Insta-Poll: Britney's VMA Performance?

By Liz Kelly

Britney Spears opened Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards with a performance touted as the opening salvo of her "comeback." But despite early buzz about a stage show including illusions courtesy of Criss Angel, Brit's rendition of her new single "Gimme More" was confined to song and dance, with the only mystery remaining the lack of surprises. (Vote below.)

Where's the option for "That was just plain sad. Orphaned puppies sitting out in the rain feel sorry for Britney at this point."?

Posted by: DJ | September 9, 2007 10:12 PM | Report abuse

while I'll admit that she pulled it off better than I ever could, I think the outfit was a bad choice. As for her performance, she looked drugged - almost as if she was moving in slow motion. Really strange.

Posted by: nevada | September 9, 2007 10:23 PM | Report abuse

She seemed SO tired and counting each move in her head, clomping across the stage, and doing weak arm movements. It really seems like whoever pushed her to perform now was wrong. And the clip in hair extensions were horrendous. Please Brit you have plenty of $ to take a long vacation and get it together, its not as if you'd be forgotten.

I'd like to conduct an online insta-poll myself: vote if you NEVER want to read one more syllable about 'Britney' again in your entire life--ever.

She's retired. Maybe she doesn't know it yet, but she's retired. Her time is up. And I'm tired. Of seeing yet one more headline about 'Britney'. Who freaking cares???? Let her act the fool and spend her loot in splendid anonymity. There are lots of really talented performers who deserve attention. She does not.

Posted by: cody mccall | September 9, 2007 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Well, her butt is covered and her fishnets appear to be without holes. In Britland, that counts as improvement.

Posted by: ep | September 9, 2007 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Sure, there are plenty of performers with more talent, but how many performers have more celebrity? If the blog were Talentology, we could get rid of her...but I think Britney is here to stay!

Posted by: h3 | September 9, 2007 11:11 PM | Report abuse

The backup dancers put far more effort into that performance than Britney did. Boring song and a forgettable performance.

Posted by: Tirade | September 9, 2007 11:56 PM | Report abuse

Okay, that was just sad and pathetic.
Her dancing was stiff and ineffective, her costume was inappropriate for a woman that thick in the middle (compare her figure with those of her dancers, in the photo above), and her hair looked as though the stylist was a beauty school dropout.
Unless "comeback" is a new synonym for "over-hyped disappointment," Britney is finished.

Posted by: MisterBear | September 10, 2007 12:00 AM | Report abuse

That night could have jump started her comeback, the song was definitely catchy enough. Instead she chose not to take advantage of the enormous free publicity and give what has to be the most lackluster performance of her career.

It's clear her heart just isn't in it anymore. She's burnt out. She's over.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward | September 10, 2007 12:07 AM | Report abuse

Also: I hesitate to cast stones at her belly, 'cause I'm not so hot in a bikini these days myself, but...I'm not performing on national TV. I second the suggestion that she take a nice long vacation. Please, Britney. For everyone's sake.

i dunno what happened, but i know that something did. what happened to Cris Angel? And that Sarah woman was unjustifiably cruel.

I think, that despite whatever happened backstage -mtv asking her to change her performance at the last sec/overhearing Sarah talk about her kids- for her to still perform and not back out - was brave.

i think it shows she's strong. I couldnt do it.

I also think it wasnt THAT bad. For her claibre -yeah it was - but it wasnt that awful. Give her a chance - after everything shes been through - just performing is HUGE.

Go Brit

The last time I saw a woman who looked like that, she was leaving the stage in the middle of her set to fight with one of the other strippers.

Posted by: byoolin | September 10, 2007 8:02 AM | Report abuse

Well, I am seven months pregnant and I think I could move better than her. :)

But I do feel for her she's had a rough year.

Posted by: Irish girl | September 10, 2007 8:16 AM | Report abuse

I think she looked really kind of dazed and nervous, like she really wasn't ready to be performing yet. Or maybe she's just done and not able to do it anymore. It's sad. I wish she could figure out something else productive to do, some kind of new career or something. Despite her being a total freak, I can't help but kind of pull for her.

Posted by: jnl | September 10, 2007 8:20 AM | Report abuse

Build a career on your body and that's a house built on a weak foundation.

Just ask Brad Pitt. Who's more than a decade older than Brit-Brit. And still looks great.

(Admittedly he didn't give birth to two kids, but also isn't out baring his gut and his butt to the world)

Posted by: Bogota | September 10, 2007 8:23 AM | Report abuse

I just watched the Sarah Silverman clip from the VMAs and I think she is so not funny. Am I the only person who thinks she has no talent?

Just wondering.

Posted by: Irish girl | September 10, 2007 8:30 AM | Report abuse

re: britney...it's pretty clear that people either dislike her or just feel sorry for her and either one of those emotions is not what you build your comeback upon.

re: sarah silverman...she's not funny, she's mean, and she gets away with it because people think it's supposed to be cool to like her. her type of humor, a la don rickles (look him up, kids) which isn't really humor at all, is born out of a lot of poor self esteem.

