Friday List: DIY Talking Keychains

(Courtesy fredflare.com) Who can resist the charm of a talking keychain? Not I, the owner of both Mr. T and Napoleon Dynamite keychains that regularly figure into my conversations by interjecting random phrases like: "I pity the fools" and "Lucky!" Both were gifts from Mr. Liz (who must be saving the jewelry for some future birthday or anniversary). This morning, though, as I pondered waking him up by blasting "Can you bring me my chapstick" right in his ear, I started to wonder... if I could design a talking keychain based on a movie or TV character, who would it be and what would it say? As expected, the talking keychain market is awash with some of pop culture's most quotable characters -- from "Lord of the Rings'" Gollum ("My precious.") to Scarface ("Say hello to my little friend.") to "The Office" ("Ooo. Discipline. Kinky."). There's even an Andy...

Highbrow: Checking in With the Cognoscenti

(Joe Hadley for washingtonpost.com) Today we christen a new feature, Highbrow, which will take a somewhat regular look at the world beyond (dare I say "above") the tabloids and paparazzi-driven blogs we normally frequent here in Celebritology (though, we do love them). From our own Style, Op-ed and Outlook sections to sister pubs like Slate and Newsweek and trusted tastemakers Salon, The New York Review of Books and the U.K.'s Guardian, Highbrow hopes to provide you with a little more meat for your daily diet of celebrity culture. Featured: Brand It Like Beckham Slate.com Slate's latest Primary Source document is a six-page ad agency storyboard detailing plans to promote David Beckham's arrival on ESPN, set to the Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye." Best line: "Cut to a middle-aged Spanish woman at a newsstand in Madrid, crying as she reads tabloid articles about Beckham's move. Mascara runs down her cheeks." Beyond the...

Join the 'Lost' Book Club

(Image courtesy Scribner) Jen: Ever since our dear Charlie made the sign of the cross and floated off into the deep blue sea during the season finale of "Lost," Liz and I have been adrift. With no "Lost" in our lives, we have turned to DVDs of previous episodes; futile Google searches for news, any news, about the show; and, on at least one occasion, hard liquor. Liz: The hard liquor was, of course, after Jen gave birth. And it wasn't Dharma brand, so it was really a hollow kind of high. Jen: Fortunately, we have now come up with a way to continue feeding our (and your) "Lost" obsession during the long hiatus until the show returns in February. We call it: "Lost" Book Club. On the first Wednesday of each month, Liz and I will announce the "Lost" Book Club selection of the month in a post...

Daniel Radcliffe Conjures Up an Adult Image

Emma Watson reacts to co-star Daniel Radcliffe's Details spread. (AP) We spend a fair amount of time here handwringing about the overt sexuality of starlets. Today's Miley Cyrus is tomorrow's Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Fergie, Elizabeth Berkley, etc. One day it's all pigtails and formulaic TV capers and the next its bustiers, plaid minis and kissing Madonna on stage at the MTV awards. It's tough territory for a parent to negotiate. Kid-safe entertainment fare is -- in its best form -- a respite from a world of nine-year-olds with cell phones, 11-year-olds with boyfriends and 13-year-olds with midriff-baring Abercrombie ensembles. Much ink has been spilled pondering how to square on-air "G" ratings with young female stars quickly growing into PG-13 and even R-rated real lives. But what about the boys? We don't usually worry about them. Like the Disney Channel's Zach and Cody, they live the sweet life. We...
