Enough Already with the Kanye Impressions

By Liz Kelly

Jack White, the heretofore cool White Stripes frontman, erred over the weekend by being the latest in a long line of celebs to do an Interrupting Kanye West impression. Have a look:

Here's the thing: Neither White nor Justin Timberlake, who tried the same thing on Tina Fey at Sunday's Emmys, seem to realize that the humor value of Interrupting Kanye lies not in hacky impressions, but in the clever mash-ups (like this and this and this) that flooded the Web less than 24 hours after the original VMA incident over a week ago.

Time to move on. Taylor Swift is sick of it. Me, too. Let's all just agree to step away from the Kanye meme. True, it was one of the best memes of all time, but it's finished.

yeah... now if they'd had kanye, off camera, eating a bag of cheetos during the musical guest - with a cut to him shaking his head, wearing an 'i <3 Beyonce' shirt... that would have worked (and might have helped - self depricating humor tends to be good in situations where you're a jackass)

then again - snl hasnt been anything except unbearably painful to watch for years. horatio sans reading a phonebook would be an improvement.

Thank you. I thought the same thing when I saw this in the Morning Mix.

but what do you expect when all Hollywood does is remakes. The idea of moving on and doing something new is such an alien concept they can't even move on with somethng like this.

"Let's all just agree to step away from the Kanye meme. True, it was one of the best memes of all time, but it's finished."

I reserve the right to pull Interrupting Kanye out whenever the situation warrants it.

Have to disagree with QV's assertions that "snl hasnt been anything except unbearably painful to watch for years. horatio sans reading a phonebook would be an improvement."

While SNL has had its share of unbearably painful moments, it's also had its funny ones - Tina Fey's SP impression and Justin Timberlake's guest appearances, to name two.

As for Horatio Sanz, having him read the phonebook "would be an improvement" only if it were compared to choking to death on one.

But the audience laughed. So maybe it's funnier to see a Kayne impression if it is live? I would find it funny during an office meeting.

Much like Mr. West himself, Interrupting Kanye is fun at first, but the novelty wears off pretty fast.

I say we not only need to dump Kanye West references, but also the use of the word 'meme', which no one understands (meaning me).

I agree with justmike. Teh meme meme has jumped the shark and deserves to be thrown under the bus. But, it is what it is, so we can just haz laffs fur now until it all goes away.

*****

But Kanye, self-promoter that he is, would surely say "meme first."
