Timeline: Britney's Erratic Behavior

By Liz Kelly

Since a disjointed interview with Matt Lauer in June 2006, Britney Spears's behavior has been increasingly, err, scattered. Below, we track the pop star's compounding misdeeds.

Kevin Federline. (AP)

Nov. 7-- Brit files for divorce from Kevin Federline.

Feb. 16: Spears spends 24 hours in a drug rehabilitation facility in Antigua for treatment of an undiagnosed substance abuse problem.

Feb. 17 -- Returning to the U.S., Spears wanders into a San Fernando Valley hair salon and shaves her own head.

Feb. 21 -- A bald Britney wails on an SUV with an umbrella outside Kevin Federline's home.

Feb. 21 - 22 -- Spears checks into and out and back into a California's Promises inpatient treatment facility.

March 20 -- Spears leaves rehab after "successfully" completing the center's program.

July 3 -- Spears sends a cryptic hand-written note to paparazzi agency X17 in which she says recent odd behavior was merely preparation for a movie role.

July 26 -- Reports of a disastrous photo shoot with OK! Magazine surface. During the shoot, Brit reportedly allowed her dog to defecate on a $6,000 Zac Posen dress, racked up a $21,267 bill in damaged and "taken" items and appeared to be "disoriented."

Sept. 9 -- A planned return to pop dominance quickly turns sour as a dazed Spears lip synchs her way through a disastrous performance of her song "Gimme More" at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Sept. 18 -- A judge rules that Spears is a "habitual, frequent and continuous" user of alcohol and controlled substances and orders twice-weekly random drug testing.

Oct. 1 -- Spears loses primary custody of children Sean Preston and Jayden James to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Nov. 18 -- Spears and then-new guy pal Adnan Ghalib visit Hollywood's Hustler store. Spears reportedly strips off her underwear in the middle of the store before leaving with a wig, but without paying.

Jan. 4 -- Spears hospitalized at Los Angeles's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following custody standoff with ex-husband Kevin Federline. She loses visitation rights with Sean Preston and Jayden James.

Jan. 5 -- TV's Dr. Phil McGraw pays an unsolicited visit to Spears in the hospital. McGraw is later roundly criticized by pretty much everyone and accused of capitalizing on Brit's misfortune for planning a Spears-centric episode of his show. (He later cancelled the show.)

Jan. 7 -- Brit reportedly showed up at a Beverly Hills elementary school saying she'd been sent to pick up her lawyer's children. After some confusion, Spears left alone.

Jan. 13 -- Spears and Ghalib cause a stir when they spend 30 minutes holed up in the dressing room of a Sherman Oaks Betsey Johnson store. Employees say the couple made "weird noises" before Ghalib and a British-accented Spears emerged.

Jan. 14 -- A judge rules that Britney can not see her children after the singer flees from the courthouse parking lot without setting foot inside.

Jan. 16 -- Spears and Ghalib spotted shopping for home pregnancy tests.

Jan. 17 -- The Associated Press announces that it has prepared an obit for Spears.

Jan. 24 -- In a repeat performance, Spears again flees a downtown L.A. courthouse without attending a scheduled hearing in her child custody case.

Sam Lufti: Spokesman? Manager? Svengali? (AP)

Jan. 29 -- Amid a tense weekend reunion with parents Lynne and Jamie, Spears pops out to buy a $55,000 black Mercedes convertible.

Jan. 31 -- Brit admitted to UCLA Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.

Feb. 1 -- Dad Jamie Spears is named conservator over Britney's finances.

Feb. 1 -- A restraining order filed against Spears pal Sam Lutfi by Brit's mom Lynne Spears.

Spears is spotted in Beverly Hills following her release from UCLA Medical Center. (AP)

Feb. 6 -- Brit released from UCLA Medical Center. Within hours, she reunites with photog guy pal Adnan Ghalib and visits lawyer Adam Streisand.

Can we just talk about ponies instead?

