The beauty or lack of beauty of SJP, Sandra OH, Britney, and Madonna is subjective and, thus, debatable, but, gosh, how mean can Maxim get?

And can you pronounce SJP the unsexist woman alive when Ann Coulter and Rosie O'Donnell are still living?

Posted by: Mina | October 26, 2007 8:32 AM | Report abuse

That one's easy, Ann Coulter is a fictional character and Rosie isn't a woman. QED

Posted by: M Street | October 26, 2007 8:37 AM | Report abuse

Who exactly is the targeted audience for Dina Lohan's show? And why would they ever want to watch it?
What a greedy, selfish, desperate woman.

Posted by: surlychick | October 26, 2007 8:44 AM | Report abuse

I've often wondered the same about SJP and Amy Winehouse, although I think AW before she became meth addict anorexic was a fine figure of a woman. At least there was proportion.

Posted by: Stick | October 26, 2007 8:55 AM | Report abuse

Mina, I couldn't agree with you more.

Across Rwanda right now there must be a sense of joy. Hopefully Paris will forget about the trip and never reschedule.

Granted this is in the rumor mill but Amy knows darn well she does more that drink before a show. She's giving up the one substance but the others are still on the table?

Any chance that Jin gets knocked off LOST now? Seems to be the trend among characters that get arrested for DUI...although I hope it is just a coincidence! I like Jin.

SJP has been a train wreck ever since "Square Pegs." How she gets jobs in the movie industry is a mystery to me!

Competely off-topic: Does anyone else remember the "big vagina" episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm? If I'm in a meeting at work and think about it, I can't help giggling.

I'm sorry, isn't Russell Crowe a little mean? Tell the whole world that Leo didn't loose his virginity until after 1995? And since when is 17 a late bloomer?

Women seem to find Sarah Jessica Parker sexy.

Posted by: Kacoo | October 26, 2007 9:17 AM | Report abuse

Wow, that Maxim article, just... wow. What misogynist jerks. In all honesty, Sarah Jessica Parker is no great beauty, but she has a nice figure and she seems really fun and happy and I like her laugh. So, no, I don't see how, with all of her nice qualities, she is the all time unsexiest. They just come across as total bastards.

Posted by: Phoebe | October 26, 2007 9:20 AM | Report abuse

Greenbelt - Leonardo was born in 1974, so in 1995 he was 20 or 21.

Posted by: h3 | October 26, 2007 9:28 AM | Report abuse

That Maxim article sounds like it was recorded and transcribed by a bunch of guys sitting in a bar pounding back beer.

Posted by: jes | October 26, 2007 9:32 AM | Report abuse

what an ugly promotional stunt by maxim, esp considering the pimple-flecked, doughboy look of their editorial staff.

True or not it was very tacky of Russell Crowe to say. I so disappointed in him; he has been downgraded on my Men Wish List.

The only women the editors of Maxim know are 'real girls' who come with instructions.

I don't think it can properly be called an AUTObiography if you are not the main subject.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 9:46 AM | Report abuse

I admire SJP for her good attitude, nice family and good manners. And she hasn't spent a fortune having her face redone. To be voted unsexy by that group of idiots is a compliment. Talk about virgins.

Posted by: POS | October 26, 2007 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Notwithstanding Maxim's nearly complete lack of any redeeming qualities whatsoever*, its use of the phrase "Barbaro-faced" to describe SJP is dead-on.

Posted by: byoolin | October 26, 2007 9:55 AM | Report abuse

* I say "nearly" complete lack of redeeming qualities only because Maxim occasionally publishes trashy pix of Alyssa Milano.

And that's gotta be worth some kind of redemption.

Posted by: byoolin | October 26, 2007 9:58 AM | Report abuse

Who is this person who wrote about SJP like that? I don't think SJP is a beauty on the outside, but seems to be a very beautiful person on the inside. She doesn't dress like trash, and I have NEVER read anything about her to make her seem ugly to the public, and seems like a truly caring person.

Posted by: Sterling | October 26, 2007 10:02 AM | Report abuse

And SJP seems like she's fairly smart.
The idea that maxim finds dumb sexy and smart unsexy is just ...shocking... (rolling eyes).

