Anna Nicole Smith Dead

By Liz Kelly

The Associated Press is reporting that sometime model, actress, diet pill spokesperson and tabloid darling Anna Nicole Smith has died.

News broke late this afternoon that Smith had collapsed at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla. A local fire official said told MSNBC Smith was found unresponsive when rescue workers arrived and was transported to a hospital after being intubated at the scene.

As mentioned in today's Morning Mix, a judge yesterday ordered Anna Nicole to submit to a paternity test for daughter Dannielynn.

A press conference is expected soon an I'll post more details as they become available. Share your reaction in the comments area. Sensitivity is the watchword.

WTOP just reported she's passed away. If it's true, what an odd story. I can't even feel anything about it. Is that bad?

Posted by: DJ | February 8, 2007 3:38 PM | Report abuse

yeah i feel ya. i know i should feel sorry for her but she's just been a trainwrech from day 1. i figured Lindsay Lohan would go first. these things always happen in 3's so who knows?

jeez, i swear i'm not that insensitive! it's just that these people live such crazy lives that its not a surprise when they suddenly die.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 8, 2007 3:48 PM | Report abuse

CNN is saying that she died, based on a "law enforcement source close to the case".

I was not a fan of the woman, but sad nonetheless.

Posted by: Chasmosaur | February 8, 2007 3:49 PM | Report abuse

One way or another, she's left behind an infant whose father is in question.

Posted by: 23112 | February 8, 2007 3:57 PM | Report abuse

The woman IS (was?) a train wreck - but you've got to feel bad that she has a newborn daughter that's now left without a mother...

Posted by: Nicole | February 8, 2007 3:58 PM | Report abuse

Her poor baby. What happens to her now?

It's just very sad.

Posted by: del2001 | February 8, 2007 3:58 PM | Report abuse

OMG, I feel sad for her little daughter.

Posted by: Lisa | February 8, 2007 3:59 PM | Report abuse

I wonder what the heck happened to her. Very sad.

Posted by: NOVA | February 8, 2007 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Both she and her son simply collapsed and died. Coincidence?

I felt bad for her daughter when she was alive!

Four Marines were killed today. THAT is Breaking News, not this!

Posted by: JoeUptown | February 8, 2007 4:04 PM | Report abuse

It's very sad and tragic for that little girl. Considering how drastically her weight fluctuated, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a heart attack or something like that.

Posted by: College Park Gal | February 8, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Man, that's sad. What a mess from beginning to end.

Posted by: h3 | February 8, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

I suspect either suicide or accidental overdose of some sort. Grief from the death of her son, stress from the lawsuit, maybe with some post partum depression mixed in. I didn't like the woman but she deserved better.

Posted by: WMA | February 8, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

joe, get off of your uptown arse and stop reading celeb blogs if it bothers you so much!

Posted by: hey | February 8, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Oh boy. First her son died mysteriously now she dies. One has to wonder whether there's a fatal genetic congenital abnormality which can be exacerbated by drug use which leads to death in young (her son) and relatively young (Anna) in relatives? Sad case.

Posted by: jab | February 8, 2007 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Um, you are reading this, not that... Joe

Posted by: not Joe | February 8, 2007 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Four Marines are killed pretty much every day, Joel. TWANS dies just the once.

Posted by: Suzi | February 8, 2007 4:06 PM | Report abuse

JoeUptown- I agree with you... though you gotta admit its sad for the baby girl.

Posted by: mon | February 8, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully, with 2 men arguing over the paternity, there will be a father who actually wants to care for and raise the baby, rather than just looking for his shot at publicity.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 8, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

We in Sweden just got the news. That a life just so suddenly can be taken away. However, just as someone here sad, when they live so public lives and such crazy lives maybe it´s not so hard ta understand why this things happends...

Posted by: Josephine | February 8, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Who among us will ever forget where we were when we heard the news?

At least Paris Hilton and Jenna Bush still survive! That gives me hope for America.

