Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split

By Liz Kelly

After two decades of togetherness and a reputation as one of the more stable relationships in Hollywood, a rep for Susan Sarandon this afternoon announced to that not only has she split with partner of 23 years Tim Robbins, but that they actually broke up months ago:

"Actress Susan Sarandon and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins have announced that they separated over the summer," her rep Teal Cannaday tells PEOPLE in a statement. "No further comments will be made."

What happened and why the announcement now just in time to ruin the holiday season? Doubtless, details will emerge over the coming days.

The couple has two children together, Jack, 20, and Miles, 17. They also raised Sarandon's daughter from a previous relationship, budding actress Eva Amurri.

The two, it should be noted, were chatted up by yours truly as recently as January '09 when they attended inaugural events together in D.C.

Sigh. Let's hope we can steer clear of announcements from Hollywood's other celebrated un-marrieds, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell -- at least until the new year.

Well, I guess it did take Tim Robbins 20 years to dig his way out. He better get busy living or get busy dying.

DorkusMaximus, you are a riot. Love it!

Eva Amurri isn't the daughter of Chris Sarandon.

Thanks for the catch greyK.

Robbins and Sarandon split? Probably that Trotsky vs. Leninist argument about the dialectic. Too bad.

I knew that SNL digital short "Motherlover" would have adverse effects.

Posted by: ajc4 | December 23, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Not that I would ever admit I cared about a Hollywood couple. . .I would opine that the best evidence of a good relationship is that it also ends well, if it ends. They seem to have ended theirs without public tantrums and they seem to have remained friendly. Not bad.

Posted by: drmary | December 23, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Holy Dorian Gray, Batman! From that picture, Tim Robbins appears to have aged 23 years, but Susan Sarandon didn't age a bit.

Having a creepy aging portrait in the attic is definitely grounds for not-divorce, after 23 years of not-married.

Posted by: trichobezoar | December 23, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Is nothing sacred??????

Are you talking about them living together, having children together, for TWENTY-THREE YEARS without being married?
That certainly wasn't sacred.

Posted by: ooyah32 | December 23, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

It was bound to happen. She's so effin old. You guys who think she hasn't aged need glasses.

Posted by: bendan2000 | December 23, 2009 6:48 PM | Report abuse

He can get someone much younger and firmer and probably has.

Old age is tough on older and odder women.

Could you please explain the front page leader?

"After 23 years.... met in 1988"

um, is it 2011 ?

Posted by: tru-indy | December 23, 2009 7:02 PM | Report abuse

he's always been below average looking,no wonder she dumped him

He's aging and turning into blah

The fact that Tim and Susan were together for 23 years hopefully will be one that they will carry with them with positive and memorable thoughts rather than nasty, angry ones. To have been associated intimately with either one of these people would likely have been a truly honorable and valuable, meaningful experience regardless. I hope that they were able to really love and care for each other for most of the time, such can't be diminished or disparaged regardless of what happens.

These people from my point of view were the scum of the earth! I could not care if they dropped off the planet. Name one thing they have genuinely contributed to the public good. These people have the morals of sloths and the IQ's of guinea pigs they were just complete idiots! Every time they opened their mouth with something other than lines written for them they showed their stupidity. Good bye and good riddance we can only hope!

Gee, guess the joy of seeing their left-wing Messiah inaugurated wasn't enough to sustain them. Typical liberals, didn't bother to get married, so don't need to bother to get divorced.

It was reported to Susan that Tim said he hopes we can finally win in Afghanistan and Obama was right in sending more troops. Susan walked out saying she could never forgive him. Tim replied that he always secretly voted Republican and Susan was speechless.

That's pretty sad and shallow.

I'm with ooyah32 on this one. "Is nothing sacred?" doesn't really fit this one since they never married. Nothing "sacred" to comment on here.

I want to know who the other woman is. He does look worse for the wear--men generally do (Mickey Rourke, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, the dude who's running for mayor of Sante Fe)--and yet there's always some young thing hankering for some of that...

Posted by: mclovin | December 23, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Eh, it's not that surprising. People change. Their priorities change. I think cheating sucks. Serial monogamy is the way to go. Far less pressure.