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 10:07 AM | Report abuse

SJP's probably a lovely person, and she's married to that Inspector Gadget fella, so she's probably good with tools, and her clothing line is affordable and looks good on The Lovely Mrs. byoolin and The Kid, so, yeah, mad props to her and all that.

But the (no doubt scientifically and statistically rigorous) people at Maxim determined that she's "unsexy."

It's in print, so it's gotta be true.

Posted by: byoolin | October 26, 2007 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Boy, did Maxim ever get that right. Sarah Jessica Parker is so completely unattractive. While nobody's perfect, what annoys me to no end that she is hyped on magazine covers and on Sex and the City as some raving beauty. She's just not. She looks like Herman Munster in drag. I'm glad Maxim put it out there!

Posted by: Steve | October 26, 2007 10:11 AM | Report abuse

in the rush to get all hot, bothered, and huffy over what maxim wrote, please remember you're talking about maxim. they are a skin mag. to be called unsexy by them something of a back-handed compliment since all their interested in are pictures such as described by our own byoolin.

Posted by: klw | October 26, 2007 10:16 AM | Report abuse

For the editors of Maxim, and the magazines target demo, sex is a lonely enterprise, often enhanced by airbrushed photos. Sexy, more properly defined, is who would you happily spend a rainy weekend in a beach cottage with. SJP makes that list.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 10:20 AM | Report abuse

I don't think SJP is any great beauty, but she has great personal style, her wardrobe on SitC notwithstanding. Why are any of us giving quarter to the cretins of Maxim?

Posted by: jelo | October 26, 2007 10:21 AM | Report abuse

I can't get in an uproar over anything in Maxim, but I did think the comment about the SATC cast including four very unsexy women was interesting. I think what women liked about SATC was that they could identify with the characters. Watching four supermodels talk about sex would have been a lot less enjoyable for many women, in my opinion (although I have a hard time agreeing that the four women who were on the show were very unsexy, in particular Kristin Davis).

Posted by: SATC Women | October 26, 2007 10:23 AM | Report abuse

I don't usually go for the gossip, but the SJP unsexiest woman thing caught my eye. I always considered her a bit overrated, but she's sexier than huge numbers of other celebs. I was going to go ahead and subscribe to Maxim since I got an offer for 2 years for $14.97, and figured, $15, bucks for two years, how can I go wrong. However if Maxim believes that all four of the women on Desperate Housewives are unsexy, I'm not going to bother, so I'm glad I saw this. I won't waste my time. I've never seen the show, but I've seen the women, the commercials and bits and pieces of the show, and the woman with the dark hair is pretty hot I think. The blonde is pretty sexy, and the other two aren't too shabby. I guess everyone at Maxim dates gorgeous women and these are throwbacks in their world. Fine by me, throw them my way when you're throwing them back, I'll be glad to lower my standards.

Posted by: Glen | October 26, 2007 10:24 AM | Report abuse

Wasn't SJP in a movie with Nicholas Cage some years ago called, umm, "Wedding in Las Vegas" or similar? I remember thinking she was cute as a button and had a really nice figure then. However, age and uber-skinniness have not been kind to her face.

But man, there sure is a double standard for what makes a man desireable versus the standards for women. Ref: Chris Robinson.

I would like to nominate Leo DiCaprio for the proposed list of closeted celebrities. There is something not-manly about that man. But maybe it's just because he still looks like a 12 year old, and I'm not a pedophile.

Hey cubeland:

here are SJP's credits.

What is Dina Lohan's reality show called: How to Enable a Young Person to Destroy His/Her Life? It consists of a group of young people all competing for the title. Each week the loser of the personal challenges has to stay while the winner gets to go home to a normal life.

As for SJP, maybe she is not a raving beauty, but wow, there are so many more not good looking chicks out there: Amy Winehouse as mentioned, Rosie O'Donnell (she's at least genetically female, I think), Courtney Love, etc.

Posted by: ep | October 26, 2007 10:35 AM | Report abuse

Has Maxim always been this meowey/catty? Is its fratboy readership secretly ubermetrosexual behind closed doors..with floofy pedicures and pillow fights? Lucky anorexic Brazilian supermodels, have at em!

Posted by: erm | October 26, 2007 10:38 AM | Report abuse

Don't you think part of Maxim's point (other than just being snarky and misogynistic) is that SJP is marketed, on magazine covers and advertising, like she's a glamour gal, sexy, babe, when in actual fact, she's rather ordinary?