Posted by: jim jones | February 8, 2007 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have been feeding off and sensationalizing her saga for weeks now. On what I'm guessing has been a daily basis.

And each time I happened to see Anna on these two shows, she appeared to be completely strung out.

If facts reveal that Anna's death was related to drugs, will ET or the Insider be in any way accountable? If not legally, then morally. Did they merely exploit her condition for ratings and otherwise stand silently by?

Posted by: alicia | February 8, 2007 4:10 PM | Report abuse

No matter what her life was like or what she did or didn't do, the fact is that a human lost her life today. So sad for her and her baby.

Posted by: mark | February 8, 2007 4:13 PM | Report abuse

I feel for her daughter. She loses a brother within the first days of her life and now her mom with the paternity test looming. Guess the test does get pushed back again.

Posted by: petal | February 8, 2007 4:13 PM | Report abuse

Supreme Court gave her another shot at $$$$Millions. Then lots of sudden death. And you think the warring fathers care about the fame?

Posted by: cynic | February 8, 2007 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Wow, she really took that Marilyn Monroe redux thing to the limit, eh? But ion all seriousness, that is wierd/sad for her infant daughter...I mean who officially takes custody of her right now, the state? And where was the babers when this went down? Its a damn whodunnit!

...sorry for the insensitivity, but its not like ANS played all high brow or anything.

Posted by: Sarah S | February 8, 2007 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Sure it definitely sucks for the daughter, but she isn't old enough to know what is going on. I bet young women will think twice before going after an old man's money.

Posted by: NOVA | February 8, 2007 4:19 PM | Report abuse

I've got to agree with hey, don't read the page if you're not interested for starters. Secondly, get over it. If a celebrity dies, no one checks with us to see if we care. When celebrities die it is news. Just like there are many who will think, who cares, there may be many who think, who cares about the four dead marines. The president and vice president don't seem too concerned about 3,000 plus Americans dying for their misadventure, so in that context I guess 4 dead marines isn't that big of a deal. I think the article could have given more info. Like, how old was she for starters.

Posted by: glen | February 8, 2007 4:21 PM | Report abuse

At least her daughter might grow up in a better and more stable environment. Maybe even get a better mother to take care of her.

"Anyone suggested that her late husband's son bumped her off?"

I thought he was dead, too?

Posted by: Columbia, MD | February 8, 2007 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Just watching her attempt anything was like staring into the abyss. Her body was a well endowed shell for a soul that was either buried under a mountain of chemicals or gone altogether. Not celebrating the loss of a human life, but as someone said earlier, perhaps her little girl may actually get the kind of care that a little girl deserves. Anna may have loved her children, but appeared clueless as to how to actually raise them.

The parade of vultures coming out of the woodwork to lay claim to whatever she had is going to be vile. Sad.

So now the battle for the $$$$$ will be between his heirs, whoever they may be, and the little 5-month-old daugther of ANS (in reality, her guardian). The whole thing will make Bleak House look like Happy Days before it's over. Lawyers sell their souls for a piece of the action in a case like this.

Posted by: Too bad | February 8, 2007 4:27 PM | Report abuse

Think the litigation is over? Hell, it's just beginning. I smell a products liability suit against the diet drug manufacturer she was endorsing as of late. Each of the rival fathers will be killing each other to get custody of the baby, who is now the sole heir to the judgment she holds to her late husband's estate. What a mess. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, she has succeeded to a whole new level of notoriety. So long as she doesn't join Presley, Monroe and Cobain in the pantheon of dead American talent....

Posted by: dj12 | February 8, 2007 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Mark's comments are spot-on. Why do we even care about somebody who is famous for being famous? I guess this is like passing by a car wreck - you can't help but look. Still, when you think of it, why is this news? I certainly was more saddened by the deaths of the two girls from Montgommery County. That story was important. Not this one.

