Quick, Christina Ricci, Save Yourself!

By Liz Kelly

Hi Christina Ricci. Let me just come right out and say it: You look weird. You are like a living bobblehead doll or a Margaret Keane painting. Or, as depicted in the irrefutable photographic evidence below, the living embodiment of a Keane-inspired Blythe doll.

Left: Ricci. (Getty Images) Right: The Blythe doll.

A little advice, Christina: Lose the bangs and the blond. You look heaps better as a vampy goth seductress -- all black hair and "Addams Family" flashbacks.

While we're at it, let's talk about your career, too. There's no other way to say this. It may have sounded "daring" on paper, but donning a prosthetic pig snout (in the upcoming release "Penelope") is hardly on a par with DeNiro's "Raging Bull" transformation.

Quick, before all is lost, dye your hair back to its natural dark hues and prostrate yourself before Oscar-winning "Juno" screenwriter Diablo Cody, who may just be able to save you from forever being labeled the "the one with the pig snout."

That is all. Carry on.

AIIIEEEE!!! That picture is damn scary, if that is not a contender for a bride of chucky doll I don't know what is.

This is the second time today that the pic has startled me. Give a guy some warning, please.

Posted by: michael | February 28, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Yes, but she looks even worse without bangs because she has this hugely high forehead. Keep the bangs---but maybe not so thick.

Posted by: Lisa | February 28, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

I think that this new movie is kind of a daring thing for Ricci, and I'm proud of here for it. But I agree, the blonde & bangs look does nothing for her face.

Posted by: 23112 | February 28, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Hey Liz, Mirror much?

Posted by: you're kidding right? | February 28, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

I don't know - I think that Penelope movie looks kind of quirky and good. I mean I definitely agree that Christina's carear has been all over the place (uh Black Snake Moan??). But I kinda root for her since her young Addams Fam and Mermaids days.

Posted by: sjcpeach | February 28, 2008 10:55 AM | Report abuse

I dunno, when I first saw the trailer for Penelope my initial reaction was that Christina Ricci looked more feminine than she usually does. Even with the pig snout.

Posted by: Stuck @ Work | February 28, 2008 10:58 AM | Report abuse

Leave her alone. Christina Ricci is one of the few women in Hollywood who is beautiful in a unique, non-traditional way. It's precisely this somewhat odd quality about her that contributes to her beauty. I'd hate to see try to become what she's not and to start to look like every other Hollywood starlet.

Posted by: M Street | February 28, 2008 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Christina Ricci suffers from the "Britney Murphy Syndrome". Good actress with pretty dark hair and good personality decides to give that up to become a "Hollywood Lollipop" complete with dyed hair and eating disorder.

Posted by: Lisa1 | February 28, 2008 11:15 AM | Report abuse

Let's see she's in a movie with hot new star, James McAvoy, I'd wear a pig snout for that, hell I'd wear the whole pig costume.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

I kinda think the movie looks cute. It's always hard to tell from the trailer, tho. She is odd looking, but in a good way, although I do like her better as a brunette.

Posted by: tl | February 28, 2008 11:22 AM | Report abuse

I actually want to see Penelope after looking at the trailer and I just adore Christina Ricci.

I do have to say that the photo of her is not her best. She should go back to the dark hair and maybe lighten up on the foundation or something. There's a gloss thing going on

Posted by: petal | February 28, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Ricci looks much better with black hair, but I think she needs the bangs to cover her large forehead.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

Did anyone see the pics of Diablo Cody in her stripper days. She had this Goth punk pierced look that was kinda hot, but definately not your traditional stripper look. She probably made a lot a money because the guys were scared she'd beat them up!

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Sorry - but this is a pet peeve o' mine.

"dye your hair back to it's natural dark hues"

should be "its natural dark...."

Thank you, carry on.

Posted by: RiverCityRoller | February 28, 2008 11:43 AM | Report abuse

She can't help how her face is shaped--how mean can you be? I think she's lovely.

