Friday list, valentine edition: Eight teen-movie couples to cherish

It's valentine season. Not that you could possibly forget, what with your local cineplex dominated by "Dear John" and "Valentine's Day," the rom-com with the Google-optimized title and the cast list that won't quit. So in honor of Feb. 14, that special winter day reserved for mediocre chick flicks, cavity-causing candy hearts and cards that say "I choo- choo- choose you," I bring you this very special Friday list. Today's topic: Teen movie couples we hope stay together forever. In some cinematic stories about first love, the couple's fate is pretty much sealed. (See every version of "Romeo and Juliet," or, say, "A Walk to Remember.") In other cases, even when there's a happy ending, you pretty much know the besotted protagonists don't have much of a long-term future. (See, much as it pains me to say it, Andie and Blaine from "Pretty in Pink.") But then there are the...

The Curious Case of Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is a beautiful woman. If you don't believe me, read a sampling of the comments from the YouTube clip of her 2010 Golden Globe interview session. "Meryl dress looks STUNNING!! And she looks nowhere near 60. BRAVA Mrs. Streep." "Hello Goddess....we love u" "When I saw Meryl Streep, I thought of her talent, grace and humility. That's why I forgot to see how beautiful she is!!!!!!!!" "She is such a beautiful woman, both inside and out." "Intelligence, grace, and beauty: She is a great American, cultural icon!" "I can't believe she's freaking 60. She looks gorgeous!" People love them some Meryl Streep. After a hot streak of hit movies ("The Devil Wears Prada," "Mama Mia," "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated") it's hard to find an article, blog post or interview that doesn't mention how beautiful or sexy she is. This will usually be followed by some comment...

'Lost' Dueling Analysis: 'What Kate Does'

Welcome back to another gripping analysis, in which Jen and Liz attempt to get to the bottom of this week's episode -- possibly without success. That's where you come in. After reading, add your thoughts to the comments section below, then join the 2 p.m. "Lost" Hour live chat. And, as always, don't forget to buzz by "Lost" Central. Together again: Ethan (William Mapother), Claire (Emilie de Ravin) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly). (ABC) Liz: Another week, another hour closer to the... very... end. What did we learn? That course correction -- at least as it applies to "Lost's" version of fate -- is alive and well? That Sawyer is still pretty P.O'd about the whole Juliet thing? That Kate is still torn between him and Jack? That Jack, speaking of the guy, is willing to swallow a mysterious poison pill to assuage his guilty conscience? And did we like...

For Oscars, time to sing a new song

Two of this year's nominees in Oscar's best original song category: T. Bone Burnett (left) and Ryan Bingham, already Golden Globe winner for "The Weary Kind" from "Crazy Heart." (AP) Here's a challenge for your Tuesday: look at the list of this year's Academy Award nominees for best original song. Now try to hum one of them. Can't do it, can you? Don't worry, you're not alone. Most avid filmgoers and award-season scorekeepers couldn't sing "Loin de Paname" from "Paris 36" if their very "vies" depended on it. In what has become an annual phenomenon, we're once again looking at a slate of Oscar-nominated songs that, while recognizing some fine work, pays tribute to music that most people with a working radio or iPod have never heard. Clark Collis wrote a nice, long story on this very subject in Entertainment Weekly's current Oscar issue, which, for reasons that defy...

Can anyone quarterback a good movie?

In the last two Super Bowls, we've been treated to four virtuoso performances by quarterbacks as the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger outdueled the Cardinals' Kurt Warner in 2009 and last night, the Saints' Drew Brees prevailed over the Colts' Peyton Manning. For years, the adage in the NFL has been that to win, you need a franchise quarterback. The same should be said for football movies. Let's take a look back as some recent gridiron films and their signal-callers and see who passed muster. The Replacements (2000) QB: Keanu Reeves (Shane Falco) The notion that these scab players were filling in for striking professionals was not lost on Reeves, whose on-field performance is rivaled only by his Southern accent in "The Devil's Advocate." And while the southpaw did have more zip on the ball than I thought he would, he's no Steve Young. Small ball: Head coach Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino)...
