Catching Up with 'Lost's' Michael Emerson

Michael Emerson. (ABC) It turns out that Michael Emerson, living, breathing actor, is every bit as intense as Ben Linus, fictional, diabolical mastermind. The difference, I suppose, is context. Where Ben Linus's frightening gravity is mustered to bend those around him to his will, Emerson's is more of a centeredness and workman-like approach to his craft. Yesterday, I spoke with Emerson by phone and it may behoove fans of "Lost" to pay close attention to a man who -- both in and out of character -- chooses his words carefully. Emerson, who says his default mode is theater work, never expected his run on the show to last this long (he's in his third season) or for his character to become so central to the plot. "I'm really sort of grateful I didn't know or I might've been so nervous I'd have screwed it all up," says Emerson. But...

'Lost' Dueling Analysis: 'The Little Prince'

In which Liz and Jen discover that dedication to this show involves screen grabs, magnifying glasses, Facebook searches and origami. Share your theories and questions this afternoon at 3 p.m. ET in the "Lost Hour discussion. Sun (Yunjin Kim) and her special delivery. (ABC) Liz: Last night's episode managed to pack as much impact into 40-some minutes as the season premiere did in almost two hours. Jumping right in, the headline is that Jin's alive. And that would have been enough. But there was so much more. A young Danielle Rousseau. Nosebleed contagion. The gathering of the off-islanders. Sawyer's peek at Aaron's birth. Wow. That's actually more than we got in all of season 2.5. Let's get cracking -- and we'd better hurry because I have a very special phone date today. Jen: You sure do. And the person you're planning to talk to, Liz? The only side he's...

Wednesday List: A Rap Name for Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix. (AP) Joaquin Phoenix says his budding rap career (captured on tape) is no hoax. Okay, good. Glad that's settled. Now we can all move on to the uneasy anticipation of his first release and the inevitable comparisons to Kevin Federline and scores ill-advised actors turned musicians (Eddie Murphy, Don Johnson, Scarlett Johansson). Phoenix may know a lot about acting, but he's already made a huge blunder when it comes to the music industry and we may be the only thing separating him from a botched entree onto the hip-hop charts. He hasn't yet re-dubbed himself with a catchy handle. Think Federline's snappy "K-Fed" or Sean Combs's "Puff Daddy" (or "P. Diddy." Or just "Diddy.") Today we'll rectify that by brainstorming an MC name for Phoenix. And it's a good thing; considering his image management lately (see photo above), he can use all the help we can give....

A New Psychic Friend: Vivica A. Fox

I'm feeling super-conflicted this morning. Last year, I was all into Vivica A. Fox's season-long cameo on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." It was the best possible way to mount a comeback (she was arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2007) -- do an edgy show known for fast-thinking improv and totally hold your own with Larry David and J.B. Smoove. But Vivica just couldn't keep a good thing going and, as you'll see below, she's now followed Dionne Warwick (and Gary Coleman) into the shame spiral that is shilling for the Psychic Friends Network (PFN). Take note, Vivica -- Warwick was the butt of many jokes for her association with PFN, but most especially when the now re-vivified company declared bankruptcy a decade ago: The big loser in the demise of Psychic Friends is, of course, chanteuse Dionne Warwick, who's been the key spokeswoman for the network for almost five years...

Comment Box: The Big Deal About Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson as Daisy Duke in 2005's 'The Dukes of Hazzard.' (AP) Last week much schadenfreude was had at the expense of Jessica Simpson when pictures of the one-time pop star turned reality show pouter turned country twanger sporting a visibly curvier figure and an unfortunate outfit hit the Internets. Predictably, a gaggle of photo agencies and celebrity-stalking bloggers were quick with quips like "Jessica Simpson: This Is How She Rolls" or "Jessica Simpson Fat as Hell." Sister Ashlee, Kim Kardashian and even Simpson ex Nick Lachey were quick to come to Simpson's defense. Ashlee scolded us for paying attention to Jess's weight at all: "Since when did a woman’s weight become newsworthy? A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman’s weight or figure."...
