of video posted online) and, in fact, she's getting rave reviews from the press. What seems to be irking folks -- like one anonymous Us Weekly online reader, whose comment is excerpted below -- is that this junior poptart would even aspire to set foot on stage not owned by MTV. "Goes to show it's not what you know but who you know to get a leg up in the industry. She would have never made it had she...

Happy Birthday to...

(AP) Today I want to send special birthday wishes to Tommy Lee, who at the tender age of 44, is at the top of his game. Sure, he's a hard-partying, metalhead known more for once being married to Pam Anderson (and, she claims, giving her Hepatitis) than his drumming, but he's cannily managed to transcend the purgatory of VH1 Metal documentaries, introduce himself to a new generation and remain cool. From "Looks That Kill" to cameos in hip-hop videos, Tommy Lee, you still rock man. Resources: Tommy Lee's Official Site Tommy Lee bio (Wikipedia) Motley Crue Rock Star: Supernova...

Ready to Get 'Lost'?

Dude, I'm like so ready. (Reuters) I thought I'd hold off on posting about "Lost" until Thursday morning so we could kick off the season-long conversation actually having some new information with which to work. But, duh, wouldn't it be much more practical to spend the next 60 hours or so swapping speculation, rumors and predictions about the coming season? Absolutely. All we officially know about Wednesday night's episode is its title "A Tale of Two Cities" and, from an ABC press release, that "Jack, Kate and Sawyer begin to discover what they are up against as prisoners of 'The Others.'" The rest is, as they say, a big ol' cliffhanger. Did Mr. Eko and Locke survive the exploding hatch? What about Desmond -- did he save the island or set the castaways on a collision course with the Others? Will Michael and Walt really leave or will Michael's...
