Photo: Goldie Hawn, out to sea or out to lunch?

Goldie Hawn meditates with an unidentified companion. (AP)

Okay, so remember when Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell did that awful "Overboard" movie in the '80s? No? Well have a look, because it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the above picture move across the wires this morning. According to the caption, Hawn's meditating in a boat in Varanasi, India. What could be going through her mind? Perhaps she seeks absolution for her long career of cheesefests like "Overboard" and "Private Benjamin?" Or perhaps she hungers for the inner knowledge that will lead her to a better Botox practitioner? Or could she be seeking a way to tactfully recommend her daughter stop dating dudes who decorate their bedrooms with paintings of themselves as centaurs?

We may never know. But Goldie, namaste.

What is with the ginormous size of the bindi dot on her forhead? Or is it a sniper's lazer light?

Posted by: hodie | November 10, 2009 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Overboard is not an awful movie! It was funny and mildly entertating. Plus, KURT RUSSELL LOOKED SO HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goldie has spent a lot of time at various indian spiritual sites over the years. I even remember a goldie hawn story I heard from a nice kid in Dharamsala once... you just dont hear about her because, well, her spiritual thing is hers i suppose. I'm surprised by the tone of this one, Liz

Posted by: quintiliusvarus | November 10, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

Overboard is a funny movie!! I usually agree with you, but I have to take issue with this injustice. Private Benjamin isn't half bad either. I think Goldie Hawn is actually pretty funny in a lot of things and didn't she win an Oscar? Perhaps her legacy is being tarnished lately by her much less talented skankotron daughter.

Posted by: spret07 | November 10, 2009 11:11 AM | Report abuse

I have to disagree with you too, Liz. Overboard is one of those so bad it's good movies. That said, she does look like she did in the scenes where she still had amnesia.

Posted by: liet | November 10, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Okay -- really, who hasn't seen overboard? Isn't it on TNT just about every weekend? I can't hear a ship horn blowing without thinking, "Arturo!...Catarina!" Am I the only one?

Posted by: MrsKerin | November 10, 2009 11:36 AM | Report abuse

Rut roh -- do I sense an "Overboard" backlash... or "backsplash"?!

Posted by: Liz | November 10, 2009 11:40 AM | Report abuse

Meh, this doesn't doesn't get the reaction from me... I actually like Goldie Hawn, she's always struck me as a bit adventurous, so it's entirely believable that she's sincere, or simply respecting the culture she's visiting. I'd take that over Madonna visiting a Buddist temple in one of her bustier gettups...

Yeah overboard was a bit silly, but harmless bubbly romantic fun. I would suspect that after Laugh-in (in which she was absolutely perfect) she had trouble being taken seriously...

Posted by: LTL1 | November 10, 2009 11:45 AM | Report abuse

PS - I agree that I would more likely jump on the snark wagon for her daughter...

Posted by: LTL1 | November 10, 2009 11:47 AM | Report abuse

I'm just glad that you didn't include Captain Ron in your list Liz! Overboard is a great movie!

These two clearly influenced their lives, as they spend a good deal of time on the Island in the Bahamas where my folks live. Unlike Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, they actually get around and meet the locals. I agree with LTL1, Goldie doesn't seem to travel for a photo op or to be simply be pampered poolside.

Posted by: MzFitz | November 10, 2009 11:53 AM | Report abuse

I'm very surprised at the snarky and uninformed tone of this article. Goldie Hawn has always been involved with Hinduism (sans the photo-ops characteristic of other actors)- this is not a fad with her. As someone who has kept her private life ...well, private, she does not deserve this unwarranted disrespect.

Please continue to target the Lohans et al with your ever-so-superior vitriol - you are certainly qualified for that!

Posted by: MDey | November 10, 2009 12:09 PM | Report abuse

I like Overboard too. It's funny without being mindlessly stupid. Sometimes you gotta relax and just laugh. It also had important life lessons like Prostitutes do not perform their services in trucks.

Posted by: epjd | November 10, 2009 12:14 PM | Report abuse

Hodie, from my vantage point, the ginormous bindi dot looks more like a giant herpes lesion than a sniper's laser.

I would advise people not to go overboard in their reaction to Liz' post, but that would be too cheap of a pun.