Posted by: h3 | February 7, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

I think it's kind of sad that someone has such a well-documented PUBLIC record of being so out-of-control, but there's nothing to be done to save her from herself. Her parents stepped up and tried to get her help, yet she's still allowed to do what she wants, at the risk to herself and the public at large. Whether she's a celebrity or not, where's the help with someone with problems like this?

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 12:04 PM | Report abuse

Why is Britney still wearing wigs? It's been a year since the head shaving incident. I wonder if there is some weird psychological reason like she is trying to "hide" from reality.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 12:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you, h3.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 12:16 PM | Report abuse

It's only a matter of time until "All Things Britney, All The Time" undergoes a gravitational collapse when she can no longer resist the pressure of her own gravity. She'll form her own black hole, and heaven help anyone or anything around her as she implodes. She'll be missed for 2 weeks until the next tartlet takes her place, Access Hollywood will have a week-long special, and VH1 will have a special about her next year on the 1-year anniversary.

Britney hasn't formed a singularity yet or sunk below the event horizon... just wait, she's trying.

Sounds like she's been popping every pill under the sun. Someone really needs to clean up the sleezy doctors in Hollywood, and elsewhere, who write perscriptions without seeing the patient. This is just pathetic.

Piping Hot

There once was a horse with a beautiful mane,
He moved like the wind and he loved the rain,
And if you were to ask me, "What is his name?"
His name is Piping Hot.

With a blaze of white on his forehead fair,
With a cream colored nose and light yellow hair,
With a sweet little whinny and brisk little trot,
His name is Piping Hot.

If you open the door to go out of the house,
And tried to be quite as silent as a mouse,
He would see you and whinny whether you saw him or not,
His name is Piping Hot.

Now there's more to this pony than meets the eye,
He's more human than horse, now you ask me, Why?"
His love for you swells whether you love him or not.
His name is Piping Hot.

On a cold brisk day in the middle of March,
He'll stand in his stall looking out through the arch
Of his little stall door that's beginning to rot.
His name is Piping Hot.

Now you ask me why this pony is so special to me?
Well, I will tell you and I'm sure you'll agree.
His nature is so splendid it should be highly sought,
His name is Piping Hot.

Now someday when I'm older and my life leads away
From the nice little barn with the smell of hay,
I'll always remember that pony I bought.
His name is Piping Hot.

Yes, please let's return to the ponies. Thanks, anonymous for the Alexander B poem.

Can we please move on to another troubled starlet? Britney. Lindsay, and Paris have all exceeded their allotted 15 minutes of fame.

Where are all the Scientologists to save Brit? Haven't we heard they're the only ones who can help? I think it's time for Tom w/his crazy eyes and manic laugh to show up to the train wreck.

I think I've finally topped out my Britney-News-o-meter. As a fellow human being, I hope she gets the help she needs and straightens out. As a news reader, though, until I see a headline such as "Britney Spears Caught at LAX Trying to Smuggle Lemurs Under Wig", I think I will skip past her news to other more important items like chest hair insurance, anything involving George Clooney, and rumors of the upcoming biodome construction by Brangelina.

Oddly, ever since I read the Lynn Spears court documents for the Sam Lufti restraining order I have been really fascinated with this story. If she is actually being drugged, this would explain a lot.

CentrevilleMom, you're on a roll today.

Posted by: h3 | February 7, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Do you mean she cries on Kevin's car (wails) or she beats or strikes it (whales)?

Posted by: Feb. 21 entry | February 7, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

The head shaving was almost a YEAR ago?? Wow.

I saw some of the footage of Brit's drive home and it was insane. Through it all, even though it is way over the top, I will admit that I'm kind of hooked to see how it will all end.

Posted by: sjcpeach | February 7, 2008 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Yes, because we needed another timeline of the events leading up to and including her breakdown. Please update hourly with any changes.

pnina, that was me with the poem (forgot to sign), and your welcome.

Posted by: omni | February 7, 2008 2:27 PM | Report abuse

if we ignore her, she won't go away, she'll just do something more outrageous... maybe even, *shudder* buy and neglect a pony!

