Comment Box: Is Angelina to Blame for the Octomom?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie lead their children through Japan's Narita International Airport in January. (Getty Images) In the wake of the recent birth of IVF octuplets in Southern California, I wonder where you think the bright line should fall for deciding when celebrities' children are off-limits for snarking and when they're fair game? [Snip] And evidently Octomom was looking for an outpouring of publicity and support, and seems to be trying to channel (if not surpass) Angelina Jolie, and now even has a website seeking donations. So, where's the line on kids, Liz? -- Nosy Parker I'm pretty sure I'm on record about where the line is vis-a-vis celebrity kid stalking, but to recap: If Katie Holmes strolls calmly down a New York street with Suri, knowing she will be swarmed by photographers, then Suri is fair game. The celeb (in this case Holmes) knows what she is...

'Lost' Dueling Analyses: 'This Place Is Death'

Daniel (Jeremy Davies) and Charlotte (Rebecca Mader). (ABC) This week, Jen Chaney and Liz Kelly debate their way through the season's fifth episode and give a ringing endorsement to an hour that contained both the Frozen Donkey Wheel and the Smoke Monster. If only Taller Ghost Walt had shown up, it would have been a trifecta. Don't forget to join the "Lost" Hour discussion live at 3 p.m. ET. Jen: Liz, before we start delving into all the time travel and island mythology stuff -- and believe me, we will -- I thought we should begin by praising something a little more basic, and that made tonight's episode particularly enjoyable for me: The actors. We regularly sing the praises of Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn (as well we should), but I want to single out two ladies for what I thought were just shattering performances. First, Yunjin Kim, our...

Is it Madonna or Her Shtick That's Getting Old?

Madonna on stage in November 2008 in Philadelphia. (AP) Is Madonna getting too old for "sexpot"? As much as Madge observers like to talk about her amazing capacity to reinvent herself, it's wearing a little thin. And her latest attack in an ongoing insurgency against aging -- a 46-page spread in W magazine -- is derivative on many levels (Her own "Sex" book, "The Graduate," cheap porn). When W last checked in on Madonna, she was draped langorously over some nervous-looking horses (we even talked about it). This time, she's draped over 22-year-old Brazilian model Jesus Luz, with whom she has been romantically linked for the past few weeks. (What happened to A-Rod, you ask? Keep up: Madonna divorced Guy Ritchie, who had the gall to resist Kabbalah-ization, last fall. She then spent some time with steroid-laced Yankee Alex Rodriguez before trading him in for a younger model.) The...

Diane Keaton: Future Nobel Laureate?

Dear Nobel Literature Prize committee: I am writing you today to inform you of Diane Keaton's forthcoming book. Although I may find her personally detestable and comically affected, I am sure you will want to review her book for potential inclusion among your 2010 nominees. If you are not familiar with Ms. Keaton (I've included a snapshot at right) and her oeuvre, allow me to provide a brief summary: In the '70s, after a forgettable performance in "The Godfather," she wore baggy clothes and played her neurotic self in movies made by a man who eventually married his adopted daughter. From the '80s onward, she starred in a series of dippy chick flicks -- each one more vapid than the last. The most recent was "Because I Said So," in which she played Mandy Moore's mom. I wouldn't watch it, though. Not relevant. She did make a brief detour...

For Chris Brown, a Time to Get Help?

Chris Brown on stage at Madison Square Garden with girlfriend Rihanna in December 2008. (AP) Chris Brown was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of making a criminal threat (on an as-yet unidentified 19-year-old woman who may or may not be a big star herself). According to the Associated Press, possible domestic battery charges may follow. If true, one of the saddest parts of this story is Brown's own very recent history as a witness of domestic violence in his childhood home. In 2007 Brown acknowledged his own troubled past: "I don't want to mention the person's name - it wasn't my real father - but somebody hurt my mom and me, I had to deal with that from seven all the way to 13. It affected me, especially (my behavior) towards women -- I treat them differently. I don't want to put a woman through the same thing...
