Oscar: The Benefits of Plan B

The 2008 Academy Awards ceremony: It ain't dead yet. Yesterday members of the Directors Guild announced that they have reached an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. That contract could -- key word: could -- finally lead to a new deal between the Writers Guild and the Hollywood studios. And what does that mean? Well, among other things, that the Oscars could go on as usual, with no protest from picketing scribes. George Clooney could walk the red carpet in front of the Kodak Theatre without fear of reprisal. Ryan Seacrest could again ask Clooney inane questions during E!'s pre-Oscar ceremony coverage. Viewers could again complain that the Academy Awards broadcast was way too long and boring. All would be right with the world. Of course, I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Thus far, the writers have only pledged to carefully "analyze and evaluate" the...

Hollyweirder: Brit vs. Tom vs. Eddie

In Hollywood, truth is often stranger than fiction. For proof, look no further than these three prime examples from the week in Celebritology. 1. Tricky Brit That clever girl, Britney Spears. After pix surfaced yesterday of the walking disaster shopping for home pregnancy tests, close Spears pal Sam Lufti said Spears and boyfriend of a few weeks Adnan Ghalib were "just toying with the paparazzi." See, it's like this -- Brit thought she'd do something all crazy-like to make us think she's like totally wacko when really she's just mostly wacko. I mean she'd hardly choose now as the time to play Russian roulette with the birth control, what with that pesky custody case taking up all her time and in-store appearances, like this alleged naked meet-and-greet earlier this week at an L.A. Betsy Johnson boutique. Still, anything's possible. She's so country, y'all! Stranger than fiction because... Spears remains a...

The Oprah-fication of America

Oprah's on! And on and on and on... (Getty Images) Okay, we've talked about Oprah Winfrey here before. And either you people are humoring my distaste for the doyenne of daytime or the average Celebritology reader is so far out of the mainstream you'd send Bobby Trendy into cardiac arrest. What has inspired my doubt, you ask? The continued creep of Winfrey's influence into popular culture. Someone -- a lot of someones -- it seems, is watching, emulating, buying. How else to explain O's unchecked sprawl into TV, satellite radio, film, magazines, books, Broadway and politics? The latest front in this woman's seemingly unstoppable ubiquity is cable television. Discovery networks yesterday announced the creation of OWN -- the Oprah Winfrey Network, set to launch next year in approximately 70 million homes in America. From the AP story: Winfrey envisions the programming dealing with issues such as money, health, weight,...

Does he really add a macho image to Huckabee (who, you have to admit, has a pretty wimpy last name)? What would Dennis Kucinich need? His wife is gorgeous but he looks like a character in "The Lord of the Rings." -- Submitted via last week's Celebritology Live discussion Well, since you asked... Dennis Kucinich Ideal B-List Action Movie Endorser: Beastmaster's Marc Singer. Why? The vegan candidate, often portrayed as the milkiest of milquetoasts, needs to demonstrate that even animal-loving types can take on a despotic Rip Torn or rely on our vast, untapped national animal intuition resource to win the war on terror. Hillary Clinton Ideal B-List...

Comment Box: Update -- Madonna and Child

Madonna and David Banda visit Malawi in April 2007. (AP) How is Madonna's adopted son doing? -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live discussion All outward indications point to a thriving David Banda, the now two-year-old Malawian Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie added to their family in October 2006. In fact, British tabloids reported last week that the Malawi government official charged with monitoring Madge and David has recommended that the singer be granted full custody of Banda, writing: "Mrs. Ritchie presents a confident and able parent. There are clear indications that David is becoming a happy, secure toddler. It is in the best interest of the child to remain in her care." In fact, Madonna, Ritchie, daughter Lourdes (11), son Rocco (7) and Banda spent the New Year holiday celebrating the good news at a palatial Indian resort. The adoption is expected to be officially granted in April....