Posted by: chunche | December 23, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Tru-indy-don't bother trying to get the facts, or even, the ability to do simple math from Liz a la "Celebritology" fame-you see, both are a little bit beyond her ken.

As for this split-I think SS looks old as hell-has looked REALLY old for the past 10 years-it's to Tim's credit that he didn't split long ago-the children factor, of course.

Posted by: schmetterlingtoo | December 23, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

She should have stayed with Crash Davis.

Posted by: sdrappa | December 23, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

P.S. I think Tim looks GREAT in that Post picture-however, he looks like he's with his older sister, SS-and maybe, that's the way it is with them now, that they are like brother and sister, instead of lovers-too great an age difference, at this age. Now Kurt and Goldie are different-there isn't a 12 year gap between them-and Goldie looks a hell of a lot better than SS does.

Why would two miserable liberals ever want to live together? I can only imagine the amount of Prozac they went through in a week!!

Posted by: cschotta1 | December 23, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Time to delete "til death do you part" from marriage vows. I mean, who are we kidding?

Posted by: uncivil | December 23, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Off the top of my head there three women no man should ever go down on.

Susan Sarandon.

Hillary Clinton.

Michelle Obama.

Its well known that liberal women don't like to shave, or wash that thing.

As the GreaseMan use to say "its a yeast feast" down there.

They're both yucky....esp. her.

Posted by: dbunkr | December 23, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the vote of confidence, shmetterlingtoo.

As for the age difference, the official statement from Sarandon's publicist uses the figure 23 years so we're going with that. I would imagine that production of Bull Durham was probably underway prior to 1988 -- like most movies, they take a while to get from script to screen, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility that the two met two years earlier.

I'm still trying to run down a better accounting, tho.

Her huge breasts probably got scary when they started sagging down to her knees, so he wanted to trade up. Meh.

You're welcome, Liz-you never seem to get the simplest things right-sloppiness in a reporter, even a sort of "celebrity blogger" such as you, needs to be called out -it's extremely off-putting. And I dislike how you descend into your blog the minute someone says something the least bit unflattering about you-not professional-get over it.

Posted by: schmetterlingtoo | December 23, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Don't understand the math here: split after 23 years, but met on set of Bull Durham in 1988??

Posted by: nicksak | December 23, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Don't worry about SS, she' be fine-I'm sure she'll take up with some woman, a la Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City-and go on to bigger and better social activist causes that only Sarandon and her smug little crowd could give a damn about.

Left of center? They have two left hands each. I'm mocking them because of who they are. I could care less about their relationship.

I detest the celebrity mentialty that uses their fame as a bully pulpit to express their views either way.

He is a narcisstic oligarch. The elite class is loaded with this type of “citizen”. They are perfectly willing to legislate every detail of the little peoples lives while they seek sanctuary for their own against any intrusions. Bottom line...Tim Robbins is a jerk.

Both of them spite the 'common' folk who are creating value in this country day in and day out.

LOL. Gotta love the sanctimonious comments from the neaderthal crowd here. "Not sacred" because they never had their partnership stamped "valid" by some authority figure that hardly knows them. But hey, that's the social conservative fascist for you. Long on robotic restrictions but short on brains, what's new?

Twenty-three years. Wow. Longer than, what, 98% of marriages? Kudos to them for making it work that long. Most news on Hollywood couples is meaningless noise to me, but these two, they mattered. Best of luck to two very classy and talented people.

WoW! A Booby Kennedy Evening! And the boobs in the comments make Susan Sarandon's bazooms look small.

One minor accomplishment: schmetterlingtoo discovers how to type in lower case.

Props to Dorkus for excellent snark. I wonder if Tim Robbins is plans to join Morgan Freeman in his quest to "get busy livin'".....if you catch my drift......

Some would say such hostility towards powerful and, many would say, attractive women suggests a certain... frustration. Go out to the bars, try to meet a, em, nice conservative girl and see what it's like to be with a woman. I bet once you've tried it you'll be MUCH less angry at high profile, successful women. Really, they aren't a threat to you and they are not the reason you haven't gotten la... been intimate with a woman yet.
