What, no mention of the passing of Pat Hingle?! Although he would not have received a regular mention in the Morning Mix, I believe most of your readers would recognize him, even if they couldn't name him (for one reference - he played Commissioner Gordon in the late-80s/early 90s Batman movies). But he appeared in so many movies and TV shows. I loved his voice and his easy manner. He was a terrific character actor and will be very missed in Hollywood. I am also disappointed that few publications, if any (I have yet to find any) have actually written or at least run an obit for him, only running a short item on his passing.

Liz- any truth to George Clooney and Paris Hilton dating? (Heard it on Mix this am). It's got to be a joke. I just has to be.

Sorry for being ghoulish, but I still want to know where everyone was between the time Jett went into the bathroom and the next morning when he "died in his father's arms".

Curioulsy yours,

Ha! Now that I am back at work (sadly) I get to read this blog regularly. I mean, I could read it at home, but somehow, its more fun at work.

Amy Winehouse looks. . .not terrible?

Posted by: jelo | January 5, 2009 8:47 AM | Report abuse

Happy New Year, everyone!

"Will Smith named top earning movie star of 2008" -- not to mention also the top-earning no-I'm-not-a-Scientologist!

"Madonna's daughter Lourdes enrolls in acting school" -- well, it's about time someone in that family learned how to act.

"Scarlett Johannson wins fight to shut down unofficial Web site" -- Dorkus, did you create a website to display that $5,300 Kleenex you bought on eBay?

"Katie Holmes spends $14 million in six months in New York" -- and still she hasn't bought any pants for Suri.

"Kevin Federline launching line of children's clothing (second item)" -- well, maybe he'll sell some little-girl pants for Suri. We can hope.

"Lilo and SamRo ring in new year with public fist fight" -- no, ladies, it's called "First Night," not "Fist Fight!" Lesbians! What can you do with them?!

no one cares about courtney looking like an idiot... cant we just assume she looks like that every day and stop paying attention?

Posted by: quintiliusvarus | January 5, 2009 8:59 AM | Report abuse

Kudos to Lourdes for not being content to rely on the acting ability she inherited from mom.

Courtney Love looks like she was shot out of a cannon that was aimed at a cheap lingerie store.

LiLo moving to Dubai, where women's bare-knuckle boxing is still legal.

Katie Holmes spends $14 million in six months in New York and *still* hasn't found a lookalike good enough to fool Tom.

There are only two incredible things in the sentence "David Spade and Nicollete Sheridan spotted at dinner date" - (1) that David Spade can get a date, and (2) that Nicolette Sheridan eats.

Kevin Federline launching line of children's clothing (second item). Change "Kevin Federline" to "Gary Glitter" and THEN you've got a story.

Has anyone else seen (and been bothered by something in) the network promo for Barbara Walters' upcoming TV interview with Patrick Swayze and his wife Lisa? At the end we're treated (ha!) to the sight of The Swayze dipping Walters, rather than him dancing with his wife, which is as it should have been and would have been a genuinely affecting moment, since they met through dancing and it's been a constant in their long marriage. I think this brief snippet sums up what's so wrong with Baba Wawa: she or at least her producers seem to think she's a bigger celeb than anyone she interviews.

Katy Perry and Travis McCoy split? Alright, I've reached old age now because I really have no idea who these two are. It's a sad, sad day.

Amy Winehouse looks healthier than she has in years? Is it really that difficult to look like you are not on the verge of dying?

Oh, and it would have been nice to get a warning before scrolling down and seeing the topless pics of her.

K-Fed is only starting a children's clothing line because he needs a cheap way to clothe all the kids he spawns.

By the way, awesome BKD on Saturday.

ScarJo,
We have to work this out. First the restraining order, now the take-down notice. If only you could realize I'm the Woody to your Soon-Yi, except for the part of you being my common-law step-daughter. There has to be a better analogy. Let me work on it.

Condolences to John Travolta, Kelly Preston and family. As far as the supposed time gap goes, the kid was 16 and like any self respecting 16 yo probably doesn't get tucked in anymore . If it happened before going to bed, it reasons he could not have been discovered until morning.

Dorkus, what are talking about Sat BKD day? By the way, sorry about the website, dude.

Liz, AAACK, Did you realize there were topless photos of Amy Winehouse? Pass the double strength brain bleach please and I certainly hope the IT police don't say anything.

Not sure I would call Amy healthy looking. Her stomach protrudes like one of those poor African kids. The guy she is with does not look very sincere, either. Wonder how much he is being paid. --Sorry, a little surly this morning I know.

Lilo move to Dubai? Isn't that a country wear women cannot go unescorted by a man? (Sam doesn't count). How can she handle that?

Nevermind my question about the bkd day on Sat. I see the post now. Wow, didn't know that his son was "autistic" or whatever they call it. But still, from what i've learned since he was pretty high functioning and my original comment still could apply.

The morning mix has been so boring the last few weeks, but we're kicking it up now -- thanks especially to the LiLo and SamRo post. I can just close my eyes and see them going at it in an alley with a bum watching while eating a sandwhich. That's just priceless. (Not to mention the teaser line: "Courtney Love can't dress herself." Best of the year so far.)

