Friday List: No Talent? No Problem!

Yesterday, as is wont to happen, a reader wrote in to the weekly Celebritology Live chat with a query that makes for an excellent Friday List: What celebrity has come the farthest with the least amount of talent? For my money, it's Jay Leno. He couldn't be less funny, more cheesy or further past his expiration date. He is the hackiest of hacks and when trying to somehow account for his success I can only presume a) There are more blue-haired old ladies watching late night TV than I'd realized or, b) Leno has made some kind of deal with, well, diabolical forces. I mean, the man's big idea was "Jaywalking": Please. Who tops your list of talentless success stories? Share your picks -- and your reasons -- below......

Catching Up with a Greener Mario Van Peebles

Mario Van Peebles. (Getty Images) You may know Mario Van Peebles from his turn as Malcolm X in "Ali" or perhaps from one of his many TV roles (he's been on everything from "All My Children" to "Law and Order" and, most recently, "Damages"). Or maybe you remember him as the star of 1985's "Rappin'" or the director of 1991's "New Jack City?" Courtesy of his mom and eco-conscious pals like Ed Begley Jr., Van Peebles is turning over a new, greener leaf. On Sunday his new show, "Mario's Green House," premieres at 6 p.m. ET on TV One. The show chronicles Van Peebles on his quest to reduce his family's (wife Chita and their five children) environmental impact. With President Obama's renewed focus on climate change, the show couldn't come at a better time. Last week, I talked to Van Peebles about the show and his approach to...

Enough Already with the Kanye Impressions

Jack White, the heretofore cool White Stripes frontman, erred over the weekend by being the latest in a long line of celebs to do an Interrupting Kanye West impression. Have a look: Here's the thing: Neither White nor Justin Timberlake, who tried the same thing on Tina Fey at Sunday's Emmys, seem to realize that the humor value of Interrupting Kanye lies not in hacky impressions, but in the clever mash-ups (like this and this and this) that flooded the Web less than 24 hours after the original VMA incident over a week ago. Time to move on. Taylor Swift is sick of it. Me, too. Let's all just agree to step away from the Kanye meme. True, it was one of the best memes of all time, but it's finished....

Brad Pitt's Flat-Footed Fashion Foible

Possessed, as I am, of unimpeachable fashion sense and nary a bad look captured by a paparazzo, I am confident that you will cede to my essential rightness when I pronounce Brad Pitt's monogrammed loafers an abomination: (Getty Images) While a man possessed of Pitt's good looks could probably wear stale hollowed-out baguettes as shoes without raising an eyebrow, the monogrammed shoe surpasses the absurd, the merely ugly, the regrettably trendy. These self-referential kicks veer into an ick-nast territory occupied by a motley crew of self-lovers and the insecure -- Martha Stewart, Liberace, Laverne De Fazio. Let this be a warning to all -- but particularly any men who may possibly live in my house -- that a monogrammed shoe, especially one bearing two-inch practically neon initials, are every bit as as egregious a fashion no-no as the dread pleated pant. And, at least the fashion-challenged can blame the presence...
