Friday List: Animated, Anthropomorphic Childhood Trauma

In retrospect, I suppose I'm lucky for counting three animated films as some of the most traumatic events of my childhood. Sure, I had my share of bumps, scrapes and time spent hiding out under the dining room table on particularly contentious days around the Kelly household, but when I reach into the vulnerable pain that perhaps only kids under the age of 10 are capable of feeling, it is the faces of anthropomorphic animals I see. Anthropomorphic animals in severe emotional pain. Based on a conversation that kicked off in yesterday's Celebritology Live discussion, today we'll lean on each other as we recall -- and maybe re-feel a bit -- the pop culture touchstones that bruised our little hearts as children. I'll start with the three that really got me but good, then ask you to share yours below. >> I was all of seven years old when my...

Serious Film Fandom at the Toronto Film Festival

Another dispatch -- with video! -- from Jen Chaney on the Toronto Film Festival. Look, I'm not going to lie: it was nice to meet some high-wattage celebs in Toronto. But just as fascinating to me: the fans who spent hours upon hours standing outside certain hotels, just hoping to catch a glimpse of someone whose name merits printing in bold type. Since I obviously know a little more about what it's like to live on the admiring-movie-stars side of things, I had a good time chatting with some of them, and watching them gleefully crowd around Juliette Lewis when she arrived at the Interncontinental Hotel on Sunday afternoon. Here's a little video -- complete with footage of Juliette, who handled the attention very graciously -- to give you a sense of the scene....

Good Reads: Celebrity Twitter Impostors

Did Danny DeVito really need to do this sans shirt? (Photo courtesy TwitPic) So it turns out some of the best celebrity Tweeters are impostors. As someone who spends a criminal amount of time poring over celeb Twitter feeds, I can tell you the lifestyles of the inane and famous all start blending together into one massive miasma of self-absorption. Which is why, when one comes across something that doesn't quite fit the mold, it stands out. For instance, I had high hopes when I stumbled across a feed purporting to be the brain droppings of Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld. But the white-haired, black-suited designer didn't exactly strike me as a Twitter kind of guy. Finding him on Twitter would be akin to discovering him eating in a mall food court. And, as suspected, the account turned out to be bogus. A sampling: Believe it or not, I love rap....

Hitting the Highlights of the Toronto Film Festival

George Clooney at a press conference for his new movie 'Up In The Air' on Saturday in Toronto. (AP) Jen Chaney has spent the past five days at the Toronto International Film Festival. Today she recaps the highlights of her experience. Covering the Toronto Film Festival has brought on a bit of an existential crisis. I've tried to be everywhere at once in this celeb-filled Canadian city, and perhaps, as a result, I've been nowhere. Or maybe I just think that because I've seen too many movies during the past few days that raise important questions about the human condition. I've met George Clooney, therefore I am: could that be the meaning of life? Honestly, I don't know. All I know is that I had a wonderful time covering one of the most significant film festivals in the world. While doing so, I tried my best to get a...

Patrick Swayze: A Timeline of Career Highs (and Lows)

A dancer turned actor whose burly, yet non-threatening, good looks landed him in everything from mini-series TV to indie films, Patrick Swayze -- who died Monday at 57 after battling pancreatic cancer since January 2008 -- defied categorization. It's true: His name is synonymous with box office cheese and we love to tease, yet somehow Swayze's earnestness and obvious dedication to his craft made him one of the most bankable stars of the 1980s and '90s. And, yes, he totally got it. Below, a look at the touchstones of Patrick Swayze's diverse career. 1983/"The Outsiders" -- Although Swayze had been knocking around in small parts for a few years, it was his casting by Francis Ford Coppola in this sweeping adaptation of S.E. Hinton's classic coming of age tale that first brought him to our attention. 1984/"Red Dawn" -- A year later, Swayze led the cast of this cold war...

Diablo Cody Talks Scary Movies

A Jen Chaney dispatch -- with video -- from the Toronto Film Festival. If anyone was planning to ask Diablo Cody to write the script for the upcoming remake of "Poltergeist," they shouldn't bother. As a hardcore horror fan, she knows all about the "Poltergeist" curse and says she wants nothing to do with an (allegedly) lethal franchise. "If they offered me $5 million, I still wouldn't do it," she told me during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Cody has been promoting her own shocker-comedy effort "Jennifer's Body." But "Poltergeist" was just one of the scary movies Cody and I discussed. I asked the "Juno" scribe to tell me about her five favorite horror flicks and her favorite female characters in that same genre. Want to know which films and characters she mentioned? Watch the following video, home skillet, and find out....

Separated at Birth: Kanye West and Joe Wilson?

Is Kanye West the Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) of the music world? Last night's ill-mannered interruption of Taylor Swift's VMA acceptance speech was eerily reminiscent of last week's similarly unwelcome outburst from Wilson during President Obama's health care address to a joint session of Congress. So what does that say about us? West hasn't let a VMA broadcast slip by for the past few years without somehow forcing a Kanye moment. And Sunday's full-scale invasion of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech had the ring of a premeditated -- and pathetic -- play for publicity (and ratings) on a network that has expanded its stable of jackasses to include Sasha Baron Cohen, whose Bruno character was crudely lowered onto Eminem's face to much fanfare in June. (An incident the network later admitted was staged.) While West's storming of the stage may not have been scripted so much as allowed to happen, the...