Posted by: Annandale | February 8, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Hey jimjones....obviously it IS news enough for you to either stay on or keep checking this is more than a bit hypocritical for you to trash others for being interested when you are clearly "interested" enough to be here yourself !

Posted by: Anonymous | February 8, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

I find this highly suspicious! Her son ODs under mysterious circumstances, she and her new smarmy attorney husband refuse a paternity test on the newborn, and now she's dead. If she has the same cause of death as her son, I'd say she was killed. Not by her former husband's kids, her estate would still get the hundereds of millions in inheritance, but by her current husband. Blocking the paternity test might have been motivated to keep the biological father from making a custody claim. Anna's money may follow the child in large part after such a short marriage. The older son in this scenario would have also been killed by her husband, who did attract some suspicion in the case.

Anna looked drugged in her last TV appearance.

Get the lawyer! Seize him!

Always comes to this...
"What about the children??!!??!!" (Nicole Brown Simpson, Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith, Marvin Gaye, Christina Onasis...).

If her management team was everything they should be and her family is as supportive as they could be, that little girl will be just fine.

Whatever mess her personal life was, every once in a while she hit a high note: a whole slew of BEAUTIFUL Guess Jeans ads (for a minute, it was like Marilyn was gracing the pages again).

She was one of the ones I hated to love.

Man, I can't believe how cold so many of you are! Ok, she didn't live a life that most of you would find honorable but it wasn't illegal and it didn't cost any of you a dime! The fact you all know who Anna Nicole-Smith is and how she lived her life is evidence that a lot of people found her life news worthy.

How many of you have taken your natural gifts and made a good living with them? Anna Nicole-Smith came from nothing. Her assets being her good looks and an ability to get strangers, mostly men, to do things for her. Do I agree with this? NO! Is it any of my business? NO! Am I obligated to pay money to watch her show? NO! Did I like her? Maybe. She certainly wasn't a parasite on society but we Americans do celebrate societal parasites.

Say what you please, the woman's undergone enormous stress in the past few years-- from legal battles to suddenly losing a LOT of weight to having a baby to losing her son, then the paternity issues, being forced out of a home in the Bahamas and... well, I think that kind of pressure might make anyone collapse.
I'm very sorry to hear of her passing. I never thought she was the sharpest knife in the drawer or the best actress/entertainer, but she WAS entertaining and deserved many more years on the planet. With luck, she might even have turned things around-- I like to think so.
Rest in peace, Vickie Lynn Marshall.

I am curious as to why "Annandale" find the reports about the Montgomey County girls more important? ...because it was likely suicide? (ANS may have been to...we do not know). Because one of the girls suffered from depression? (So did ANS; post-partum as well as having just lost a son). Because (possibly) the girls were being harassed for (possibly) being gay? (ANS was continually made fun of for being everything from a buxom woman to a dumb blonde to a white trash golddigger). Because the gils were only teenagers and had a whole life ahead of them? (ANS was only 39...she had a pretty long life ahead of her too, plus a brand new daughter to watch grow)......Who are you to decide that some people's life -- or death -- are more "important"?

Dear Mark, I am NOT "more concerned about 4 dead marines"...and I come from a Marine family. Concerned, yes, but "More" concerned, no...I believe all life is equally worthwhile, to be celebrated and mourned. If that is your version of a "foolish American", so be it. It is my version of a Christian, and that set of laws (and leader) takes far greater precedence in my life than any nation-state of this world.

And since you asked (though I note YOU didn't answer) I voted for Al Gore in 2000 and Wesley Clark (via a write-in)in 2004. And I do a WHOLE lot more than "write" to my Congesspeople. I visit them. And I take action.

Presumably, like most of you, I never met Ms Smith. All I saw was a media projection. Her existence and impact on my life compares no differently than the grocery bagger at the supermarket or the mother of Betty Appiah. I'm no fan of death, even for the evil. As for those I don't know, death seems like a burden on those that knew them (at least is has been for me), but for the emotionally attached it seems to remind us of our own mortality and relative significance in a ever expanding world.

