Matthew McConaughey's Forgotten Film, 'Tiptoes,' Surfaces Online

By Liz Kelly

This weekend, as gaggles of fans of mediocrity pay for the privilege to see "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," Matthew McConaughey's latest addition into the rom-com genre, one of his more daring -- if misfired -- films languishes in rental purgatory.

Despite having the the special effects of "Benjamin Button," the sensitivity of "Love Story" and the cast of "Speed" (or a close facsimile), "Tiptoes" -- the story of a normal-sized man (McConaughey) whose relationship with the lovely Kate Beckinsale is nearly thrown off course when she finds out the rest of his family are dwarves (yes, dwarves) -- was quietly released straight to DVD in 2004. And, until this week, seemed to be largely forgotten.

But, thanks to the magic of the Internet, the trailer somehow caught fire and made the rounds this week:

In case you were wondering, yes, that is Gary Oldman, the classically trained actor whose resume includes a stunning portrayal of Ludwig van Beethoven and Lee Harvey Oswald, co-starring as McConaughey's vertically-challenged brother. Patricia Arquette -- of the we-are-attracted-to-bad-movies-like-moths-to-a-flame Arquettes -- also appears as some kind of comic foil.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable living in a world where "Tiptoes" -- an obvious instant classic -- goes straight to DVD while the barf-inducing "Girlfriends Past" gets wide release in multiplexes nation-wide. Luckily, though, it is rentable. And, shockingly, in a quick scan of reviews from Netflix viewers the concept itself (a realistic depiction of the issues dwarves face living in a normal-sized world) gets high marks, most reviewers say the film fell short on execution.

And, yes, I just fast-tracked this one to the top of my rental list.

Maybe McConaughey's fellow actors were just scrunching down in order to stand farther away from his un-deodoranted pits.

This looks like a spoof. I can already see the Wayans remaking this as "Dwarf Movie."

I wonder what Gary Coleman has to say about Tiptoes?

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Oh, mercy. That's a good one. I'm going to have to adjust my Netflix list.

How, in these overly-politically-correct days, did anyone think this was a good idea for a movie?

Serious question - doesn't this violate some agreement with the little people union about non-dwarves playing dwarves? I always figured that outside of LOTR (hobbits aren't dwarves), you have to hire actual little people to play little people.

It looks as if they couldn't decide whether to be market this as a comedy or a straight-up drama.... I see from the trailer (and IMDB confirms) that Peter Dinklage and Michael J. Anderson (from Twin Peaks) also appear. And speaking of the Wayans, David Alan Grier is also listed.

Oh heavens. "And in the role of a lifetime..."
I can't help but think that two minute trailer showed every important plot point and emotional high point in the movie. I look forward to Liz's review.

"Have you ever had a dream with a dwarf in it? Do you know anyone who's had a dream with a dwarf in it? No! I don't even have dreams with dwarves in them. The only place I've seen dwarves in dreams is in stupid movies like this! "Oh make it weird, put a dwarf in it!". Everyone will go "Woah, this must be a f***in' dream, there's a f***in' dwarf in it!". Well I'm sick of it! You can take this dream sequence and stick it up your a**!"

I thought all of Matthew McConaughey's films were forgotten.

Oh, Byoo, I love that film! Absolute classic!

I thought "dwarf" was considered a derogatory term by those most affected by it, kinda like "Redskin." Course the people in Dallas consider "Redskin" an offensive term for other reasons.

Dude. If it has Peter Dinklage, I'll watch!

Not even kidding.

I always thought "dwarf" was fine, but "midget" was bad?

=========
Dwarfism is an official term for the disorder. I believe the offensive term is "midget." Gary Coleman seems to confirm that sentiment.

Snort! Good one, Liz.

I was sure this was just a put-on (e.g, "Only your heart needs to be big" and "Proudly presents" and "Role of a lifetime"), and not a real film, but it is available for purchase on Amazon.com, and you can read there that it is "An unusual and heartfelt drama about prejudice and the bonds of family."

One of the dwarfs in this movie is hardcore porn actress "Bridget the Midget."

Let's not forget - prostitute and the Moonlight Bunny Ranch, too.

And pras40, that was what stood out for me, too. "And in the role of a lifetime..." Good Lord!
