The World According to Gwyneth
Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have an uncanny talent for opening her mouth and instantly alienating some sector of the population, if not all of humanity. Last year, Paltrow danced dangerously close to "against us" territory when she was quoted as observing that Brits make wittier dinner companions than Americans. Though she later said she's durn proud to be an American and blamed her rudimentary Spanish for any misunderstanding, she did observe that Europe's older culture is a distinctly different place where people "work to live."
Earlier this month, Paltrow -- married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin and mother to two children, one of whom she named "Apple" in all earnestness -- described herself as a "housewife" (and dormant artist) and deigned to give us a little insight to her kids' playdates with the children of Madonna and Stella McCartney: "...we leave them in bed and stay to drink a glass of wine."
Despite the occasional glass of wine with Madge and Stella while the kids are somehow magically confined to bed (perhaps they are riveted by a DVD showing of "View from the Top"?) Paltrow recently pronounced that she thinks women should limit alcohol consumption: "I think it's gross! I really don't like drunk women, it's such a bad look."
And who can forget what may be the Oscar-winning actress's greatest hit, when describing her career trajectory: "I think part of the downside of being so successful and reaching sort of the pinnacle of everything when you're 26 years old is that I kind of became insouciant about things that I chose."
Here's to Gwyneth Paltrow, who doesn't need cocktails to be a walking PR nightmare.
