Lindsay Lohan comes clean about drug use

Sorry, Barbara Walters. Important one-time child star turned Hollywood poison Lindsay Lohan has come clean about her past substance abuse problems in U.K. tabloid The Sun.

It's been a busy year for Lohan -- a split from girlfriend Samantha Ronson, a universally panned debut as an Ungaro fashion consultant and a steady stream of Twitter musings. Still, she found time to open up about her never-quite-confirmed affinity for recreational drugs in one of Britain's trashier tabloids.

And, surprise, she's blaming dad Michael Lohan, for talking to the press about her starting in 2007:

"When my father was going public, that's when I hit rock bottom. I abused substances too much and it wasn't the answer to my problems. People need to know that."

Except, estranged papa Lohan says, Lilo was already at rock bottom when he began courting press coverage.

"SHE DID NOT GO ROCK BOTTOM WHEN I WENT PUBLIC," wrote pere Lohan in a statement released in response to the Sun article. Instead, he says, Lilo's substance abuse took root when he split from wife Dina.

And, although Papa Lohan has no contact with Lilo, he claims she's still abusing prescription drugs.

It's easy to forget that Lohan is only 23 since she -- like other troubled starlets before her -- she got an early start in Hollywood and, well, each party girl year equals at least 5 normal years (Gallery: Lilo, a metamorphosis). Lohan's Disney-enabled entree into the entertainment field soon evolved into a promising start on a bona fide film career with acclaim for her work in "Mean Girls" (2004) and "A Prairie Home Companion" (2006).

Lohan is surprisingly candid in the interview. Here she describes what led her to her first stint in rehab:

"I went to rehab three times. The first time I checked myself in because I had taken Ambien. It's a sleeping aid but it makes you hallucinate. I'd run a bath and fallen asleep on the floor and the bath had overflowed. When I woke up I was so scared, I called my therapist and said, 'Can I just go somewhere for a month? I'm around bad people and I need to take care of myself'. I was terrified, so I put myself in."

Aside from a near constant presence on Twitter, Lohan is still working. She'll next be seen on screen in Robert Rodriguez's "Machete" -- a spin-off of 2007's "Grindhouse" double feature. She also recently completed work on a documentary about the illegal trafficking of women and children in India. And, of course, she'll always have spray tan empire Sevin Nyne as a fallback position.

And, is she 100 percent clean and sober now? Not so much:

"I'm allowed to drink now but I know my limits."

Lohan says, though, she's learned her boundaries and has "cleaned house" to rid her life of "self destructive" people.

More choice quotes from Lohan's Sun interview:

"I tried to mask my problems with alcohol, cocaine and mind-altering substances. Now I'm in a place where I don't need to use anything and I can feel emotions because I choose to."

According to Page Six, Lohan recently demanded cartons of cigarettes and a doctor on call to administer B-12 injections while hosting an Atlantic City hotel party.

"Mind-altering substances are so dangerous. If I can teach others, especially teens, by sharing my experiences, then that's what I will continue to do."

In October, Lohan defended 15-year-old sister Ali's right to party, saying "She's tougher than I am. She has a good head on her shoulders. Maybe it was different for me because I didn't know what to expect and it just happened really fast. I didn't have a big sister."

"I was only aware of cocaine because of my dad. I was terrified of it. But I tried it because I was stubborn, stupid, and wanted to see what it was like."

Lohan was busted twice with cocaine in her possession, in May and July 2007.
