Friday List: Celebrity Wedding Officiants

We're all about pie-in-the-sky dreaming here, kids. That's why we drew inspiration for today's Friday List from Howard Stern and soon-to-be-wife Beth Ostrosky. This week, the couple announced that they will be married by Mark Consuelos, as in Mr. Kelly Ripa. While this is probably a relief to Ostrosky's family, who might have feared a wedding officiated by Ron Jeremy or Eric the Midget, the choice of Consuelos is, erhhmm, creative. To be fair, though, Consuelos is not just some B-list actor who met wife Kelly Ripa on the set of "All My Children." He's a B-list actor who also cameoed in 10 (ten!) episodes of his wife's show "Hope and Faith" and has a degree in marketing from the esteemed University of Southern Florida. So he's obviously way more qualified to perform a wedding ceremony than, say, Tiny Tim or even "The Love Boat's" Capt. Stubing. Why Consuelos? Stern...

Photo Redux: Brit's Big Year

As we discussed/debated Monday, Britney Spears is in the midst of a renaissance. What began as baby steps in the form of a couple cameo spots on "How I Met Your Mother" last spring looks to be shaping up into a full on bid for a return to her pop preeminence. Said commenter sjcpeach: Even last year when we thought all was lost for Britney the person -- Britney the popstar managed to do pretty well with her album. I don't think she's out for the count yet. And neither does Spears or, it seems, her record company since Spears is reportedly back in the studio working on her next album. But lest we forget what a rollercoaster ride of a year it's been for Celebritology's 2007 Biggest Train Wreck, today we take a pictorial look back at Brit's big year... Britney and Russell Brand mug at a MTV Video...

Insta-Poll: Is Tom Cruise Too Old for Action?

Too old or just right? Tom Cruise at Monday's L.A. premiere of 'Tropic Thunder.' (AP) Tom Cruise, it seems, has been kicked to the curb in favor of Angelina Jolie in the upcoming action movie "Edwin A. Salt." What has Angie got that Tom hasn't? She's wanted by men (even men who look like Brad Pitt), admired by (most) women and -- at 33 -- 13 years younger than TC who, despite his ability to leap over couches in a single bound and, like, father children, is within striking distance of AARP membership. In absence of any concrete clues as to why TC was actually dropped, we'll examine the "too old" theory here (and leave the "too crazy" and "box office poison" theories for another day). And, let's face it, there are cold, hard facts backing Angie's preeminence and Tom's failing ability to muster a box office frenzy. Jolie's...

In Praise of Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan arrive at the premiere of his latest movie, 'Tropic Thunder.' (Getty Images) A lot has already been said in praise of Robert Downey Jr. He's the ultimate comeback kid, giving hope to fallen stars and recovering addicts the world over. And, although in the picture above he couldn't possibly look more like Wayne Newton, it is nearly impossible to snark at this guy -- who has gone from less than zero to iron man (literally and figuratively) over the course of his 20-some year career. Though he came of age on film in schlocky teen fare like "Weird Science" and "Tuff Turf" (and we all know "Pretty in Pink's" Duckie Dale was just a cheap RDJ rip-off) it wasn't long before Downey was leaving peers like Anthony Michael Hall behind to take on more challenging roles and garner critical praise. Parts with...

Britney Spears: Ready for Her Close-Up?

Brit turned in a respectable, and ratings-friendly, performance on CBS sitcom 'How I Met Your Mother' in April. (AP/CBS) If anyone doubted it, when Britney Spears took to the stage at last year's MTV Video Music Awards and proved she could still deliver a riveting show. Just not the one she intended. Almost a year later, we're still cringing a little inside. The numb performance, the lip-synching, the missteps, the barely-hanging-in-there weave, the costume that didn't quite fit -- all combined in a perfect storm of utter wrongness to seal Spears's reputation as a complete whackdoodle. Who would have believed that barely a year later, we would find ourselves presented with a new-and-improved Britney -- the product of strict control by dad Jamie, a rumored $20K a month on personal training, one-on-one counseling from fellow embattled celeb Mel Gibson and -- we hope -- lots of therapy and SSRIs....
