Breaking: Michael Jackson Dead -- LA Times Report

By Liz Kelly

The Los Angeles Times is now reporting that Michael Jackson has died at 50. -- 6:28 p.m. ET

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Michael Jackson was rushed to the hospital -- and in a coma -- after paramedics found the 50-year-old pop star not breathing when summoned to his Los Angeles home this afternoon.

Jackson had been in the midst of training for a series of sold out London concerts scheduled to kick off on July 13.

We're tracking the story closely and will add the latest details as they become available.

There's the third celebedeath this week. Michael Jackson. HOLY COW.

He is finally at peace. Oh his poor children.

I'm getting chills after just reading Liz's chat from today when she said "things happen in 3's" and not an hour later. Michael Jackson is in the hospital. What a weird week. I hope he's ok. As weird as Jacko is..still too young.

Oh no! MJ too! RIP. So odd.

I was thinking the same thing, CapCurrent.

TMZ seems to have beat everyone to the punch with the first report of the ambulance and then that he was dead. According to them he was without a pulse and receiving cpr when the ambulance arrived and they never got it back.

Some thoughts...

- Last week, his agents announced that he was training with Lou Ferrigno to "bulk up" for the come back tour.

- Then there was the MRSA/Strep (who knows?) scare about a month ago.

There was so much secrecy involved around Michael's health that we may never truly find out what happened to him.

Then, there are the kids. I hope to God there's a will and that we don't see the sort of "jump ball" custody fight we saw with Dannilyn Smith.

Either way, it means more Nancy Grace, a special split Farrah/Michael tribute on Larry King, and the intriguing possibility of a live funeral that could rival that of James Brown's.

But that's down the road. Today, I'm just sad for the Jackson and Fawcett families and a little more reminded of my mortality than I usually am.

Does every paramedic in LA have TMZ on the speed dial?

Interesting that NBC broke the news before CNN. Usually, it's the other way around.

You know, mdreader, I think you must be right. TMZ does seem to get the ambulance chaser award on a consistent basis.

The first concert I attended was The Jackson 5. It was the 70's, at the Richmond Coliseum and the tickets were purple. I had never felt like I felt that night! Even now, it's difficult to describe, as is my many reactions to hearing that, at 50, Michael's body gave out.
There's been a lot said about Michael Jackson, both negative and positive, but know this: because of his Superstardom all over the world, the world will grieve his loss. This is going to be bigger than Elvis, and much more impactful. He was a genius, flawed and sick, perhaps, but committed and true to his artform.
The legacy this icon - also just a man of flesh and blood - leaves in the arts is monumental!

So very sad. Rest in peace, Michael.

perez Hilton had an interesting ifnot typical take on the breaking story...(since heavily edited)

“We knew something like this would happen!!
Michael Jackson was taken by ambulance from his Holmby Hills home to a nearby Los Angeles hospital on Thursday afternoon!!
Supposedly, the singer went into cardiac arrest and the paramedics had to administer CPR!!!
His mother is even on the way to visit him!!!
We are dubious!!
Jacko pulled a similar stunt when he was getting ready for his big HBO special in ‘95 when he “collapsed” at rehearsal!
He was dragging his heels on that just like his upcoming 50 date London residency at the 02 Arena, of which he already postponed the first few dates!!!
Either he’s lying or making himself sick, but we’re curious to see if he’s able to go on!!!
Get your money back, ticket holders!!!!”