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 2:30 PM | Report abuse

please, for the love of god, someone hand this girl a loaded gun so we can all move on...

"Whether she's a celebrity or not, where's the help with someone with problems like this?"

If this happened to someone you knew but wasn't famous, you'd see about the same thing. If someone does not want help, they can refuse it unless they are shown to be dangerous to themselves or others. And that is a damnably hard thing to prove.

Liz Kelly: "I continue to maintain that there is a difference between invasive, often photo-assisted, saturation and dispassionately reporting an update on Spears condition."

No saturation here. No sir. Keep moving... nothing to see here. Not even those paparazzi-stalker photos. Nope, they're certainly not here. This is a news update. Right.

Liz, I thought we all voted to stop talking about Brit in one of your polls!?! Please, please, please - enough!

If only, QV, if only.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

If only QV and anon 4:14? People here are blaming Liz for adding to Brit's pain from her postings and yet you wish death on her instead? I hope that's not your solution when someone you know or love is in pain.

Posted by: no | February 7, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

i dont wish death on her...
but the girl seems bound and determined to shuffle off this mortal coil in some sort of nigh and spectacular fashion - and every day the rest of us are subjected to the slow drip of her downward spiral. hell - lufti could be setting the whole thing up as a pay per view event as we speak...

If Brit had been arrested for the shoplifting she does, maybe she would have gotten help before things spun so out of control. But, nooooo, she's a celb so let her walk out of the store with merchanidise and we'll call the paps rather than the police.

Posted by: ep | February 7, 2008 6:19 PM | Report abuse

If you were standing on a street in New York and saw a group of teens tormenting and harassing an obviously mentally ill person, what would think of the teens? If you had a phone, would you call the police? Would you assume that surely some law is being broken?

Well, what you think of the teens is what I think of the photographers, their editors and the billionaires who run the media that post the photos.

Harassing a seriously mentally ill person is a kind of evil. It's not Darfur evil; of course not. But in its own way, it's inexcusable. It's evil. The media is behaving exactly like drug dealers and for the same motive, greed: it's capitalism without a conscience.

I'd classify moguls like Rupert Murdoch with drug dealers. The fact that there's a market for their product doesn't excuse their immorality in providing it.

The fact that most of the media's actions are legal isn't an excuse, either. Do you think that everything legal is right? Do you think a good life is defined merely as not breaking laws?

Posted by: Eric | February 7, 2008 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Well said, Eric, and I agree completely. Please note that this blog is the "market for their product." This blog posts those pictures. This blog is that media. It's not just Rupert Murdoch or big TV shows, it's right here.

STOP the Britney posts!

Well, hand her a loaded gun then run.

Posted by: LLL | February 7, 2008 10:30 PM | Report abuse

i'm sorry, but what was that 'piping hot' crap? did i miss something?

Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2008 10:32 PM | Report abuse

I just feel sorry for Britney at this point. She needs some privacy to get healed. Not even her family will give her that. Leave her out of the blog for awhile and give her a chance.

Posted by: quieter | February 8, 2008 7:40 AM | Report abuse

Really? Was this post necessary? We get this same exact run-down every single day in every single article that is posted about Britney. She's going through a terrible time right now-- trust me, we all get it. Didn't we all see this coming 10 years ago when people made that teenage girl as a sex symbol? How could she possibly be in a good place in her life right now?
As a once avid reader of celebrity scoop, I can honestly say that after this post I have officially had my fill for a very, very long time. I have officially joined the "Leave Britney Alone" camp

Doesn't anybody out there ever think about PRAYING for the Girl, or all this Mess that is produced in Hollywood? Wether it's Britney, Paris or Lindsey, do you ever think about how your own children would be, if in that kind society? Of course, your Kids would never behave like this, right??? And then you ask for a Gun to Britney????? Have you thought about what you would do, if you had a daughter like Britney????????? Think, before you talk and stop reading these columns, your better off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
