How to Be a Celebrity

(Courtesy Skyhorse Publishingt) Do celebrities actually have to touch their children? What are the steps to pulling off a legal paparazzo extermination? Do personal assistants really need a living wage? I know what you're thinking: Being a celebrity is harder work than you'd imagined. Just ask Leslie: Gornstein, E!'s saucy "Answer Bitch" columnist. Gornstein's how-to manual, "The A-List Playbook," is set to hit bookshelves -- and celebrity nightstands -- on Feb. 22 (Oscar day, FYI). I talked to Gornstein by phone last week after speeding through an advance copy of the "Playbook" to get her invaluable take on what makes celebrities -- or as Gornstein terms them, America's royalty -- so different from the rest of us. Read on to find out why celebrities get an average of $20,000 in free swag a month, why Angelina Jolie plays hard to get, how the stars leak their own private lives...

'Lost' Dueling Analysis: A Moving Season Premiere

In which post.com Movies editrix Jen Chaney and I resume our weekly over-analysis of what is, possibly, the most confounding TV show ever made. We welcome your theories in the comments section below and in a live chat today at 3 p.m. ET. What inauguration? "Lost" came roaring back to TV last night in a gripping two-hour premiere -- leaving some exhilarated and some more than a little confused. In the spirit of getting everyone up to date on where each character is in this multi-pronged story, we've written this handy companion to last night's premiere. Rather than do this analysis as our usual back-and-forth debate, Jen and I have agreed to a brief detente in the hopes of better serving the "Lost"-watching faithful. Instead, we'll follow each character's story arc to flesh out the important take-aways from last night's show. And, because most of our "Losties" were last...

Seeing Stars at the Creative Coalition Ball

Many creative (read: Hollywood) types were out in full force last night at the Creative Coalition's Inaugural Ball. Post.com movies editrix Jen Chaney and I were there, too, to capture the chaos that inevitably follows a collision of stars of this magnitude. The ball was one of several unofficial fetes taking place across the city last night -- but don't tell that to a pack of publicists who took their tenuous control of the red (actually blue) carpet seriously. And who can blame them when huge stars like, well, Star Jones and Jeffrey Ross were heating up the red blue carpet. Oh, alright -- A-Listers Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei -- who alas didn't re-create any of her "Wrestler" looks -- also made the scene. In fact, the press-shy Tomei totally won Celebritology's best dressed of the evening superlative for her cocktail length noir-ish frock. If a glimpse of Tomei's...

Chatting Up Tim Robbins at the Creative Coalition Dinner

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins at Monday night's dinner. (Arthur Noll for washingtonpost.com) Tim Robbins is a massive guy. Especially when stacked up against long-time partner, the slightly teensier in real life (but dazzling) Susan Sarandon. As a stream of stars representing the Creative Coalition -- the non-profit political advocacy group founded by Sarandon, Alec Baldwin and Christopher Reeve, among others -- filed by, Robbins talked to Celebritology about the election year, his hopes for the Obama presidency and his spotty memory when it comes to former Washington Post gossip columnists. When asked what he'd like to see the new Obama administration do first, Robbins said he'd like to see the detention center at Guantanamo Bay closed. "Then, just a return to respect for the Constitution," said Robbins. "I'd like the U.S. to reinvest in the documents that made us great in the first place." Robbins only broke character...

For Joaquin Phoenix, a Bad Rap

First, Joaquin Phoenix -- who everyone generally agreed was pretty good at his craft -- announced last October that he would quit acting to concentrate on his musical career. Then, he started looking like this -- abandoning genetically-gifted looks for what can best be described as a fat suit and Rick Ruben-esque beard. Now we have this troubling footage, apparently shot over the weekend in Las Vegas where Phoenix took to the stage at Las Vegas's Lavo Nightclub to rap. Badly. Close friend Casey Affleck is filming Phoenix's foray into music and and followed him as he clumsily worked his way through an unremarkable, lazy rhyme, not stopping when Phoenix tumbled into the audience: Will Afflleck's docu-drama be a serious look at Phoenix's new career or is are they pulling a fast one only to surprise us later with a "Borat"-like faux docu-comedy? That was my hope until I read...

The Impact Film Fund Party: Fact vs. Fiction

Jen Chaney attended Impact Film Fund's late-night inaugural party on Sunday at D.C.'s Fur nightclub. A breakdown of the event follows. UPDATED: Now includes video! For some reason, a lot of rumors were spawned about the Impact Film Fund's inaugural bash. Initially, I heard the non-profit organization planned to throw a more formal inaugural ball. That turned out to be false. Back in December, everyone was saying it was a done deal that Kanye West would headline their massive soiree. This, also, did not end up happening. Now that the event has actually transpired, I finally feel I can confidently separate the truth from the untruths about the Impact event. So here's the scoop: Fact: Ron Howard was there. Yes, the Oscar-winning film director and Hollywood A-lister Formerly Known as Opie Taylor showed up, pausing briefly on the Impact mini-red carpet to talk to a few reporters. The man apparently...

At BET Honors, Stars are Big But Not Very Chatty

Jen Chaney was on the red carpet at Saturday's BET Honors, where Mary J. Blige, Tyler Perry and Magic Johnson were among the honorees. Here's her recap of the celeb-heavy event, which preceded a ceremony and series of performances at the Warner Theatre. The red carpets are being rolled out all over Washington this weekend. And already things are getting intense. At the BET Honors, an event that pays homage to African-American achievers in entertainment, education and public service, the pre-ceremony show often got hectic. High-wattage stars were ushered swiftly down the carpet, well before many of us got to ask important questions like, "Who are you wearing?" Members of the press occasionally got snippy with each other. Even Gabrielle Union's publicist seemed perturbed. But maybe she's just like that. A few observations from the evening: Joss Stone flashed some hot, glimmery blue eye shadow. Which made me like her....
