'Lost' Dueling Analyses: The Other Woman

In which Jen and Liz dissect last night's episode, introduce today's new 2 p.m. ET "Lost" chat and unveil a new "Lost" feature. Liz: Last night's episode title was clearly meant to throw the spotlight on to Juliet, the hour's prime mover and first flashback of season four. But I'm thinking this was really all about Ben, who deftly shifted between his portrayals of the puppet master and the man-child who smashes his toys when they don't bow to his desires. I worship at the altar of Michael Emerson, whose diabolical portrayal of an emotionally stunted basket case with brains to spare is a performance for the ages. But I have to ask: Ben (Michael Emerson) spins a tale for John (Terry O'Quinn). (ABC) How's that theory about Ben actually being one of the good guys faring? I'm wondering if it's a little anemic after last night's episode in which...

'Lost' Watchers (and Chatters) Take Note

Where's the weekly live "Lost" chat forum? It has given up its place on the site to make way for a bigger, better Friday "Lost" discussion -- kicking off tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET. So save your comments and questions and we'll get to them then. In the meantime, catch up by reading (or re-reading) last week's analysis. Remember, we're all still together in spirit. And if you really feel moved to say something now, well there's this nice empty comments thread just sitting here minding its own business....

Celebritology 101: Here's the Line. Right HERE.

News of the Patrick Swayze's cancer diagnosis hit the Interwebs yesterday afternoon with all the force of a major scoop. "CONFIRMED!!! Patrick Swayze DOES have cancer!", breathlessly reported one celeb-tracking blog, with exclamation-ing worthy of a Britney crotch shot story. Another site, reporting that Swayze's illness is "shrouded in secrecy," goes on to detail his supposed treatment and the inevitable debilitating side effects. I shudder to think about the contingent of paps being redeployed from Paris Hilton guru duty to capture the first images of a cancer-ravaged Swayze for the highest bidder. And the New York Post jumped on confirmation of Swayze's illness to poke a publicist who had earlier denied Swayze's condition in the eye: "The fork-tongued flack," screams Page Six, "not only denied the story, but said the 'Dirty Dancing' star had checked into Stanford University Medical Center over the Feb. 2 weekend merely for a 'gastrointestinal procedure'."...

Easing Diddy's Transition to the Left Coast

Sean 'Diddy' Combs walks this year's Oscars red carpet. (Bloomberg) Earlier this week Sean "Puffy" "P.Diddy" Combs announced he was shopping for homes on the West Coast. In an interview with AllHipHop.com he said, "In order to make movies, you gotta be where they are being made." I'm giving that the big side-eye. I understand more than anyone the urge to creatively express yourself and to push yourself to learn and accomplish new things. But Puff -- hard pill to swallow coming up next -- you are not a great actor. I'm sorry. It needed to be said. "A Raisin in the Sun" received some good reviews, but you fell far short of the talent and skill of Sidney Poitier next to Audra, Phylicia and Sanaa. And your small roles in "Monster's Ball" and "Made and "Carlito's Way," well, those didn't carry the movies either, did they? So before...

Highbrow: Marion Cotillard -- Once Sound-bitten

In a scene from the 1950 Bette Davis classic, "All About Eve," Davis is chastened by an irate playwright who -- reacting to a diva-esque monologue from Davis -- asks (and I paraphrase) "what happens when actors start thinking that the insightful words coming out of their mouths are their own?" The implication was, of course, that actors are nothing without words being fed to them and that the actor who confuses adulation with respect is treading on dangerous ground. A mural in Los Angeles. (Getty Images) As dangerous ground goes, Marion Cotillard should win some kind of long jump award for jumping clear from the Olympian heights of a lead actress Oscar win all the way to the shifting ground of public opinion in just one short week. I hesitate to write about this because it takes us out of our safety zone of light celebrity mocking and into...

Comment Box: A Baby Bump Debate

When did the hideous term "baby bump" become common to describe the state of pregnancy? I don't remember ever hearing it or reading it five years ago and it is now everywhere. I am just curious if you or other posters feel the same way. Personally, I would rather return to the days of describing a starlet as being "in the family way." -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live discussion Good question. Like Simon Cowell or Britney's crazy, it just feels like it's always been around. But one need only look at the ghosts of tabloids past to discover that "baby bump" is a new-millennial spin. Angelina Jolie, complete with newly-revealed baby bump, and Brad Pitt at the Spirit Awards. (Getty Images) The term was most recently used (here in Celebritology and basically everywhere) to describe Angelina Jolie's bulging midriff. Though she and partner Brad Pitt haven't officially admitted...
