Friday List: The Best Soundtracks

(Courtesy Fontana London) The gunna-gunk gunna-gunk, gunna-gunk gunna-gunk first few riffs from Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" instantly conjures up visions of the interior of Mike Damone's car in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and I'm similarly transported by songs from the other varied soundtracks taking up space on my iPod. Songs from movies like "Jesus' Son" and "Rize" share space with pre-adolescent favorites like "Camelot," "Xanadu" and my first know-it-all-by-heart soundtrack, "Grease." Hip or cheesy, loaded with subtext or unapologetically meaningless, movie soundtracks are often entry points into a genre and I have many directors I'd like to thank for sparking lifelong love affairs with artists like Cat Stevens and Mudhoney. Today's mission is to list our favorite movie soundtracks. You'll receive bonus points for including your reasons. As usual, I'll start: "Donnie Darko" -- Sadly, the official soundtrack only included the original score, so I had to craft my...

'Lost' Dueling Analyses: Greatest Hits

washingtonpost.com movies editrix Jen Chaney and I overanalyze ABC's little freakshow for the second-to-last time in 2007 and have an epiphany of sorts. Warning: Spoilers ahead. Missing from last night's episode: John Locke (Terry O'Quinn). (Photo courtesy ABC) Liz: Since our purpose here is analysis, I think we need to start by acknowledging that last night's episode didn't provide us with much fodder for discussion. It was a good episode. Not great, but good. In some ways it reminded me of the Death to Poochies episode in that it seemed designed to pay off loyal viewers who have long griped about things like the absence of Rose and Bernard (they're back!) and the whereabouts of Vincent (he's back!) and Jack's backbone (it's back!). The rest of it was one long Valentine to Charlie. By the time we reached No. 1 on his "Greatist Hits" list, I was ready for some...

The Smart Set

Oprah Winfrey gets into her Howard University commencement address. (AP) Ah, spring. Strappy sandals come out of hiding, Adrian Higgins perks up, and a corny-copia of rubber-chicken circuit regulars, politicians, people with inscrutable job titles and, inevitably, a handful of celebs, descend on academia to deliver this year's spate of commencement addresses at the nation's universities. The topic of big name graduation speakers came up in last week's Celebritology Live discussion and I was heartened to learn that many other college graduates did not have to sit through an interminable lecture from (then) Virginia governor George Allen on their big days. (Neither did I, actually. I skipped it in favor of nursing a hangover.) Jon Stewart returned to his alma mater, William & Mary, in 2004 to warn graduates to "aim low" and "love what you do." This year, out of the 684 commencement speakers listed by the Chronicle...

Where in the World is Jayden James?

(Jeremy Norman for washingtonpost.com) Hey Y'all. What with all the head-shaving and fishnetting, one can easily forget that Britney Spears is also the mother of two tykes: Sean Preston (SPF) and Jayden James. SPF scored primo PR last year with a couple of tabloid stories about mom's bad parenting: There was the cracked skull mishap resulting in a visit from child services and the infamous lap-driving incident (they're so "country"!). And, recently, SPF has been seen making the scene with mom at L.A.'s Millennium Dance Studio, where she's busily hatching her plan to bring the sexy back. But the astute observer of celebrity domestication may have noticed that something is missing from this family portrait: Spears's eight-month-old son Jayden James. Not since the months-long wait for the first pictures of little Suri Cruise or Anna Nicole Smith's first marriage has so much ink been expended on someone who wears...

Comment Box: Kirk Cameron on 'Nightline'?

Kirk Cameron, not one to be left behind in the debate of God's existence. (AP) Kirk Cameron on "Nightline" what? I had such a thing for him back in the day and now he just creeps me out. -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live discussion That's right, the actor who earned his berth in our pop culture lexicon by playing the son of Alan Thicke on super-sappy '80s sitcom "Growing Pains" (watch online) is all grown-up: The "atheist turned follower of Christ" and father of six plays a starring role in the "Left Behind" series of evangelical movies and produces and co-hosts "The Way of the Master" -- a reality TV show aimed at "saving" as many people as possible by inspiring Christians to "reach out to the lost." Last Wednesday, Cameron and "Way of the Master" co-host Ray Comfort appeared on Nightline to "face-off" against two atheists...