A woman strips in a bar for a living, and cages $ from drunk rubes. "Marries" an ancient man for 15 months and suckerpunches him and his heirs for his mega fortune, litigating in court for a decade, up to the US Supreme Ct. - talk about misuse of hallowed institutions. (Either he was senile, or decided to hurt his own family by giving it all to her in a sham marriage: either way, she had no business taking the $).

Becomes a Marilyn wannabe, Playboy poseur, and plastic surgery addict, going on tv w/ a remarkable, new low-in-bad-taste show. Peddles dangerous diet pills to unsuspecting girls who know no better.

"Parents" her son such that he's on methadone (heroin) and antidepressants: he overdoses and dies.

Decides to have another child, out of wedlock, and isn't into the father enough to name him: might have to pay him inheritance/suppport? (guess you know that game, huh?) The sight of that newborn with her erzatz mother is to look at future misery for the child.

Overdoses herself at 39, after yet more plastic surgery. Dies an ugly death, having lived an ugly, using-everyone-and-everything life at every turn.

Because she is dead, it's a tragedy? Not every death is such: to waste your short time on the sphere being a first class nothing is the tragedy.

She debased everything worthwhile and represented much that was bad in modern life.

Posted by: Bonehead | February 8, 2007 5:24 PM | Report abuse

I think this is really pretty sad--she had a fairly screwed up life, but by all accounts I've read, she tried to be a good mom to her son, and didn't seem to do anyone any harm.

Bonehead, as for you--what did ANS do to you to make you have such venom. And to clarify a few things for you: she met her husband when he went to see her strip. He liked her. Maybe he was senile, maybe not, but she sure seemed to make him happy. Hard to see how she "suckerpunched" him. As for his family members, I think the only one who fought with ANS was Pierce--at least one of the other sons joined ANS against Pierce.

Taking litigation to the Sup. Ct. isn't a "misuse" of that hallowed institution. They get to pick what cases they take, and they took this one because it was an issue (state v. federal courts for this type of lawsuit) that hadn't been addressed.

I'm sure you're also aware that some kids will use drugs even with the best, most attentive parents. (Not saying that ANS was, but how do you know she wasn't?) Blaming his drug use--as an adult!--on her is lame.

You also don't know that she overdosed, unless you managed to get that autopsy in before the county did.

And you spelled "ersatz" wrong.

Is it venonmous to factually posit immorality is not cricket, or is this, too, debatable? Aren't you just arguing for the sake of taking an opposite opinion? Are you merely upset that someone doesn't take the standard tact that a death is per se always sad?

A gerbil has feeling for its child: how do you know Smith was a good mother: it's not what you feel; it's what you do. Parading her son on that TV show was debasing and wrong: a little mothering might have revealed his problems.

Of course she overdosed: she was 39. If she died from a heart attack, it was from diet pills. Either way, it was mis-spent.

This woman was indefensible and so is your untethered opinion. Don't disagree to disagree. Don't argue about a mispelling.

Bonehead (you are aptly named):

"to factually posit immorality is not cricket"--I don't know what you're talking about.

"Aren't you just arguing for the sake of taking an opposite opinion?" No. Posting on a blog.

"Are you merely upset that someone doesn't take the standard tact that a death is per se always sad?" No. I don't think it's always sad when someone dies. I think this one was sad.

"A gerbil has feeling for its child" This is news to me.

"This woman was indefensible and so is your untethered opinion." My untethered opinion. To what should I be tethering my opinions from now on?

"Don't argue about a mispelling." You misspelled "misspelling."

But, man oh man, you guys are cold! I doubt there was anything fishy here...probably a combination of drugs/alcohol, post partum depression (did anyone see the video of her cesarean on youtube...scary, the anesthesia didn't work) and just grief over her son's death. but then again, reports are saying she had a fever and felt fluish before her death...some are saying it was a lingering infection from the cesarean 5 months ago!

