Tiger Woods Apology: Will Tiger join the shame hall of fame?

By Liz Kelly

And so the Tiger hype machine rolls on...

The Post's Paul Farhi this afternoon writes about what we should expect from Woods at Friday's press conference:

[Woods's tight control of the event] means a few million TV viewers will likely see only what Woods and his managers want them to see: a contrite superstar, surrounded by friends and supporters, vowing to live up to his former image as a family man.
Will it be enough to restore Woods's pre-tabloid image?

And, to put things in proper historical context, Farhi also ticks off a shame hall of fame with this video review of high-profile celebrity apologies -- from David Letterman's apology for sleeping with a staffer to Jimmy Swaggart's "I have sinned against you, my lord" to Bill Clinton's "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

In case you missed it, read the transcripts of today's earlier chat with PR expert Dan Leinweber and my weekly chat, which was utterly Tiger-centric.

And remember to return to Celebritology Friday morning at 10:45 when Farhi and I will be live-blogging the Woods press event.

I want to see Tiger scowl, look into the camera, wave his finger and say, " I..did...not...have...sex...with...those...women...."

then watch Bill Clinton slap Tiger on the back and say, "Good job!"

Poor Eldrick (aka Tiger) Woods. He always looks like either he's going to burst into tears or hurl. Maybe he'll do one of those things if/when he makes a public fake apology.

Posted by: checkered1 | February 18, 2010 6:40 PM | Report abuse

He is spineless scum. A man would answer questions from reporters. But no...he will hide behind a wall of attorneys and advisers.

I am guessing that his face has healed after three months thus this appearance on television.

There's been too much bashing of Tiger Woods. He may have had a squeaky clean image but he was not a grand hypocrite. When Christian supremacist, family-values preaching, 'moral' crusaders become serial cheaters and clients of prostitutes, that's a juicy scandal. Preaching abstience by day (including the idiotic abstinence-only 'education' programs), then being a secret animal by night.

Highlights (all worse than Tiger): Sen. David 'Diaperman' Vitter (R) - VIP at the late DC Madam's brothel, including his indulgences in diapers; Sen. Larry Craig (R) - sex with anonymous men in public restrooms; Pastor Ted Haggard (major Bush backer) - meth snorting and sex with gay male prostitute; Ensign, Sanford, Giuliani, Gingrich, Bono, Chenoweth, Livingston, Barr.....

I hope in my lifetime to see the end of this country's juvenile obsession with this sort of thing. It's nobody's business outside of the family and the third wheel. We're the laughingstock of the world with this issue.

@ sasquatchbigfoot :

Yeah, and I'd like to see George W Bush scowl and look into the camera, wave his finger and say, "I... did... not... lead... us... into... Iraq... for... the... wrong... reasons..."

then maybe Henry Kissinger will slap Bush on the back and say, "Good job!"

All the SOBs get of Tiger Woods back. The just became what this society and the greed creed system lured him into. All the gold diggers most these US white Hussies enticed him and eventually he just got hooked. He is not the only one.
A little foolish may be and all that image building wealth and acquring the habits of the people he hung around, adapting to the usual status quo.

Knowing something of Scandinavian women, he marriage is most likely over. But that is between Tiger Woods and his Wife Erin. I for one do not wish them any malice, unhappiness etc. This SOB media needs to get off their back and let them move on.

Someone from the democrat party needs to explain this member of their party.

Durham police arrested Duke lacrosse accuser Crystal Gale Mangum, 33, late Wednesday after she allegedly assaulted her boyfriend and set some clothes on fire in the bathtub.
Authorities charged her with five counts of arson, simple assault, identity theft, communicating threats, damage to property, resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer and three counts of child endangerment.

I am tired of you tabloid acting flakes who hold professional athletes to hire moral standards then you hold public figures sworn to serve the public and payed by our tax dollars. Tiger woods owes us nothing. He made his money fame and whatever comes with it playing golf. If we would just treat these guys for what they are, entertainment for us we would not be so angry at people we only know for their athletic accomplishments. Tiger did not make any promises or take any oaths to serve the public. If you are buying nike clubs, gillette razors or drinking gatorade because you saw him on a comercial then the problem is not tiger its us. Seems we give public figures a pass and hold athletes to the fire. Reporters walked around for a year knowing that John Edwards was a cheater and did not even want to report it. And like Mike Golic said, we dont want apologies from tiger we want details. We want to know what he did, who he did, and how he did them. But we dont tell that much about ourselves so why do we think tiger owes us his private details of his life? Because he is good at golf and famous for it? Give me a break. I dont need an apology from tiger. Thats his mariage, thats his business. Anyone who thinks its their business please tell us about all the times you have screwed up. We will be glad to here it. As for the people calling him names, even with this scandal you fools would trade your life for his in a heartbeat.

You guys were angry at michael vic too. Now you dont even think about him. Remember when we all though he should never play football again unless he apologizes, does this and does that. Remember when we said any team that hires him will have a PR nightmare on their hands and PETA will be at their doorstep and we were never going to watch another NFL game if he came back? Remember all that foolish ranting and morality we had towards him? Now we dont even care, he is playing again and we have moved on to the next person to stone to death, its tiger. The truth is we have the attention span of a dog and right not tiger is the fresh bone with meat and grissle on it. Hey folks, remember Mark McGuire and how he was going to have such a hard time coming back to baseball? Are we thinking about him right now? He gave his press conference and moved on while we are obsessing over tiger.

