Guilty Pleasure: Movies to Watch Again and Again

(Image courtesy Paramount Pictures) The first time I saw "Airplane" it was projected on the wall of my family's villa in Italy. I was maybe nine years old and thought an inflatable autopilot, a guy who spilled drinks down his face and, well, feces hitting a fan was hi-larious. As I matured, I found new nuances to delight me in "Airplane" -- the teen me felt smug recognizing cameos from Barbara Billingsley, Kareem Abdul Jabar and a young Joe Izuzu (David Leisure). As an adult, I snicker at the subtle (and not so subtle) dialogue and I have finally come to appreciate Julie Hagerty. I've also been known to fast forward through the DVD to hear the lines from Stephen Stucker's Johnny ("I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl.") "Airplane" is just one of the movies contained in a box I keep close at hand....

Lost Dueling Analyses: Death to Poochie(s)

washingtonpost.com movies editrix Jen Chaney and I overanalyze last night's episode of "Lost." Warning: There are spoilers. Buh-bye Nikki (Kiele Sanchez) and Paolo (Rodrigo Santoro). (Photo courtesy ABC) Jen: I never thought I'd say this, but I actually enjoyed the Nikki/Paolo episode. Okay, so the twist ending was basically stolen from an episode of either "The Twilight Zone," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Amazing Stories" or all of the above. Still, it was nice to have a new mini-mystery to distract from the larger mysteries. I also thought it was interesting to follow the Locke episode with another installment about paralysis. What did you think? Liz: I'm out of sorts because last night played like one big wet desperate Valentine to longtime fans who despised the bungled addition of Nikki and Paolo (AKA the Poochies). The execution (no pun intended) was manic -- part "Scooby Doo," part "Murder She Wrote," part Edgar...

The World According to Gwyneth

The very model of a modern major actress? Gwyneth Paltrow in 'Emma.' (AP) Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have an uncanny talent for opening her mouth and instantly alienating some sector of the population, if not all of humanity. Last year, Paltrow danced dangerously close to "against us" territory when she was quoted as observing that Brits make wittier dinner companions than Americans. Though she later said she's durn proud to be an American and blamed her rudimentary Spanish for any misunderstanding, she did observe that Europe's older culture is a distinctly different place where people "work to live." Earlier this month, Paltrow -- married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin and mother to two children, one of whom she named "Apple" in all earnestness -- described herself as a "housewife" (and dormant artist) and deigned to give us a little insight to her kids' playdates with the children of Madonna...

Celebritology 101: The Art of the Blind Item

Which pop diva makes her friend go out undercover to get fried chicken so her mom doesn't find out? Which pop megastar celebrated his visit to NYC last week with an east Village go-go dancer and gay-for-pay rent boy? "He was fat, completely hairless and doesn't really like being touched," says the young gentleman. Which starlet amuses friends by carting her cocaine around town in a simply darling little Hello Kitty change purse? Sometimes there is no more satisfying read than the questionable, and often ridiculously sublime, blind item. As in the examples above, the blind item -- long a staple of gossip columnists hoping to avoid messy litigation or add a little spice to an otherwise slow news day -- hits that irresistible sweet spot between salacious hearsay and our desire to fill in the blanks. Of course, here at Celebritology we would never engage in blind item generation...

Comment Box: Britney's Promise, Sanjaya's Future

Any idea of the cred of the rehab facility Britney was in? I think it's called Promises? She leaves after 26 days -- usual stint is 30 or 45. -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live chat Promises has been in business for 18 years and the facility's Web site boasts that celebrities, grandparents and heads of state looking to get clean have all chosen them for treatment. And, in fact, previous alums include Charlie Sheen and Ben Affleck. While I can't seem to find any mention about length of stay on the site, prospective clients can peruse a Web gallery featuring pix of the oceanfront property, activities like horseback riding and orchid blossoms placed serenely on beds. The facility reportedly runs $1,600 a night and most clients stay a minimum of 30 days. Maybe Tom Cruise should check himself into rehab, the celeb fashion of the moment. Oh, wait....