How about a little caring here? So maybe there were a lot of things that Anna Nicole failed to excell at. But at least she had a spirit of keeping on trying. She didn't go crawl in a hole just because the world was always thing she'd made a fool of herself. And I admired her for that. I'm really saddened now.

No matter what others say or act Anna was way to young to pass away and having a daughter makes matters worst I wish her love ones my best wishes and pray for her child well being ,bye my friend you was always a star to me!

If the baby now dies of a methadone overdose, I will really cry foul. Is Howard on the run already? He's strange! I think he did it!

Get the lawyer! Seize him!

P.S. About being cold, I can't feel sorry for someone I don't know. It is too abstract. Maybe if I saw a touching documentary on her life.

I feel really sad that this is the way it ended for Anna Nicole. And what a way this is for her poor little baby daughter to begin her life surrounded by so much tragedy!

I'm with JoeUptown. Although I'm online in Australia reading about Anna Nicole (so sad for her daughter and the loss of Anna's life) there are so many other important things happening in the world RIGHT NOW! Maybe we should all give a thought for those other poor souls right now....

This is a waste of time and ink.

White trash mother. White trash death.

Northerner: Really, you are SO callous. I have feelings too you know. There is no spellcheck here and I try to use these big words and well, boo hoo.

You're untethered to fact, morality and suck off the teet of emotion.

OK, we get it. Some people like to visit a board dedicated to comparatively lightweight subjects, pound their chests and proclaim other things are More Important and the lightweight stuff is not Real News. Fine.

Is there anyone here who claimed this particular death was the story of the century? No? Then please stop smacking around straw men.

Bonehead can't even spell the little words.

It's "teat".

I don't think that Anna Nicole's death was really a surprise to anyone who followed the story of her bizarre life. The one thing that really bothers me most about what has happened is -- why didn't that dweeb so called "husband" of hers love her enough to try and get her to seek treatment for her drug addiction? He just seems absolutely, completely useless in the scope of things. Just like her son - why didn't Anna Nicole try and get help for him. Two perfect examples of wasted human lives. Now the precious, helpless little baby girl will grow up never knowing her mother or step-brother, and at this point may not even know who her real father is either. Let's hope she doesn't follow in the footsteps of her mother. Rest in peace, Anna Nicole. I hope you find the happiness in heaven that you never found on earth.

Her late husband's son is dead, but the news is saying both sides will still be fighting the battle (I don't know who those people will be). If Larry Birkhead is declared the father, he'd probably go after the money "in the name of the baby". I must say, it did catch me off guard to find Ms. Smith was gone, but it wasn't exactly shocking considering how she led her life. Even her mother said she was abusing alcohol and drugs.

I think it is really cruel and uncalled for that people are trying to blame Howard Stern for Anna and Daniel's death simply because he was a part of their life. He was the only thing stable in her life and he loved her so much. Why aren't people on Larry's case? He's a well known playboy humping snake in LA and yet people bash a man that stood by Anna for over 20 years! Outrageous. So if someone is with me when I die it is suddenly their fault? I am an adult and I'm responsible for how I care for myself. I also think it stinks that some of the media are blaming Howard and yet they have blood on their hands from Anna dying cause they constantly harass her and talk about her incessantly!!

I feel very sad over this entire tragic event... for Anna; her son; and little baby.

I am sickened too, by how Entertainment Tonight exploited this woman during her lowest of low times, and all for profit.

They pushed Anna in a corner too, in that she had no choice but to come on for a couple of interviews to try and defend herself, but she should not have had to, during such a tragic time in her life.

Same goes for Anna's mother, who was speaking out against her own flesh and blood daughter during the death of Anna's son. The mother was also sensationalizing for profit, and off of her own daughter. It doesn't matter they were estranged from each other and had a difficult relationship... for God's sake, it was still her daughter!