Posted by: 1shot | February 28, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

I think she's gone blond for a role on a new HBO series. I agree, blond is not her color, but we've seen worse looks for roles.

Posted by: CM | February 28, 2008 11:46 AM | Report abuse

I rather like Christina Ricci. I don't think she looks awful in that picture. Even if you argue that blond bangs aren't for her, she is hardly anywhere near Tilda Swinton's level of scariness. As for Penelope, the cast includes James McAvoy (Atonement) and Reese Witherspoon, who is an Oscar-winner. It's not like she's sharing the screen with Gary Busey.

Posted by: musicgeek | February 28, 2008 11:53 AM | Report abuse

for a great movie she is in, see The Opposite of Sex. Really sweet and funny movie.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

I like Christinia Ricci's new look. I think it suits her just fine. Makes her look more mature. I wish everyone looked that great in a bob. Speaking of bobs, has anyone seen Renee Zigweiler's new bob at the oscars? Fantastic!

Posted by: changingfaces | February 28, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

Anon at 11:29, I don't think that look is that uncommon. Can't say I know for sure beignthat I've never been to a strip joint, but I can't imagine that's a look that is all that uncommon.

Wow, Christina, loose the hair dye. It's awful. Viva natural hair!

Posted by: EricS | February 28, 2008 12:12 PM | Report abuse

SHE LOOKS FABOO. DON'T HATE.

PS: The movie looks stupid.

Posted by: holler | February 28, 2008 12:18 PM | Report abuse

Cute cut, but it doesn't work on her. And neither does the color.

Posted by: surlychick | February 28, 2008 12:32 PM | Report abuse

Oh I did not like Renee Zigweiler's hair at the oscars. Too short and sticking out in bits. i think it would have been better if she sleeked it down more, otherwise a little more length!

Posted by: sjcpeach | February 28, 2008 12:50 PM | Report abuse

Me and the missus love Christina Ricci. But she has the shortest, stubbiest, pudgiest little fingers. They're vaguely off-putting.

Seriously: the next time you see her hands, take a look. It's like she's got two thumbs and eight little hot dogs.

Posted by: byoolin | February 28, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

EricS, just FYI, if you took a poll of women and they honestly answered, you would be hard-pressed to find any that had their 100% natural hair color. Ricci enhances hers when it is black.
Plus, the word I think you mean is "lose" unless you want her to unleash the hair from something.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

I agree on her hair - with her pale skin and pretty eyes, the dark hair was so much better. Lose the blond, ASAP.

I'll forgive her the bangs (though she looks better without this variety), because bangs seem to be the craze right now, and it looks like she may have adopted them from her role as "Trixie" in Speed Racer.

"Penelope" is getting mixed reviews - it's also got many decent actors in it, so it's unfair to target Christina Ricci exclusively. There's James McAvoy, Catherine O'Hara, Richard E. Grant, Peter Dinklage, and Reese Witherspoon (who is not only starring but producing)...

Posted by: Chasmosaur | February 28, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

"Speaking of bobs, has anyone seen Renee Zigweiler's (sic) new bob at the oscars?"

They didn't look any different to me. Huh? Oh, bobs. Never mind.

Posted by: Libidinous Johnson | February 28, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Geeze, that was mean

Posted by: Sara | February 28, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Does she have a milk mustache?

I agree with Lisa1. I used to love Christina Ricci, before she stopped eating and became a anorexic-looking lollipop.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 1:39 PM | Report abuse

I actually like Christina Ricci's haircut - I think she's making the most of her face shape and I'd have bangs too if I had her forehead. I don't like the color as much, though.

As for the movie, I think it looks cute. If I was an established actress with "serious movie" cred, I don't think I'd want to do serious, heavy movies all of the time - it would be nice to mix it up. Helen Mirren essentially said the same thing regarding doing National Treasure 2 right after The Queen. Besides, I'd LOVE to work with Reese Witherspoon and James McAvoy (I heard him on a radio interview this morning and all but turned into a puddle in my car).

