Friday List: Celeb Memoirs We Wish Existed

Katie Holmes smiles at a 'Tropic Thunder' premiere last month, but I like to think she's secretly imagining her book outline. (AP) Celebrity tell-alls are big business. From fully vetted autobiographies to scurrilously-sourced exposes, our thirst for behind-the-scenes scoop has yet to be slaked. Despite our poses about protecting the privacy of celebs, it's hard to resist a good bombshell delivered on creamy white paper and marketed with the full force of a major publishing house. This year we've seen books from Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone (he wrote that brother-in-law Guy Ritchie is a homophobe) and Britney mom Lynne Spears (who apparently had an irresistible urge to share her folksy advice for rearing pop stars in this week's debut, "Through the Storm"). Before the year's out we'll be treated to even more celeb insight from Robert Wagner (who details the night wife Natalie Wood died in 1981), Christopher Plummer...

Catching Up With Christopher Knight

(Image courtesy Debmar-Mercury/Hasbro) I didn't plan it this way, but Tuesday I found myself on the phone with the third former "Brady Bunch" star I've talked to in the past couple of years. They just keep bubbling up in my path like so many smiling spectres. And, like Cousin Oliver and eldest brother Greg before him, Peter Brady is totally nice -- perky and self-effacing, just like on TV. Except that, of course, I realize that the man on the other end of the phone isn't really Peter Brady; he is Christopher Knight and really, it's not nice of me to keep calling him Peter because he's done a lot in the past few years to get beyond his Brady-ness and Monday will move even further along that continuum when he makes his debut as a game show host. "How do game show hosts get started?" asks Knight as...

2008 Lizzies Fan Art Competition

I know, it's true. The past couple of years the annual Celebritology Honors (aka The Lizzies) have been completely dominated by celebrities. This year, though, I hope to correct the error of my celeb-obsessed ways and to shift just a little of that spotlight in a new direction. Your direction, in fact. Don't worry -- you needn't run out and get a pricey stylist, hair extensions, Botox or a red carpet-ready outfit. Instead, sharpen your pencils, mix your oils, rasterize your screen, get collage-y and channel your dormant creativity for the first ever Celebritology Honors Fan Art Competition. Surely I don't have to tell you who this is or what those squiggly lines coming out of his ears represent. (Liz Kelly for washingtonpost.com) | Submit Your Fan Art Now Now, before the malaise sets in (you know, the voice in your head saying, "This sounds like work when all...

A Funny Thing Happened to Ricky Gervais

This falls under the category of totally random musing, but I've seen the trailer for Ricky Gervais's upcoming movie, "Ghost Town," a couple of times now and I have to ask, "What the [expletive]?" Have a look for yourself: From the perky piano music to the inclusion of Greg Kinnear, recycling his "Sabrina" tux and demeanor in his umpteenth performance as a slightly bruised, but charming underdog (albeit a dead one, this time), "Ghost Town" is poised to take its place next to "Ghost" in the pantheon of beyond-the-grave rom-coms. The main difference seems to be focus -- "Ghost Town" zooms in on the go-between between the living and dead, Gervais, where "Ghost's" medium -- Whoopi Goldberg -- was (thankfully) relegated to a supporting role. Why Ricky Gervais, though? Has the mind that birthed "The Office" and "Extras" and hours of ground-breaking (and time-wasting) online entertainment really reached the point...

Reading List: Lynne Spears's Parental Advisory

(Image courtesy Thomas Nelson) Tomorrow Lynne Spears's hotly anticipated book, "Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World," debuts. The buzz preceding this launch hasn't been seen Christopher Ciccone's "Life with My Sister Madonna" landed with a resounding thud in July. Says Spears of her book: "... [this is] the story of one simple Southern woman whose family got caught in a tornado called fame, and who is still trying to sort through the debris scattered all over her life in the aftermath. It's who I am, warts and all, with some true confessions that took a long time to get up the nerve to discuss." Spears's prescient use of storm imagery alone is enough to whet my appetite for the rest of the book. What other metaphors can the showbiz mom of the century employ to illustrate her hardscrabble life? Might we...