When I first saw Anna Nicole hounded after the death of her son, I told my husband that if the media did not leave Anna alone for a time to grieve her sons death, she would most likely die from all the stress, and sure enough it happened.

Personally, as a medical professional myself, I feel Anna's heart just gave out.
Why? Because for one thing, she had 3 or 4 law suits going on at the time. Secondly, she was taking diet pills for a couple of years to lose weight, which also strains the heart. Then she had a late age pregnancy, with all the fluctuating hormones, which also puts a strain on ones heart. While her body was dealing with all of this, she then lost her son, which was a tremendous amount of stress to deal with, on top of all the other stuff. She also suffered a collapsed lung after the birth of her child, and was on prescription drugs for recent flu complaints, as well as anti-depressants. MY GOD! it is unbelievable how much strain her physical body and mental psyche was under. It is no wonder she collapsed.

Don't forget too, all the different emotions she endured from mostly downs, to a couple ups with her baby being born, and a recent ceremonial wedding. How does one deal with such conflicting emotions running rampent at the same time?

For all the people who laugh at her and put her down, I say shame on you all! There will come a judgement day for all of you, in which you will have to account for your attitude towards others, especially the underdogs of the world.

No matter what kind of lifestyle this woman lived, it is none of anyones JUDGEMENTAL business! And she obviously endured more pain and suffering in the past 2 or 3 years of her short life, then most people experience in a long life time!

I pray daily for her little baby, for I fear the hedious media hounds are going to make a 3 ring circus out of this poor precious childs life. What chance will this baby have for a normal life? I can only hope and pray God will protect her from the evil ones in this world.

I have cried for Anna Nicole Smith, and still continue to pray for her, for none of us really knows what lies beyond this life, or the mercy that may be given to one who lived a life of hell, despite their flaws in poor judgement out of lonliness while living on this planet.

Besides, he without sin, cast the first stone!

And once again, shame on Entertainment Tonight, and Zsa Zsa's sick husband and others who couldn't wait to exploit this poor woman after her death! I noticed Zsa Zsa's husband said nothing while Anna was still alive, because HE IS AN OBVIOUS LIAR!

I am just sick about all of this, and for those who commented above about the death of our soldiers being more important news, I disagree. I stand by our soldiers, and pray for them too, but feeling compassion for another person such as Anna, does not equate for lack of concern over our soldiers. Some of us know how to be concerned over many things, and many people at the same time. Besides, the soldiers signed up for combat, Anna did not, yet she suffered wounds from a personal war herself.

And Anna was right, when she stated she did not understand how people could kick her when she was down. Many evil people in this world do just that! Mostly media people, but others do as well. IT IS JUST SICK! THEY ARE NO BETTER THEN DAMN DIRTY TERRORISTS... THEIR JUST IN A DIFFERENT

Just one more comment:

Not necessarily on this forum, but on others and in the media, I have heard people state Anna Nicole Smith was not a
legitimate actress?

How so? She did act in a few movies, and
even if an actress is in only one movie, they are considered a legit actress.

The same goes for a writer; photographer etc. If one publishes even one book or article, whatever... they are referred to as authors. If one publishes even one photograph and makes money off of it, they are deemed a legit photographer, and the list goes on.

For all those who only refer to Anna as being a Playboy Bunny, and Topless dancer, and do not refer to her as having also been an actress, then again.... I SAY SHAME ON YOU, AND PARDON YOU FOR YOUR 'DELIBERATE' IGNORANCE. Your lack of recognizing her as an actress, is just another sny way of insulting her on purpose. Even after her death, you mock her in an indirect manner!

I am not on here to argue with anyone about their comments... everyone has that right... My thoughts are just this.... If Howard loved her so much, why didnt he see what the world saw... she simply needed a loving person to help her to get help! He failed her in that. The baby needs to be with someone responsible and someone who will love her, and not be in it for the money... simple... R.I.P. Anna, doubt that with the way it is still getting more and more tangled up with so many wanting attention in one way or another.... Beach:)