Is that how you judge everyone, on what political party they vote for? Why dont you just go back to race or sex, it makes more sense. Democrat is not a race, sex or religion and maybe your party defines you but not everyone is like you. Get a life. When you go to church do you ask the person you sit next to what party they vote for before you worship? Your an idiot.

My bet sense we are going tabloid is Erin probably had a thing with the golfer she was a nanny for and he introduced her to tiger just to get her a bigger prize and get her out of his business. Eventually we will hear about her dirt too. Right now Tiger is the tabloid darling. Remember when we all thought Jose Canseco was lying scum? Remember when he said a year before it became public that A-rod would be envolved in a steroids scandal. We need to pay more attention to us and let the athletes be athletes and entertain us. We take them more seriously than we take ourselves.

No, no no. Not Henry Kissinger.

Dick Wad Cheney.

If the evil Dick Wad can't make the photo op, then we can try for Doug Feith, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, or Donald Rumsfeld

Did George Steinbrenner ever apologize?

Posted by: sthomas1957 | February 19, 2010 6:41 AM | Report abuse

So what.

Anyway, it's really a very personal matter. Though, being in the public eye...role model and all that stuff...does expose one to the public. Otherwise, he'd be just a horny cad who messed up his life and those of his children and wife. And I gather that's nothing special...just poor behavior.

He's guilty of being horny, famous, wealthy and having access to beautiful women.

If he was single none of this would have raised an eyebrow.
But he ain't.

It is sorta interesting that when someone like Sarah Palin says there are morals, and real rights and wrongs, she is mocked. But for some reason it is okay for WAPO to put a list together of people implying that there is poor behavior. Seems to me if Palin isn't right, then Bill and Tricky Dick were just doing neutral actions- actions that none of us get to judge because judging is a meaningless word anchored to a moral world that doesn't exist. Monica, bombing Cambodia, just things you are too jealous to admit you wanted to do yourself.

It's interesting that the "Hall of Shame" appearance always occurs under the stoney, perhaps smirking, glare of the media. Not exactly a shameless bunch themselves . . .

"Ye who is without sin . . . "

Posted by: kenhyde | February 19, 2010 7:37 AM | Report abuse

What is the big surprise? Just do a quick check of other professional athletes who could not adjust to some sort of balance between endless money and good sense and you will find prodigious list of what Puritanical/hypocritical Americans consider reprehensible behavior. "He who is without sin...."

Posted by: hhsmithinva | February 19, 2010 7:42 AM | Report abuse

America was "settled" by European "puritans" seeking religious freedom who wished to impose their views on others.
Australia was "settled" by prisoners.
As the Aussie's are wont to say, "Thank goodness we got the prisoners"!

Who care about this anyway? What do people really expect or want him to say that isn't blatantly obvious? I'm sure he's sorry. I sure he feels terrible about it. But why does he need to say these things publicly? He plays golf for pete's sake. The only people he needs to discuss this matter with are his immediate family. They are the one's hurt by this and they are the ones for whom he needs to make a mends.

What a g-damn punk who can't face the music in front of any and all reporters. Gotta choreograph his g-damn coming out with invitees and no questions from the audience. A real he-man that Woods boy. Man up boy and face all questions from any g-damn reporter. But no, you gotta be your ole punky, arrogant self. Hell with you.

Who gives a flying fig if this no talent idiot apologizes or not? He chases a little white ball around on some grass and then knocks into a hole with a stick. My two year old grandson can do that.

I suppose golf can be a relaxing game but if you are going to make a big deal out of something how about a scultpure, or a well written novel, or a painting, or someone who can sing beautifully?

You're making a big deal out of some no-account putz who can hit a ball with a stick?

That's just wrong!

Old golfers never die.
They just loose their balls.

Young ones just sink them
in a variety of white holes.
(if they're black !!!)

Who cares what he does or who he does. He's a golfer. That issue is between him and his wife. It's the media that has built him up and has also taken him down. Who cares - just let him play golf.

Now one of his alleged mistresses has come out to say that she saw the golf pro having a three-way with other men. Loredana Jolie Ferriolo has been shopping a tell-all story, asking for $1 million to reveal how Woods “came out, his healthy appetite for arranged sex, threesomes, girls next door, and an answer to all the rumors about his sexuality.” (celebrity-gossip.net)

I hope Tiger looks into the camera and tell all of you to go straight to hell. Then come back and whip major butt on the tour. Lets see how all of the fake haters and sponsors really kiss up to him. Some of you just can't stand it when a Tiger or Williams Sister take over and dominate a sport.

Go Tiger! You're a great golfer--the best. Most of us rightly envy your sexual life and would love the opportunity to make the same apology. I can only guess that what's fueling the presumed "outrage" are all those sportswriters coming home to their wives, who ask: "Honey ... you DID write an article expressing shock at Tiger, DIDN'T you?" That and their audience of 12-year-olds.

Posted by: Christopher-CTD | February 19, 2010 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Bill Clinton didn't lie when he said "I did not have sex with that woman!" He came from Hope, Arkansas, where they believe "sex with a woman" is intercourse, and anything else is just a substitute for "sex". So, he truly believed he did NOT have SEX with that woman (Lewinsky) and did nothing wrong!

Not that I am defending him, because it was disgusting what he did, but I have heard from other sources that this is the way he thought!