That said, I think it's the ordinariness, style and intelligence more than makes up for the lack of "babe/sex appeal" found in many of Maxim's favorite women.

SJP seems like the type of person who could care less what Maxim thinks since her self esteem isn't wrapped up in the superficial. But how do I know, I've never met her. That's the impression she gives. I find it refreshing.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 10:41 AM | Report abuse

Who pays any attention to anything Maxim has to say, anyway? Maybe some 14-year-old bag of raging hormones that's locked in a bathroom and holding the magazine one handed, but that's about it.

I read Maxim for the first couple years it was in print, and back then it was a decent mag. It had some decent satire, fashion spreads, action sports features, and a few pics of up-and-coming starlets in lingerie and swimsuits thrown in for good measure. But the good story ideas ran dry after the first couple dozen issues and since then it has been nothing but soft-core porn, junior high school humor, and pointless, badly articulated rants that don't warrant half the column-inches they are given.

Memo to the Editor-in-Chief of Maxim: You're adults now. Think with the big head, not the little one.

Maxim is mean, and I hope women like Alyssa Milano will quit posing for them now. Besides, the least sexy woman alive is probably un-viewable.

Speaking of the View (sort of), I saw George Carlin on there this week saying the people in the CA wildfires deserved it due to their gimme-gimme lifestyles. Are we so used to inflammatory comments by him that this one didn't get picked up by anyone?

Posted by: sarabear | October 26, 2007 11:02 AM | Report abuse

I adore SJP's talents, and I'm not a big fan of Maxim. But that list is eerily similar to my imaginary list of people I'm certain smell bad.
SJP has gotta have cigarette breath. She has to.

Kinda surprised to read one post that said women relate to the women on Sex in the City. Yikes. If any of my daughters thought they could relate to any of them, I would feel sorry for them. I would never have dated anyone like them (except maybe Charlotte who was the least sleazy). My wife thinks most of their exploits are incredibly skanky. I agree.

Posted by: Sam | October 26, 2007 11:33 AM | Report abuse

Publishing an Unsexy list is very mean-spirited in my opinion.

It's not nice to ridicule physical attributes that a person was born with and cannot change. If your eyes are a little too close together or your legs too short, there's nothing you can do about it, so it's unfair for others to point that out.

I think SJP is beautiful!

I know my husband would agree with SJP unsexy assessment. He'd suffer thru SITC with me but always say how SJP looks like a man.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 11:58 AM | Report abuse

The only SATC girl that I found remotely likable and/or sexy was Kristin Davis, who as a character always seemed completely out of place.

Posted by: 23112 | October 26, 2007 12:05 PM | Report abuse

Sam, I'm the one who made the comment about women relating to the SATC characters and wanted to clarify what I meant. I personally don't sleep around and neither do any of the women that I hang out with. In fact, most of my friends have been happily married for several years, and they were hardly wild before the fact. Still, I can relate to some of the plot lines on the show (being broken up with on a post-it note -- in my case it was an email from someone I dated for two years, sometimes feeling like your married friends look down on your lifestyle because your not married, having a hard time finding Mr. Right, female bonding, etc.). I guess that even though the sexual behavior of the women on SATC is not my personal cup of tea, I never found it necessary to judge the women for being "incredibly skanky" and the issues that I could relate to kept me interested in the show.

Posted by: SATC Women | October 26, 2007 12:12 PM | Report abuse

I take it as a given that the Maxim piece was puerile and uncalled for. I agree that sexiness is a completely different trait than mere physical attractiveness. I'm willing to accept that in real life SJP is brilliant, witty, kind-hearted, unselfish, etc.

All that being said, I do not think she's (physically) attractive and would even go so far as to use the word "homely." Which wouldn't matter if she (and many others I could name) weren't constantly being sold to us as a (physically) beautiful woman. I think Maxim was doing a "the emperor has no clothes" thing there.

In the interest of gender neutrality, I'll also say that I'm tired of being expected to find atractive whoever that Grey's Anatomy actor (McDreamy?) is. He always looks dirty (for God's sake -- grow an effing beard or shave, you slob) and it would take only the slightest increase in the force of gravity for the tip of his dreadful nose to find itself touching the tip of his chin.

