Weekend Read: 'Tabloid Prodigy'

(Running Press) Timing is everything and for Marlise Elizabeth Kast, May 2 turned out to be a propitious day to have an item about Tobey Maguire run in the New York Post. The release of Kast's book, which included a juicy tidbit about the time she'd been assigned to investigate rumors that Maguire and close friend Leonardo DiCaprio were once lovers, was picked up by Page Six just two days before the U.S. release of "Spider-Man 3." This week, I exchanged e-mails with Kast to talk about her book, "Tabloid Prodigy" -- her account of years spent as an undercover infiltrator of the Hollywood scene and her own growing internal struggle to reconcile her career with her own moral code. Read on to find out how far Kast went to get her stories, why she thinks celebs need the tabloids and which story she wishes she could take back......

"Lost" Dueling Analyses: The Man Behind the Curtain

Washingtonpost.com movies editrix Jen Chaney and I attempt to make sense of a particularly enigmatic episode. Warning: Spoilers ahead... Man-child Ben Linus. (Photo courtesy ABC) Liz: So little Ben Linus, like Walt, was a special kid -- capable of seeing and feeling things that others did not. And that made all the difference in last night's whiplash-inducing episode. Is Jacob real or the manifestation of Ben's unhappy childhood? Why would he say "help me?" Does Richard Alpert not age? Is Locke down for the count? I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. Jen, help us out here. Jen: Ah, Liz, you have just touched on the detail that led to my little "Lost" epiphany last night. Climb aboard with me now as we travel through my Theory That Explains "Lost." (Sort of.) I believe you are quite right about Richard not aging (told you his eyebrows held secrets). Not only...

Fashion Victim: Mary-Kate Olsen

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Mary-Kate Olsen in a goth feather duster. (Getty Images) Hey Cate Blanchett and Kirsten Dunst (see Morning Mix), you're not the only ones who can rock the Costume Institute red carpet with a really gnarly ensemble! Behold Mary-Kate Olsen, who had Big Bird's carcass dyed special for the occasion, then crawled into it for warmth. Not content to confine her animalistic urges to ornithological inspiration, this New York Times-dubbed "fashion star" also recently stepped out in this belted leopard print drapery panel to celebrate Kate Moss's new fashion line (check out the shoes, too). Entertain yourself for minutes on end with Mary-Kate and Ashley's greatest fashion hits....

Comment Box: Elia Kazan, Go Ahead and Watch

Martin Scorsese looks on as director Elia Kazan brandishes his lifetime achievement Oscar. (AP) "A Face in the Crowd" is a[n] Elia Kazan flick. We still blackballing him, or can I watch this now? -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live discussion You're referring, of course, to the director's 1952 testimony to Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in which Kazan named eight of his old friends as members of the Communist Party. Though Kazan later argued that the names were already known to the committee, he was thereafter dropped by many former friends and colleagues and made the target of a "reverse blacklist" that (some argue) limited his exposure and his career. In 1999 Martin Scorcese and Robert DeNiro led Kazan on stage to receive a lifetime achievement Oscar to the applause of stars like Karl Malden and Vanessa Redgrave (though some, like Ed Begley, Jr. and...

Celebritology Clip n' Save: Paris's Prison Primer

A subdued Paris Hilton leaves the Los Angeles Municipal Court Metropolitan branch Friday. (AP) Late Friday afternoon, when most of us law-abiding types were turning our attention to happy hours or "Spider-Man 3," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer earned himself a life-long berth in Celebritology history by sentencing one Paris Whitney Hilton to spend 45 days in county jail as punishment for violating her probation. Hilton is ordered to report to the Century Regional Detentional Facility in Lynwood, Calif. on June 5, where she will -- we assume -- find out how simple (try three squares and an in-cell latrine) life can actually get. To help Paris through her 45-day exile, amateur celebrity correctional consultant Lisa Todorovich and I offer a few survival tips: 1. Pre-planning prevents poor performance: Review this comprehensive list of chicks-in-prison-flicks for cues from Pam Grier, Tanya Roberts and Wendy O. Williams...