Posted by: Magnolia | February 28, 2008 1:41 PM | Report abuse

I'm sorry, but that was just mean. I'm not a huge Christina Ricci fan, but I've never heard of her being anything but a sweet, decent actress. Would you prefer she get cosmetic surgery to make her eyes smaller, and head less-round? Give me a break. Totally uncalled for.

And if you're going to harp on her hair - well, at least it has a bit of a style. Judging from your mug shot on this page, we can't say the same of yours.

Posted by: kc | February 28, 2008 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Liz, your gigantic elephant trunk of a nose has obviously distorted your eyesight. There's nothing wrong with the way Christina Ricci looks.

Posted by: Fred | February 28, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the whole Western world prostrating themselves over Diablo Cody? She wrote one movie that, which pretty good, is not excellent, not noteworthy, and can ascribe most of its acclaim to capturing a particular moment in time. One screenplay does not a genius make. Let's see what happens with her next screenplay

In short: get over it.

Posted by: Groan! | February 28, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

How bizarrely mean spirited.

Posted by: Not Jolie | February 28, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

You know, you can choose to wear or not wear ridiculous clothing and you can choose whether or not to wear crazy makeup and an outlandish hairstyle (rainbow colors, weaves, mullet, shaved head, etc), but you can't choose your face shap (and I think Christina Ricci's doing the best she can with hers in terms of her hair). I love ya, Liz, but it's not very nice to make fun of something people can't help or change.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

I have always liked Christina Ricci - I think she's a pretty decent actress and I also think that she is pretty in her own, sort of odd way. I can also tell you from personal experience that one gets pretty tired of the whole "goth" thing after a while.

That said, though, I don't think the new hair color works for her. The cut is slowly pulling to mind some other actress that she sort of favors, but I can't put my finger on it - Sissy Spacek leaps to mind, but I don't think that's it....anyone else think she looks like someone else (not "bride of chucky", K?)? Hmmm maybe Calista Flockhart?

Anyway, I think she's cute even with the color and cut.

Also, I would like to take a stand against the Liz Kelly bashing. Liz Kelly is entitled to her opinion and we all come to this blog to snark on celebs, not on Liz Kelly or each other. So there. :P

Posted by: sunnydaze | February 28, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

What annoys me is that "edgy" people (kids/adults/whatever) are the first people to scream if one of their own actually shows some happiness. People are multifaceted; it's okay to be happy and wear bright colors if you're in a good mood (or just want to do something different), just as it's okay to be edgy and/or gothic when you want to be. Doing one or the other all of the time would probably get pretty tiring.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 2:16 PM | Report abuse

sunnydaze said it all. I like Ricci, loved "The Opposite of Sex" (with Lyle Lovett!) and think she's cute but better with dark hair.

And go away, Liz Kelly bashers. This is not the comments section from Us Magazine, it's the Washington Post. We like to keep our snark at a certain liberal elitist level. Don't be dragging us down.

Posted by: e | February 28, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Oops, forgot to also agree with the commenter above who's already tired of Diablo Cody. Just the pseudonym made me want her to go away quickly. We get it, it's your stripper name. And you were a stripper. And you have a stripper tattoo. That's nice, dear.

Posted by: e | February 28, 2008 2:35 PM | Report abuse

I'm confused, everyone seems to think the lollipop comment was a reference to Christina's round face. Whenever I hear of someone referred to as a human lollipop I think excessive weight loss making said person resemble a lollipop, (stick body, lollipop head).

LEAVE LIZ KELLY ALONE - Chris Crocker

I am sick of the Bob. So far 3 women in my office of 65 have gotten it. What has Kat(i)e Holmes Cruise wrought with this hairstyle? Its worse than the Rachel.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

To all the Liz defenders, I would imagine in that line of business the rule of "if you can dish it, you can take it" should apply, no?

Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2008 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Diablo Cody is not Brook Busey-Hunt's stripper name. It is a pen name. Her stripper names have been Bonbon, Roxanne, and Cherish.