Although I liked SATC, aside from all the sex and superficiality, it was very well written, but I also never found SJP attractive, and never could understand how all of the men on the show fell all over Carrie. I could understand if she had personality or intelligence, because if she did, it didn't show, she seemed to be incredibly insecure. The Miranda charactor, to me, seemed to be the only one that wasn't 2 dimensional.

Californian, I have to agree. Glad you are home and safe. My heart goes out to all the people who have lost their homes.

30 year old female fan of SATC here. I agree with the others who said that SJP is extremely manly looking. And have you seen those wrinkles!!? Yikes! My mother has better skin than her. And not to be harsh, but I once saw an interview of her on tv and she struck me as a pretentious, intellectual-wannabe, who simply did not have the vocabulary or intelligence to be so. She made some sort of idiotic reference to not understanding what it's like to be African-American. And she sounded like a typical 14 year old, who had just started reading Nieztche or something..
So in summary, I dont think SJP is smart or remotely attractive. I think she's hardworking, somewhat socially aware, incredibly lucky and probably striving to better herself -- which, in all fairness, is a quality I respect. But that's about it.

Oh, and talking about horses, you know who's getting really manly and horsy these days? Brooke Shields. When is the media going to point that out?

I think it's refreshing that SJP has not surgically remade herself into a mannequin to fit some stupid "ideal" of beauty, changing everything she was born with (a la Ashlee Simpson) so she can get more movie roles or whatever. Yeah I agree she has a very long face, but part of it is the way she wears her hair -- long, stringy, parted in the middle (not to mention in need of a shampoo and deep conditioner) emphasizes the long face. In whatever season of SATC it was where she had that adorable blond bob, that was her best hair ever, dramatically improved her appearance, and balanced the long face. Sure she is wayyyy too veiny and bony, but regular intake of food would fix that. In the season of SATC where she was pregnant in real life, she had put on some weight and looked a LOT better.

Madonna, now, I don't know what her deal is, she gets more stretched and masculine and veiny every time I see a photo of her. And I think SHE has had work done, as her face looks totally different. Cheek implants or jaw work or something, I don't know.

I was going to start with something like, let's name Maxim biggest A-holes, but it seems to have been taken care of. Who cares if she's sexy or not, the point is an article like that is mean and inaccurate and meant to appeal to cretins. I'm kind of wanting to name Sam biggest Ahole now, even though I don't usually like ad hominem attacks in forums like these. These were fictional characters meant to highlight relationship issues, of course they had to have a lot of sex, there were 6 seasons! And anyways, to say, I'd never date any of them based on only that is so double-standard-ish and neanderthal (spelled right?). I know thought like that is out there and prevalant, even in nice guys, even in my friends, but ugh. I don't like it, and I think Hax would agree with me.

Also, I used to steal my bf's Maxims all the time in college (around 2000) and don't remember it being so mean. A lot of it was tricking your gf into doing X, but it all seemed to have more of a Gene-like reverence, and not this judgment and entitlement to hot women that the magazine promotes now. I'm seeing it more in the Junkies in the morning too, if anyone else listens to them.

I don't find SJP attractive for at least one reason that has to do with SATC: her character is always written to hook up with attractive-looking men. Unreal! Were you a single heterosexual man in NY (where single women outnumber single men by a long shot), why would you be attracted to the SJP character instead of thousands other women that are far more attractive? It doesn't help either that in real life she's married to Ferris Bueller.

Parker clearly used her position as one of the producers to write up her character into romances with good-looking men. It reminds me of Barbra Streissand, not exactly the best-looking actress, that had her movie characters hooked up with the likes of very handsome men like Robert Redford and Nick Nolte.

Russell Crowe was just goofing on Leo. It sounded to me like he was merely pointing out that the last time he'd worked with Leo was when Leo was still young and naive. You don't work with Russell Crowe if you're not up for macho posturing and probably a lot of bar fights. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio does not look 12 anymore. When I saw him in Blood Diamond, I couldn't believe how he'd matured. He actually looks like a man now! A good-looking one at that!

It always amazes me when a comedian says something shocking and people are offended. George Carlin has been offensive for years, long before this California comment. The only difference is that he forgot to take into account a key ingredient in comedy: tragedy + TIME = comedy. Time is crucial.
