Friday Lists: For Your Consideration

This Friday, three lists currently making the rounds of pop culture sites and e-mail boxes are summarized below: 25 Movies with Real Impact In their ongoing series of 25th-anniversary lists, the USA Today staff has compiled a list of the most important movie moments from the last quarter-century. I'm on board with the list-topping "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but "The Cable Guy," "Total Recall" and -- I kid you not -- "The Bodyguard?" 100 Days That Changed Music Blender magazine says that without these 25 watershed musical moments, we'd have "no mp3s, no LSD, no hip-hop, no soul-sucking corporate rock." Everything from January 31, 1955 (RCA demonstrates the first synthesizer) to November 16, 1985 (the day Starship's "We Built This City" reached No. 1). Don't worry -- this comprehensive list includes "Pet Sounds," the iPod, the Sex Pistols and the Sugarhill Gang. I think we approve. Springfield's Best Kudos...

From the Desk of Britney Spears

The over-communicative Britney Spears. (AP) What better way to spend a slow post-pyrotechnic workday than pondering the latest message from the disjointed mind of Britney Spears? We've had much fun at the expense of her brain droppings in the past -- translating her free-form poetry and even enlisting an expert to draw conclusions about her aberrant personality from her words and actions. Today though, as we nurse hot dog hangovers and begin the long countdown to Labor Day, we are allowed the lazy indulgence of simple catty disbelief. As in, what the heck is this woman talking about now? As reported in this morning's Mix, Brit sent a hand-written note to paparazzi agency X17 on Tuesday, reading: Dear X17, I want to apologize for the past incedent with the umbrella. I was preparing a character for a possible movie role where the husband doesn't play his part so they...

Catching Up with Tony Danza

Tony Danza. (Photo courtesy PBS) From "Taxi" to "Who's the Boss" to his own talk show, Tony Danza is an American TV institution. So it's only fitting that this Italian-American actor -- who considers himself the embodiment of the American Dream -- host Wednesday's Capitol Fourth Independence Day celebration, to be broadcast live on PBS tomorrow night starting at 8 p.m. ET. This year's show will kick off with a Danza-led dance number feting patriotic songs and include performances from Little Richard, Elliott Yamin, "Heroes" co-star Hayden Panettiere and former "Cheers" regular Bebe Neuwirth. Despite his excitement about the show, Danza admits that the war in Iraq is never far from his mind. "It's really hard at a time of war, I think, to celebrate," Danza said on the phone from New York last Thursday. "That's my only problem. I have a heavy heart. I can't imagine what it's...

An Ode to Lindsay Lohan on the Occasion of her 21st Birthday

Birthday girl Lindsay Lohan. (AP) On starlet birthdays, though you may not know it The Celebritologist Becomes a poet. Who do we honor? Let me explain: She sings, she acts, She drives on cocaine. That's right, Lindsay Lohan, Rehab darling du jour, Turns today twenty-one And is sober, we're sure. A paparazzi target Who parties real hard, She's left Disney for "Mean Girls," And earned that SAG card. But with mom a floozy And dad an ex-con, Lindsay's made a habit Of carousing till dawn. So a little advice For this most jolly of days: Keep your promise -- don't drink And renounce girl deejays. And for just a while Avoid those old haunts, Goodbye to the Ivy And to Chateau Marmont. Let's see a new LL Without coke and scotch And show the world You're more than a [Editor's Note: Liz can't use that excellent rhyme here. This...