Is it blonde? Looks more red/brown (and the eyebrows were left out of the dying -- why do people forget their eyebrows?). I'm a natural blonde, maybe that's why. I also think the lip color is wrong. But I like the look.

2:59, "if you dish it, you should be able to take it" is the playground standard when hurling insults directly at someone. No, it does not apply on gossipy web sites. And even under playground rules, the disher and dishee are insulting each other, anonymous bystanders are not.

I guess if Britney or Christina Ricci or whoever wants to stop by and insult Liz Kelly, then that would be fair game.

Posted by: e | February 28, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

I've seen some other shots of her with that hair that look pretty good. Anyone can look awkward in a picture now and then. But maybe it's the makeup or the lighting, she looks older than she is.

Posted by: Angela | February 28, 2008 3:29 PM | Report abuse

My reference to lollipop was to describe actresses/celebs who stop eating and become skeletal, so their heads look huge. (I accidentally hit "Post" before I signed my post; it was the milk mustache/lollipop one.)

Leave Liz Kelly alone -- I thought her comments about Christina Ricci were funny, and that's what this blog is all about -- pure, unadulterated snarking.

I'm so over Diablo Cody's NAME. Why would you call yourself the Spanish word for devil and a town in Wyoming for crying out loud? It just screams "trying really hard to be controversial and shocking".

leftovers from the chat: Your hair doesn't fall out during pregnancy because of HORMONES, not vitamins. You can get pre-natal vitamins at CVS and give it a try. Your hair won't get better. Not to mention, you stay on pre-natals when you're breastfeeding, and your hair still falls out. I guess the parents are big LK fans.

Posted by: atb | February 28, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

atb...

The ones you get with a prescription have different ingredients (like the addition of folic acid) then the ones you get "over the counter". I worked in a pharmacy for 13 years.

"So how do they affect hair growth?

Folic acid in particular is one of the main components of many hair growth formulas as it helps in the formation of new cells. It is one of the many B-complex vitamins and speeds up production of fresh cells in order to replace the old ones. Aside from preventing birth defects, folic acid can cause the hair to grow faster and the strands to become thicker.

The jury is still out on whether prenatal vitamins really contribute to making hair grow faster. It is an advantageous side effect though because pregnant women tend to lose hair approximately three months after delivery due to the body's hormonal changes.

If you do want to make your hair grow faster during and after pregnancy, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain flavonoids. They are antioxidants that may encourage hair growth and protect the hair follicles as well. Use shampoos and conditioners that contain silica and biotin. Also, make sure that your diet has enough supplements of Vitamin E, inositol, biotin, Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, and coenzyme Q10."

I like to think of Christina Ricci as the female Johnny Depp. Great acting, but quirky choices in roles. Which makes sense when you consider how much Christina resembles Winona Ryder who used to date Johnny Depp.

But, yeah, the hair, not so good a choice. Oh well, she will change it again soon.

Yeah, Diablo Cody can go away now. She wants to be shocking -- HEY I used to be a stripper, aren't you shocked. Let me mention it again. BUt, don't anyone else dare bring it up or try to use me for commercial purposes. Get over yourself dear. And learn how to dress. That Pebbles dress was almost waaaaaay to revealing without being edgy. You want revealing and edgy, try Cher.

I think this column is degenerating into something stupid. I'm sorry, but Liz -- you have nothing clever to say, or original for that matter and now you have resorted to these mean-spirited cheap tactics to get comments. Low and mediocre work. I used to come here hoping that once in a while you'll write something witty or insightful or intelligent. I gave up, and now I remember why. Meanness does not equal cleverness. Snarky obnoxious comments do not make an attractive fun read, and this applies to gossip columns as well. Rechurning other people's reports is very convenient, it's just not fun for us.
And just out of curiosity have you seen yourself in the mirror? You don't look like any beauty queen yourself!

I was out of town all week so I missed this, but Christina Ricci is very pretty and her career is ok, not great. But, I bet she has made 10 times more money then Liz has made.

2) makes more money then Liz
3) much better body then Liz -- Christina has very nice "lungs".
