Comment Box: Celebs Love (Not So Candid) Cameras

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt went all the way to Namibia to escape the glare of the paparazzi waiting for the birth of baby Shiloh-Nouvel. To further defuse exclusive-seeking paps, they released this official family portrait to People in June 2006. (Getty Images/People Magazine)
Washington, D.C.: Why do celebrities complain about a lack of privacy then sell photos of their babies and weddings to OK!, People, Essence, etc.? -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live discussion
Because they are fickle. Because they like being in control of the message and the medium. Because they are all suffering from multiple personality disorders.
Okay, maybe not. Let me try again: The real answer is probably as complex and nuanced as the people we're discussing.
Hmmm.... Third time's the charm? Celebrities are people, too, goshdarnit and when something's good for us, we tend to go with it. When it hurts us, we howl. One can hardly blame Jennifer Love Hewitt for howling about unflattering bikini pix or Julia Roberts for cussing out invasive photogs outside a school or Brangelina for releasing pix of baby Shiloh to nip any media scrum for the first shots in the bud.
I learned yesterday that Lynne Spears had contracts for two books. The parenting one has been postponed indefinitely. What is the other one about? -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live discussion
Righto. Though Lynn's publisher has indefinitely put her parenting book on hold, they will move forward with publishing her "memoir" "Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame in a Tabloid World." No word on when to expect this Pulitzer contender. A spokesman for the publisher says:
"The story is still being written, and we are confident in His [God's] ability to turn ashes into beauty."
Indeed.
I'm home sick today with the flu and am way bored... I've hit up all of my usual Web sites: People, EW, CNN, MSNBC, TMZ, etc., and have run out of ideas for fun Web sites to visit. Can we have a Friday list of fun sites where you can kill a few hours? Nothing dirty, just goofy. You game? -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live discussion
Stay tuned. If you could just stay sick for three more weeks, you'll be able to cruise all my favorite sites as part of an entirely redesigned Celebritology. Among many other state-of-the-art bloggy bells and whistles I'll include a listing of my Web bookmarks.

Apologies to Jeffrey Tambor and All Jeffrey Tambor Lovers The World Over
In yesterday's main post, I described Dr. Phil McGraw as "the Jeffrey Tambor of the TV talk show circuit." Lest anyone continue to think I was casting aspersions on Jeffrey Tambor's fitness as a TV star (or self-help guru), let me make it crystal clear that the reference was meant to highlight physical -- not actual -- similarities between the two. Long live Hank Kingsley.
Have a question you'd like answered? Submit it to Thursday's upcoming Celebritology Live discussion.

That was a nice apology to Jeffrey Tambor, Liz Kelly. I hereby stand down from my plans to egg your house* in revenge.
*Well, -a- house. I have no idea where you live.

I think icanhascheezburger.com is the greatest website for killing time there is. It is a sad goal of mine to get a picture of my cat on there. Maybe I'll just have to tatoo my cat on my arm like Liz instead. It seems easier.

Apparently, PETA has dropped Britney from its worst dressed ( wears the most fur) list. You know you are screwed up when even PETA cuts you some slack.
As for celeb pics, as someone noted last week, celebs tend to be narcissists. Which leads to a love-hate relationship with the paparrazzi. Please note, their anti-papparazi rants are also well covered. So either way, they get noticed.

why would you hate the paps? they're always there when you blow a tire and need a ride home.

That photo of Angeline, Brad and Shiloh is very telling in hindsight...the way she is totally focused on Brad and not at all on her newborn baby.

My favorite time-wasting website: overheardinnewyork.com, and subsidiaries (check the links at the top). Dirty AND goofy!

Do we really think Brangelina sold photos of Shiloh to avoid a media scrum? I figure they just wanted more publicity ... Angelina is a big-time attention seeker IMHO.
I also think it's interesting that in the above photo, Brad is looking at Shiloh but Ang. is looking at Brad. In keeping with her admission that she doesn't love Shiloh as much as her adopted kids, I s'pose ...
Posted by: Californian | January 8, 2008 1:47 PM | Report abuse
What? You think they *needed* publicity when Shiloh was born? I remember that being one huge freaking media circus, and if I were them, I'd certainly rather control the pictures than have every photographer and his brother competing to get the first sneak shot.

Celebrities sell photos to have more control over what the public sees, and to make money.

It was my understanding that B&A sold the picture to People magazine and then donated the proceeds to charity (or Namibia - I can't remmeber which). In any event, I thought it was a good two-fer: control the release of the first Shiloh picture and do something good with the proceeds.

www.kissthisguy.com - the archive of misheard lyrics.
Plan to spend a half hour looking through your favorite songs and how the lyrics have been misheard. People can also post when they found out their lyrics were wrong (as in "On my first date, I was in the car singing to myself and..."), and whether their lyrics are better than the original.
The title is based on the misheard lyric from Jimi Hendrix, Purple Haze: The real lyrics were "'Scuse me, while I kiss the sky;" notoriously misheard as "'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy."
Sooooo, despite the name, this site is totally SFW! I love this site!

I think you really nailed the answer to the photos question: to further defuse exclusive-seeking paps. It's sort of like how bands like Pearl Jam or DMB started releasing lots of live albums when they discovered that some enterprising pirates were taping their shows (which the bands were cool with) and then selling the bootlegs. Yeah, the bands made money with the live album sales, but it also took the wind out of bootleggers.
