Madonna Not Doing Adoption Process Any Favors

Madonna visits an orphanage in Malawi. (AP Photo/Shavawn Rissman) As reported in the Morning Mix, Madonna has gained custody of a one-year-old Malawi boy who she plans to adopt. Admittedly, it is a noble thing she's done: Madge is potentially giving this child a far better life than he could have lived had she not intervened and she's raising awareness about international adoptions. Right? I'm not so sure. First there is the argument that Madonna's sudden trip to Africa and adoption is not much more than a publicity stunt in a world that has increasingly come to expect stars to pose as humanitarians. I'd like to dismiss this right now. No matter the motivation, Madonna donated $3 million to Malawian charities and her presence there has given the large number of orphans (approximately 800,000) some much-needed attention. What does distress me is that Madonna was able to leave this...

'Lost': Episode 2 Dueling Analyses

Last night after the show ended, washingtonpost.com movies editor Jen Chaney and I talked "Lost." How did the Red Sox, Aldous Huxley and teen angst figure in last night's episode? Read on... Dude, long time no see. (AP) SPOILER ALERT! LIZ: Some juicy new information to process. Not surprisingly, most of it came in the last five minutes when Ben told Jack he'd lived his entire life on the island, proved they had some knowledge of the outside world and asked for Jack's cooperation in a yet-to-be-revealed way. We also had the short exchange between Kate and Rousseau's daughter, who seemed to be interested in the whereabouts of the previous occupant of Kate's cage -- who many last week suspected was an Other playing the role of a prisoner. Now it seems he may have been a bona fide prisoner named "Carl." The nicest touch in their exchange, though, was...

Tonight's 'Lost' Preview

'Lost's' Daniel Dae Kim. (AP) Just a quick heads up to remind folks that tonight is "Lost" night. The cryptically titled "Glass Ballerina" airs tonight on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. From the official site: "Sayid places Sun and Jin's lives in danger while trying to locate Jack, while Jack gets a tempting offer from his captors." I'm guessing it's not another grilled cheese. Hopefully this means we'll get some answers about the wellfare of Sun, Jin, Sayid, Locke, Hurley and the rest of the crew. Feel free to leave comments here before, during and after the show. Then tomorrow morning come back for post-show dueling analyses from washingtonpost.com movies editor Jen Chaney and me. P.S. Looks like ABC is now asking viewers to help build a new, official "Lost" wiki....

Hump Day Helper: NotStarring.com

Can you imagine an "American Beauty" without Kevin Spacey? Imagine, instead of Spacey, Chevy Chase pumping iron in his garage and taunting Annette Bening as Lester Burnham in the 1999 Academy Award-winning Best Picture. Luckily, we never had to find out if Chase was up to the task. Thanks to the U.K.'s Guardian, though, for publishing this list of stars who almost starred in some of the biggest movies of the last century. Shudder at the thought of Kevin Costner as "The Matrix's" Neo or Julia Roberts trying to hobble her way through an English accent (again) in "Shakespeare in Love." (Kate Winslet also apparently turned down the role that won Gwyneth Paltrow an Oscar, according to a recent EW interview.) Look over the Guardian's list and check out the new site notstarring.com for more near-misses (like O.J. Simpson as the Terminator). This site is good for at least 30...

Paris and Nicole, Together Again

Together again, BFF! (AP) Paris and Nicole are together again. After 18 months of successfully hating on each other (and simultaneously collaborating on making lots of money) the hatchet has been quietly buried courtesy of a steak dinner and a sleepover. "We are back!" the two said before driving away from Dan Tana's steakhouse Sunday night. Although it's still unclear why the feud started in the first place, the back-and-forth sniping between the "Simple Life" co-stars became a staple of tabloid pages and the blogosphere for the past year-and-a-half. Perhaps the tension between the two was no longer necessary since Paris now has a real rival in the form of Shanna Moakler, who she claimed punched her last week at a Hollywood night club. Or maybe the reconciliation was "encouraged" by the producers of their reality show, so they wouldn't have to go through the hassle of filming them...

Comment Box: Jen Gets Short Shrift

(Entertainment Weekly) What was so "interesting" about Jen's heels with shorts decision? It was pretty standard fare in fashion mags this spring/summer. She looks chic. -- Anonymous comments on Life Imitates Art: Jen and Vince 'Break Up' Jen's got fabulous gams and I have no problem with her showing them off. Who wouldn't? But I am just not a fan of shorts and heels -- chic or not. Maybe it's the similarity to the Hooters uniform or unwelcome flashbacks to "Roller Boogie." I definitely do my part to keep Marc Jacobs in business and can't go a day without my DailyCandy. Still, when I see photos like this one from Paris fashion week, I think maybe I just don't get chic at all. Is that thing about the hep true? I thought he got tested after Pam got it and accused him of giving it to her, and he...
