In celebrities we trust?

By Liz Kelly

Which one of these men is trustworthy? Top: James Earl Jones, bottom: Tiger Woods. (AP)

Forbes this week released a list of the top 10 most trusted celebrities. Whatever that means. I mean, do I want these people to keep a secret or babysit? Or am I just trusting them to be consistently entertaining? The answer, it turns out, is a bit blander. The magazine surveyed 1,000 lucky Americans and asked them which celebs they would rate tops for "trustworthiness, awareness and appeal." Ask a boring question, get a boring answer, right? So it's no surprise that the list was populated by a completely predictable huddle of the exceedingly snoozeworthy:

1. James Earl Jones
2. Tom Hanks
3. Michael J. Fox
4. Mike Rowe
5. Morgan Freeman
6. Sally Field
7. Ron Howard
8. Will Smith
9. Bill Cosby
10. Denzel Washington

Kudos to Sally Field for apparently being the only trustworthy woman in Hollywood. Maybe it was the whole "Flying Nun" thing. Still, the list is about as appealing as Will Smith's last five movies (in case that's ambiguous, I mean it inspires acute indifference.)

Wouldn't it, then, be much more fun to compile a list of the 10 least trustworthy celebrities? Oh yes. That's where you come in. In the comments section below share your nominees for the celebrity or celebrities you consider the most irresponsible, untrustworthy, morally reprehensible and examples of humanity at its nadir. Then, based on a highly scientific alchemy involving your nominees and my expertise, we'll debut our top 10 list in this space tomorrow.

Oh yeah, Lindsay Lohan is a good one to add to the list.

Was the original survey muliple choice or fill in the blank? Because if the latter, it actually is interesting that 5 of the top ten are African American men. Also, who is Mike Rowe?

As for Liz's question, all of them really. No. 1, Roman Polanski and then all of the sheep that signed a petition on his behalf.

I think Sally Fields is on the list because she's hawking fancy osteoporosis pills.

And somewhere, Valerie Bertinelli is crying and running off to eat ice cream.

Do we trust Morgan Freeman with our daughters?

Posted by: hodie2 | January 26, 2010 12:10 PM | Report abuse

You mean "do we trust Morgan Freeman with our granddaughters?"

Posted by: IrishFox | January 26, 2010 12:22 PM | Report abuse

Morgan Freeman would have been top on the trustable list just after James Earl Jones, until he out-Woody'd Woody. People seem to be overlooking this quite a bit...
My take on why we are so easily willing to believe Brangelina broke up is the same reason for us coming up with a 'least trustable' list: we get bored, we are easily bored, we don't like to be bored, and it's one of the things we do to entertain ourselves.

Posted by: agog1 | January 26, 2010 12:34 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure how far I'd trust Morgan Freeman (with a teenage female).

Least trustworthy, no order:
Amy Winehouse
Randy Quaid and his wife
R. Kelly
Charlie Sheen
Alex Trebek, especially when shilling dubious life insurance products
Any erstwhile celebrity who has been reduced to shilling anything on late-night television (I'm looking at you, Erik Estrada!)
Dog the Bounty Hunter (and family)
Roman Polanski
Jeremy Piven

R Kelly
Roman Polanski
Spencer Pratt and family
Tom Cruise
Jon Gosselin
Kate Gosselin

I know there's more but my brain can't take any more! Soap please!

Posted by: JenEFur | January 26, 2010 12:52 PM | Report abuse

Some of these are easy simply because of their behavior...
R Kelly
LiLo (sorry Luv)
Tiger Woods
Charlie Sheen
Ms Spears

but i think you gotta give a shoutout to some celebritology faves...

Ethan Hawke? hell yes...
Jeremy Piven? probably...
Courtney Love? - the posterchild of untrustworth and morally reprehensible

Lane Kiffin made me laugh - but it's fair
though 'every politician i can name' is probably close to fair too...

Ya'll have pretty much hit the least trustworty, but on the trustworthy list, where in the heck is Betty White or Jamie Lee Curtis?!?

Posted by: VaLGaL | January 26, 2010 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey, for all their alt-med, anti-vaccination poison woo.

Posted by: Ri_poste | January 26, 2010 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Hah!

Mel Gibson, Amy Winehouse, Lindsey Lohan, Tiger Woods, Charlie Sheen, Paris Hilton, Andy Dick, Paula Abdul, Tila Tequila, & Jon of Jon and Kate

But that's the problem. There are WAY too many you do NOT trust, that's why they do the "who do you trust" ones. A lot smaller group. I tend to be more interested in what celebrities who stay out of the rags think. And what about Meryl Streep? Just because she doesn't hawk anything she's not on the list? The good list?

Posted by: Stormy1 | January 26, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

What, no Simon Cowell?

Posted by: marybindc | January 26, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Donald Trump (but not his hair. It seems very stable and reliable)
Tom Cruise
All things Hogan
All things Lohan
All things Kardashian
Tila Tequila
Gosselins, separate and together
Anyone who puts being a scientologist before being a human.
Any celebrity who shills for insurance, medicare supplements, diets or diet pills (yeah, that's YOU Marie Osmond, Wilford Brimley, Robert Wagner, Willie Mays..)

I think Roman Polanski and Mel Gibson are such nasty pieces of humanity that they should just be removed from contention.

I agree with almost all previous posts, so I tried to create a non-overlapping list:

10. Angelina Jolie
9. Woody Harrelson
8. Jay Leno
7. Celine Dion
6. Mischa Barton
5. Sarah Silverman
4. Katherine Heigl
3. Rosie O'Donnell
2. Tom Brady
1. Naomi Campbell

3. Charlie Sheen
4. Tom Cruise

8. Nick Nolte
9. Gary Busey
10. Gerard Depardieu