So here's a warning to be careful what you wish for- I was hoping to hear some Clooney news, as the last I heard of him he was in Puerto Rico with a porno 'stache. And lo, news! In...the form of Paris Hilton. Say it ain't so, Liz; say it ain't so!

Yeah, Saturday was awesome here. all the scientology defenders were right out of the gate.

I was really waiting for Byoolin to make the incredibly obvious reference to a certain dead baby.

The Travoltas are now claiming that he was never left alone for 12 hours because he had a nurse (minder) 24/7. Still stand by my orginal statement that this, while a tragedy, might have been avoided if his parents belonged to a relgion that recognized proper medical treatment.

LiLo does know they hate lesbians in Dubai right? Plus, the whole public intoxication thing is not laughed off over there.

Will anything turn the Travolta's off the Scientology cult? What will it take? Did they not address their son's condition b/c they were encouraged to deny it by the cult?

I heard an interview with Kelly Preston once where she was emphatically anti-psychiatric meds for children, denying that meds would ever help any children and always would only hurt children. Why? I'm not pro-meds or anti-meds. I'm in favor of meds if appropriate. Did some doctor suggest medicating her son and did that make her so upset? So Scientology gave her false reasons to turn away from doctors?

It's all very sad.

Posted by: Amelia5 | January 5, 2009 11:21 AM | Report abuse

The Winehouse photos are NSFW not because she's topless, (ew) but because she's Winehouse.

Quote of the week from NYP Page Six "spy." "Lindsay was really unstable and flipping out." Wait, that's not news. Doubt Dubai welcomes unstable people who are flipping out, either.

Am willing to suport the Send Katie Holmes to Detroit movement. Maybe the Pres-elect could make her Ambassador or something.

td, Madge didn't need lessons to act like a ho. Hope things work out better for Lourdes.

Posted by: reddragon1 | January 5, 2009 11:24 AM | Report abuse

To Amelia, ep and other lawyers here (since there are reportedly so many):

Re Jett Travolta: At what point are parents legally culpable for refusing to get their child needed medical treatment for an illness or chronic condition (given $cientology's denial of the existence of autism, and utter contempt for appropriate use of psychiatric medications)?

I've read of cases of ultra-fundamentalist parents convicted for insisting on faith-healing and prayer-only approaches to such conditions as Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes in their children. These are typically the sort of parents whose minister leads through a cult-of-personality, and their churches are only about one step removed from the rattlesnake-handling mindset (if that).

I am aware that $cientology's army of lawyers have bullied their way into getting the scam legally declared a religion, but I keep hoping that this could someday be undone.

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | January 5, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

The chances of getting scientology not declared a religion are slim. Whle it is a mostly a tax designation, the concept of a belief system as a religion is rooted in the First Amendment. The US government does not want to get into an organization's "core" beliefs and deciding what is and is not a religion based on some standard determined by the government.

If the parents stated they were acting on their religious beliefs, it would be a hard case to prove negligence. yes, there are case, but those are tough ones. Again, because of the government's unwillingness to mess with religious beliefs. It is a balancing of the kid's needs with the parent's freedom of religion. If it can be proven that the kid might have had a seizure anyway, even if receiving treatment for autism (highly likely based on Saturday's comments), then there is no negligence on the part of the parents. Their inaction made no difference in the outcome.

The above is solely my opinion and should not be considered legal advice.

Since this is also the celeb-animal blog :-):

The first family leaving the White House this month will be without one of its longtime members: the Bush family's 18-year-old cat has died.

The first lady's office said Monday that India, a black American shorthair named for former Texas Rangers player Ruben Sierra, died Sunday at the White House.

Posted by: Californian11 | January 5, 2009 12:23 PM | Report abuse

OK, I know someone who knows someone who was one of the aides for Jett Travolta. This particular aide always referred to Jett's condition as "autism." So whatever the family may have said in public, for whatever reason, I believe they would have done everything they could have done for their son.

Scientologists may not "believe" in treating depression or hyperactivity, since those ailments are rather subjective. However, I doubt they'd refuse treatment for seizures.

To my knowledge, no medication completely eliminates seizures, and the side effects of those meds are such that you'd want the lowest effective dose. So it is quite possible that Jett had a seizure that whatever medication he had couldn't control.

In fact, according to Fox News, this looks like the most probable cause. The medication Jett had been on was ineffective and discontinued.

Hey, did anyone think to look for poor India after she disappeared going to the litterbox?

Ok, so sorry, uncalled for, Lindburgh baby and all.

In all seriousness, I know that ethically it is a real dilemma to treat patients who have such restrictive religious (or otherwise) beliefs and even more difficult when it is their children that may be harmed. In some cases, such as Jehovah's witness refusing transfusions for their child, providers have sought court orders. However, as ep said, this goes against 1st ammendment rights but when a child is involved it is a little gray. Does the child get a choice in the matter? Not usually. Unfortunately in Jett's case it probably wouldn't have mattered either way.