Posted by: methinks | September 10, 2007 8:38 AM | Report abuse

She looks like a thrice-run-over stripper working the day shift.

Posted by: Adult | September 10, 2007 8:40 AM | Report abuse

-Britney's performance was brutal to watch; it was like she just gave up. She should have taken Timberland's offer to help her.

-Sarah Silverman is mean and unfunny. I can imagine why she has a TV show.

Posted by: Lisa1 | September 10, 2007 8:50 AM | Report abuse

I felt embarrassed for her just watching it, esp. in that outfit! She looked like she couldn't remember what to do half the time. I'm not a Brit fan, but I do recall clips of past performances in her heyday that were much more intricate and physically demanding. Pretty much everything that this was not.

I don't know that I could call this a comeback, but I can certainly call it pathetic. Still I can't help feeling a little sad for her - she just looked so lost up there.

Posted by: Jess | September 10, 2007 8:50 AM | Report abuse

correction: I can't imagine why she has a tv show.

Posted by: Lisa1 | September 10, 2007 8:51 AM | Report abuse

That had to be the most lackluster performance in recorded history. At one point it looked like she wasn't in the mood anymore so she just moved around on stage until the track was done.

The outfit looked like something she normally wears on the Starbucks runs and thankfully the stockings were new.

I can't even feel sorry for her. I don't think she wants to comeback she's content just wallowing and that's where she should have stayed rather than blowing a great opportunity. Chris Brown should have opened, now that was a performance.

Posted by: petal | September 10, 2007 9:10 AM | Report abuse

Her endless string of weird self-displays annoys me, but this was sad. Spears didn't know her routine and performed without any energy; she looked confused and worn out. Some quiet time off (somewhere other than Las Vegas) and some serious self-evaluation seem like more urgent priorities than a "comeback" right now. And someone needs to tell Sarah Silverman that mocking someone who is clearly in trouble is not funny.

Posted by: JanetK | September 10, 2007 9:12 AM | Report abuse

methinks, Don Rickles is a legend and a hilarious wit. I'm glad to see him getting a lot of TV time recently (the late night shows, Charlie Rose).

Posted by: Mestinks | September 10, 2007 9:50 AM | Report abuse

It's a shame that Britney doesn't have people around her who truly care for her and will give her advice that's best for HER. Her mom and dad sold her out when she was a kid, and she is surrounded by sychophants who only tell her what she wants to hear so that she can make them a few more bucks.

She was a sweet kid back in the day, but now she is just a mess and she looks lost and sad.

hey, man (or woman) it's a free country.
one person's comic legend is another person's annoying, overrated so-called comic.

Posted by: methinks | September 10, 2007 10:04 AM | Report abuse

Britney is just pathetic. People need to stop taking her picture and talking about her so she can crawl back to the trailer park and wallow in the crystal meth haze that she so clearly yearns for.

Sarah Silverman, on the other hand, is freaking hilarious! No one skewers the spoiled, self-indulgent, talentless hacks that are given celebrity status merely because they have money and the ability to flash their genitals to idiots with cameras. It's not mean if it's directed at people who deserve every painful second of it; as Britney and Paris, et al do.

Posted by: JJ | September 10, 2007 10:04 AM | Report abuse

It was a terrible performance. I won't criticize her looks though she's always been a little bit of a "chunkette" and the skimpy outfits were never a good idea. So, in this case, if you're going to lip-sync, please make it believable. And if you're going to dance, make it energetic. She did neither.

Oh, and if this new show format was MTV's idea to elevate the VMAs to some upper level of respectability, they failed miserably. I think they're circling the drain now. Brit didn't help their cause.

Posted by: pops | September 10, 2007 10:09 AM | Report abuse

jj, that kind of thinking might actually wash if ms. silverman would pick on only the perps and not the innocents. britney's children shouldn't be punchlines.

Ms. Spears definitely needs a vacation - I vote Hawaii, and she can learn to hula! It's fun and good exercise, and may help her get back in touch with her "inner rhythm". I can see her much happier with flowers in her hair and a grass skirt. Come to think of it, maybe I'm just envisioning me in Hawaii....

Let me say that first of all it has been customary to put people on a pedestal in our society today. When the alleged individuals we elevate to super human fail there is in evidently a lot of criticism.

Since the public has made Spears who she is of course criticism comes with the territory.

To shed some light on the performance watching 60 minutes last night I heard Pavarotti say he is lazy and does not like to practice. It appears to me being a fellow singer- dancer, those artists who make it to a certain level are so busy causing scandal, or interviewing etc...performing and singing rehearsals are secondary.

