Here come the People's Choice Awards

The People's Choice Awards -- aka the awards that mean nothing but allow entertainers from movies, TV and music to self-promote and get dressed up -- are set to air tonight at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

And before you decide to forego the star-studded extravaganza, only consider that you'll be missing out on some primo entertainment. F'rinstance, hostess with the mostest Queen Latifah, the chance to see if Vin Diesel edges out Shia LaBeouf as Favorite Action Star, whether "Animal Cops" will reign supreme as Favorite Animal Show and if Charlie Sheen will rise above some recent unpleasantness to take away the award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor. And lest we forget what the night is all about, there will also be an award for (I kid you not) Favorite DiGiorgno Pizza.

Have a look at the full list of nominees, tune in instead to PBS's "This Emotional Life," then check this space tomorrow for a gallery of who turned up (expect some "Twilight" muscle and a Pussycat doll or two) and what they wore.

The People's Choice Awards have nominees? I thought it was like elections in the Peoples Republics--already a foregone conclusion. They are I suppose Celebritology at it's Celebritologiest. People who are famous for being famous, and get an award for said famousity from persons of equally assailable pedigrees. Sounds like great grist for tomorrow. And please--no Joan Rivers! Torches and pitchforks if she shows up.
