The Most Overrated Entertainers? You Tell Me

Ryan Reynolds. (Getty Images) If you ask Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Reynolds is the next big thing, dubbing him "the Man Who Was Van Wilder But Has Since Proven He's Capable of So Much More." EW predicts imminent box office dominance for the 32-year-old Canadian who this week hits theaters in the Sandra Bullock rom-com "The Proposal." Not so, replies Christopher Rosen writing for the New York Observer, who says Reynolds is, if anything, overrated: Despite the matinee idol good looks and wonderfully quick comedic timing, Mr. Reynolds has never carried anything on his very formidable shoulders. And while that’s fine for a young actor, Mr. Reynolds has been knocking around for the better part of a decade. First, do you agree? Vote in the poll: poll by twiigs.com Second, who else do you consider overrated? Actors, musicians, celebutantes -- all fair game; basically anyone in the public eye who...

Ann Curry, Hard News Hold Out?

Suddenly NBC second-stringer Ann Curry -- she of the sycophantic Brangelina interviews -- has been cast in the role of a crusading hard newswoman who bravely defies the dumbing down of news by insisting on covering "credible" news like Iran and Darfur rather than give in and start following the Britney beat. Or so Curry, the New York Observer and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof would have us believe. Curry says she would never stoop to cover a story of, say, a topless Britney Spears caught shoplifting (a hypothetical) and blames average Americans for our insatiable appetite for tabloid journalism. From the Observer's coverage of a conference attended by Curry on how Twitter is affecting the news biz (linked above): "The reason I have to fight every time to do these stories is because the truth is that it's hard to get the majority of Americans or even a...

Heidi and Spencer's Guide to Fame

Famous people Heidi and Spencer Pratt. (AP) Heidi (nee Montag) and Spencer Pratt (aka Speidi, aka Heincer), the vapid, yet scarily demented "Hills" bimbos who recently turned "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" into their own personal PR machine have gone all magnanimous on us. Yesterday -- in what could mark the first instance of a "For Dummies" book written by dummies -- the ditzy duo announced plans to co-write a book on how to get famous. Said Heidi to Access Hollywood: "We co-wrote this book. It's going to be a life-changing book to civilization." To which Spencer replied: "Very good quote. Thank you Heidi." Though sure to become required reading for aspiring reality show dimwits, the rest of us will likely take a pass in favor of something less painful. Like a colonoscopy or an inner eyelid tattoo. Still, it might be worth prognosticating Speidi's likely...

Perfume aficionados take note: Four new celebrity fragrances will be hitting store shelves to compete with long-time celeb stink peddlars Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker. Below a quick run-down of the new scents. Reese Witherspoon poses with In Bloom. (Avon) Reese Witherspoon's "In Bloom" You loved her as June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line" and now you can smell like her, too. In November, Avon will launch In Bloom, a fragrance Witherspoon describes as "sensual" and "romantic" and "everything Abbie Cornish is not." (Okay. I added that last bit about Abbie Cornish) What does it smell like? "I was really drawn by white flowers to get that sense of a steamy night somewhere in the South," said Witherspoon. "Definitely gardenia is a big thing for me because my father -- every Mother's Day or on my birthday -- would buy small bouquets or corsages for my...

Jennifer Aniston an Unfair Target?

I rarely find myself disagreeing with your trenchant commentary, but was really bothered by the blog posting on the Pet Sitters Award this morning. It does not appear that [Jennifer] Aniston sought the award, nor does she appear to be trying to make a PR coup out of it. Yet, it was used as an opportunity to take potshots at her for not being Angelina Jolie (who despite the other polls cited is not everyone's idea of female perfection incarnate). -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live discussion If that's the impression you had after reading the piece, then I can only conclude I did a bad job of expressing myself. In the interest of full disclosure I'm on team Brangelina, but I didn't intend (in that instance) to take potshots at Aniston. What I was trying to get at is that Aniston's string of disappointments -- the Brad...