My suggestion would have been to put spears in a blond scull cap wig like Tyra and Beyonce wear that looks really natural, and insisted she drop another ten pounds and rip up. After this transformation would have made her study the lyrics and really transmute the sexual energy of the song; and let her out there by herself to just have fun and dance like she knows how. An occasional wave at the crowd, working the stage and a lot of smiles....I mean the world wanted to see her not a legion of over zealous dancers!

Well the truth is we are all spirits going through a human experience, we may ask ourselves how does one f**** up a chance like the VMA's but when we are not happy in life it affects everything around us. We all can take a lesson from this and star in our own lives and look to ourselves for hope and inspiration not the blond divas we put so far above everyone else....

P.s. As far as Ms. Silverman I have never been more disappointed in an individual condescending another human being for self gain...but this is the society we have all created. My prayer is that this back fires on her to make her take a serious look and re-direct the sails!

RE: Pops....

I wouldn't exactly call Britney a 'chunkette'. She didn't look fat at all... her tummy is out a bit because she's had two kids. But for two kids, she looks great. She just doesn't look how she used to and most likely never will. I won't critize her for how she looked... I've had two kids and can't afford a tummy tuck like her so she can go for it. However, the performance was awful. She could have at least just danced her heart out and people would have been happy. We already know she can't sing.

Posted by: Mama | September 10, 2007 10:50 AM | Report abuse

She brings in $700,000 a month and can't hire a personal trainer or a good hair stylist? Someone needs to tell her its been too many caramel lattes at Starbucks for Brit. That performance was beyond sad and I don't know how she can come back from this one.

Posted by: genuine risk | September 10, 2007 10:51 AM | Report abuse

methinks I totally agree with you. I would also like to see Sarah pick on men the way she does the women who she thinks make mistakes. As a mother, I say leave the babies alone.

Posted by: Irish girl | September 10, 2007 12:00 PM | Report abuse

One word for Britney: liposuction.

Oh, wait: the belly isn't fat, just saggy. Therefore the tummy tuck mentioned above is definitely in order.

P.S.: is that chin-rubbing dancer (right behind Brit-Brit in the pic) male or female? Sure looks like a (non-passing) drag queen to me.

Posted by: DMS | September 10, 2007 12:24 PM | Report abuse

I can forgive lip syncing if the dancing is kick you know what (ie Chris Brown). However, her dancing was so horrible (could she have even maybe tried a little bit) no forgiveness can be given! Has this chick hired a new publicist yet...she's gonna need a good one after that mess!

I am tired of all of the Britney bashing. All of the nasty comments by the morning news shows and Sarah Silverman's insults were rude, nasty and very unnecessary but I guess these news shows and Sarah Silverman count on bashing others to get ratings instead of offering real talent and real news. Regardless of what people expected, Britney still looked amazing and has made a great comeback. Perhaps her comeback did not fit into your preconceived notions but it was still a great comeback considering where she was last year. If any of you nasty and hurtful people think that you can do better maybe you should contact MTV to open the show next year. Small minded insecure people bash others to make themselves feel better.

Kanye West blames MTV for Britney Spears' less than stellar performance at the Video Music Awards.

"Man, they were just trying to get ratings, and they knew she wasn't ready and they exploited her," the 29-year-old rapper said Tuesday on Sirius Satellite Radio's "The Morning Mash Up."

The network made a "bad move" by having the troubled pop star open Sunday's event in Las Vegas, said West, who feels he should have kicked off the show with "Stronger," the first single from his new album, "Graduation."

"They exploited her, they played me and I really don't mess with MTV," he said.

Spears, 25, looked unprepared while performing her new song, "Gimme More," to a bewildered audience of her music industry peers. She seemed nervous and, at times, stopped singing altogether.

In a praise-filled statement released Tuesday afternoon, MTV said it "... has a long and collaborative relationship with Kanye and we hope and look forward to continuing that meaningful relationship."

West said he wanted to perform "Stronger" on the show's main stage -- where R&B hotshot Chris Brown wowed the crowd with Michael Jackson-esque dance moves -- but complied when he was asked to host a suite party.

West said it was a blow to the ego when Justin Timberlake, who also hosted a suite party, ended up "on the big stage" to give the closing performance with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado.

"Those are the big things, and you know what I do man, I really made the song 'Stronger,' you know, for stadiums," he said.

West -- who threw a tantrum backstage after losing all five categories for which he was nominated -- said he has bonded with 50 Cent over what they view as disrespectful behavior from MTV.

"So why do you have me do 'Stronger' in a suite, but you end the show with Justin?" he said. "I looked at 50 like, yo, we need to help each other as much as possible."

50 Cent has said he'd stop making solo records if West's new album outsells his "Curtis" CD in their first week out. Both albums were released Tuesday.

MTV - Britney Spears Exploitation Scandal

Where are the media and advertising watchdog groups? Will nobody stand up and call MTV out?

Having recently lost her Aunt, gone through marriage and divorce with a cheating husband, and currently in a custody battle over her 2 children-- Britney Spears was not ready to take the stage.
