Friday List: How to Survive a Horror Flick

Sadly,"The Blair Witch Project's" Heather Donahue didn't have our rules. (AP) Okay, you're being chased by a club-footed vampire zombie with a chainsaw. Your options are to run into the woods, hide in a dark mineshaft or turn and face him with only a fork as a weapon. What do you do, hotshot? What - do - you - do? Since we all cringe every time a "victim" seals his or her fate, surely we're the go-to experts on how to outwit those zombies, maniacal killers, possessed personages and P.O.'d dead janitors, right? Okay then, smartie, share your rules for how to survive a horror film -- as few or as many as you like. I'll start: 1. Don't babysit at homes more than half-an-acre away from another house or busy road. 2. Do not ever, under any circumstance, have sex or engage in any other kind of love-making....

'Lost': Episode 4 Dueling Analyses

With two episodes left in the six-story fall mini-season, washingtonpost.com Movies editor Jen Chaney and I get into it over last night's revelations and reveal where we stand on the great Jack/Sawyer divide. Sawyer (Josh Holloway) -- despite all his rage, he's still just a rat in a cage. (Photo courtesy ABC) Liz: Okay, I'd like to start by personally extending my thanks to J.J. Abrams, Josh Holloway, Bill Duke and the fine citizens of Hawaii for making last night's episode possible because it more than made up for the last couple of weeks of lost momentum (no pun intended). So much rich material -- we had Sawyer with his back up, Kate declaring her love for him (under duress), Jack figuring out another piece of the puzzle, some masterful sadistic manipulation from Ben and a little help triangulating the whereabouts of the Others' prison compound. Okay, first off: Desmond...

For Madonna, It's Oprah Time

When you're alone and life is making you lonely you can always go... downtown. -- Petula Clark When you're surrounded by tabloids and suffocating under the press of the worst PR fiasco in recent memory, you can park your butt on Oprah's couch and hope that O's talent for defusing scandal and transforming bad press into good rubs off on you. A few tears and some tough love may set you on the path to righteous box office numbers (or album/book sales or even possibly get people to stop criticizing an international adoption). Tom Cruise famously jumps Oprah's couch on May 23, 2005. (The Washington Post) That last is a reference to Madonna who, amidst an ever-widening PR nightmare over her adoption of a 13-month-old Malawi boy, will tape an appearance on Oprah today to be aired at 4 p.m. ET tomorrow. I'm going to make a wild prediction: Madonna...

Comment Box: Name Games, 'Lost' Musings and Captain 20

"Hollyweird"? Did you steal that from MSNBC's Joe Scarborough? ;) -- Phil comments on Hollyweird: Jay-Z's Bud, Borat vs. Gypsies and Liza & David Actually, Phil, thanks for asking. This gives me a chance to geek out on my corny propensity for using lame pop culture references for headlines. I borrowed "Hollyweird" from the name of hair band Poison's 2002 attempted comeback album -- chock full of subtly-named songs like "Stupid, Stoned & Dumb" and "Get Ya Some." Hollyweird, incidentally, is also used by a Poison tribute band, coming soon to Bound Brook, N.J. and Woodbridge, Va.! It was also the title of a short-lived 1998 TV show developed for Fox, starring no one of note, but created by one Shaun Cassidy. In this instance, I orignally wanted to go with "Hollywood Babylon" -- title of a legendary book by Kenneth Anger and the name of a song from one...