You didn't mention her visits to her childhood home; I love this article about it:

Not a huge Goldie fan, but I think she's a very good actress. And chalk me up as an Overboard fan too. A fun, harmless movie with a nice story.

Toffutti, tofutti, tofutti, tofutti.

Oh jeez 'squatch. That was AWFUL.

(jelo secretly laughing tho')

Posted by: jelo97 | November 10, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

You have to cut her some slack. Doubt this was a publicity photo, she's out doing her own thing, probably snapped by some tourist.

Posted by: mlc2 | November 10, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see the real Goldie without all the hair covering her face, careful lighting and makeup. This Goldie looks just like the Goldie I saw in Walgreens a few years back, and I thought, good for her. She appears to be aging naturally.

As for this blog, we are all about snark! And we're equal opportunity offenders here. We can't just snark on some and not others. :-)

Posted by: Californian11 | November 10, 2009 1:26 PM | Report abuse

Liz may have set a record for largest number of groups offended in the fewest words: Goldie Hawn fans, Overboard fans (who knew there were so many?), and Hindus/Hindu converts.

As for the picture, if it's from AP, then it's not a tourist snapshot. It might have been taken by a stringer, who might or might not have disclosed his/her affiliation to Ms. Hawn and her people - but should have.

Posted by: northgs | November 10, 2009 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Oh agreed, snark is universal and neutral... I just was piping up with my non-reaction... Wasn't she in Bird on a Wire with Mel "I can expunge whatever I want including you" Gibson too?

Posted by: LTL1 | November 10, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

What is going through her mind?
"I could really use a nice juicy burger or steak about now."
or
"If I just concentrate, I can hold it in until we get back to the States." (a la Jerry Seinfeld)

Never much of a Goldie fan, because whenever I see photos of her she's always doing that weird huuuuuuuuuge smile where she stretches her mouth from side to side - never understood that. But, she's a long-time Eastern-thinking devotee, this isn't something new or just for publicity.

And BTW, Varanasi is INSANE, with the burning ghats, the countless people, the filthy river that everyone bathes in....

Posted by: jaybbub | November 10, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

I concur with quintiliusvarus and the others: why are you mocking the religion someone chooses to embrace? This is Hinduism, not Scientology, and this post really feels bigoted. (and I am an atheist)

Posted by: egengle | November 10, 2009 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Goldie never looked better, maybe because she has her mouth shut. Too bad Liz didn't do the same. Next Ash Wednesday, let's make fun of Catholics!

Posted by: sorcerers_cat | November 10, 2009 2:53 PM | Report abuse

FAIL, Liz.

The whole tone of this is sadly off, and not at all what I would expect from you. Goldie Hawn, while she's never made "fine cinema" or whatever, still made fun movies, and even if she IS responsible for Kate Hudson, you have to give the woman credit for aging more-or-less naturally and pretty much keeping her private life out of the media.

I don't usually comment, but I'm really disappointed by this.

Next Ash Wednesday, let's make fun of Catholics!

Posted by: kabuki3

--------------------------------------------
Why restrict us to Ash Wednesday? Snarking on Catholics should know no season. Well, okay, maybe priests should give up altar boys for Lent.

BTW, what do you win when you scratch off Goldie's bindi dot? A 7-11 franchise?

Posted by: sasquatchbigfoot | November 10, 2009 3:01 PM | Report abuse

I really liked her in First Wives Club (which Liz probably hates due to Keaton).

Posted by: sorcerers_cat | November 10, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Whoa - what an interesting string of posts. My fellow Celebritology followers have hearts! And they heart Goldie.
My reaction to the photo was much the same: for all the celebrity stupidity out there, this didn't seem like a good target.
But I still heart Liz!

Make fun of Buddhists next! They meditate too. So do a lot of Christians but they are like us. And where's the smear on mooslimz?

Posted by: ccates | November 10, 2009 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Liz, when did God die and make you master appraiser of the universe? You certainly do enjoy your "superior vitriol" don't you.
Goldie Hawn has accomplished more in her 60 some years than you ever will. The woman has something you apparently are not familiar with: class.
"Overboard" may have been just good clean fun...ya, silly. But at least not the sordid smut that is so coveted/enjoyed by today's movie goers.
And I applaud Goldie for aging naturally, and beautifully.

Hey, isn't that Emma Thompson in the boat next to Goldie?

If I ever get the chance to meet His Holiness, the 14th incarnation, I will address him thusly:

"Hello, Dalai! Are you related to Salvador?"

And I give Mohammed Bobblehaed dolls to all my Muslim friends. Peace be upon them!

Maybe Emma needs a little cleansing after supporting Polanski.

Overboard was hilarious!! There are lots and lots of 'stupid' comedies today that are much, much er... more stupid. Goldie Hawn was a comedian when there were few female comedians. And still aren't many...

Agreed Dorkus. Especially since the original was so hilarious.

Posted by: jelo97 | November 10, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

Ridiculing her religous beliefs seems mean and petty. It's not like she's promoting something using this photo. I think this post is inappropriate.

Neither should Steve Martin, though this offense was not so grievous as Father of the Bride, Parts I and II.

Apologies if my reference to these movies caused unintentional vomiting.

I love it when a BKD comes together.

Posted by: sasquatchbigfoot | November 10, 2009 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Since we're being so serious today, I'll add that Goldie Hawn is a Jewish Buddhist (not Hindu).
And where did everybody misplace their sense of humor today? Lighten up a bit.

Posted by: boomama | November 10, 2009 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Even in her 60's, I still think Goldie is gorgeous. Maybe I should start meditating...

Posted by: sarahabc | November 10, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Seriously folks, lighten up! I don't believe Liz was making fun of a religion but of a funny photo. Please get over your holier-than-thou selves and have a happy BKD day!

Posted by: hodie | November 10, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Sas, I think it's safe to say that anything Steve Martin did after Three Amigos he should be punished for. Especially after ruining the Pink Panther.

Posted by: DorkusMaximus1 | November 10, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Total BKD - seriously... when someone writes about "smut so coveted today", I gotta wonder what in the world brought them to our little island, we proudly traffic in smut daily here in Celebritology.

Lets not go overboard on Overboard, it wasn't oscar material and it wasn't THAT funny, it just wasn't that heinously bad either.

I am sure she couldn't give a rat's a** what we think, she's got Snake Plisskin by her side and that's not too shabby.

Posted by: LTL1 | November 10, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Besides we are totally missing out on the other funny half of this post, trying to find a way to recommend her daughter not date a man with a painting of himself as a centaur in his bedroom...

That's just gold.

Posted by: LTL1 | November 10, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

I too heart Goldie, and Overboard, and Private Benjamin. "I want to go to LUNCH!!" At least she lets herself be photographed without makeup. I hope I'm as beautiful at 60-something.

Posted by: mdreader01 | November 10, 2009 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Did Liz SEE Private Benjamin?
I'm guessing not. It's a movie about transformation. Private Benjamin became her own woman in many ways. It was at times serious and inspiring as well as funny. The parade of talent in that movie is pretty impressive too.

Goldie Hawn has been into Eastern religions for many years. Nothing new about this at all. Sorry, Liz seems to be uninformed all around.

Posted by: digtalcomp | November 10, 2009 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Hawn has a new movie (comedy) coming out about a woman who travels to Katmandu to scatter her husband's ashes. I'm guessing this photo is a still from the shoot.

The other woman looks an awful lot like Emma Thompson.

Posted by: sorcerers_cat | November 10, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Wow-couldn't be farther off. Overboard is darling and funny, and Private Benjamin very funny and in fact groundbreaking as far as showing an empowered woman who rejects just ending up with the man in the end, and also for Goldie taking control of her career and making her own movies. And she was nominated for an Oscar for it. I'm going to say Goldie has no apologies to make for that one.

Posted by: msame | November 10, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

it is an amazing photo.
anybody who saw 'private benjamin' in the 80s could not have pictured goldie hawn meditating someday at hinduism's holiest site.
but the beatles went to india in the 60s seeking spiritual enrichment. and produced songs like 'within you without you' and 'norwegian wood'.
hindus have come to america for decades, seeking nirvana.

Posted by: sd71 | November 11, 2009 2:39 AM | Report abuse

Private Benjamin was a good movie with a message that was still entertaining & funny..too few of them around anymore..

Kate Hudson's choice of men is no reflection on mom..she is an adult. But I do hope she sooner rather than later figures out that centaur boy should be sent to pasture..ick.
